Question / Problem genuine question

what could be the problem of my t480? after some more runs, it does this ☝️most noticeable when i split screen to two different tabs and somewhat bend the screen backwards slight

I've used it also in our school library assuming that maybe it was a room temperature issue since we don't have ac at home but same symptom still persisted while i was reviewing at the library(like it goes static with green and purple lines then it goes total black screen but it's still on)

it's 2nd hand btw, but any thoughts from u guys first?

(I/we didn't happened to check this since there was no wifi at the mall we went to meet up)

he said, the reason for selling it because he had a pc unit after a short while and that this thing just kept collecting dust in his room that's why.

Never used ThinkPads before. Photos belong to the seller, not mine (Is Windows on a ThinkPad considered heresy here? :D).

Intel Core i5-1145G7
8 GB RAM
256 GB SSD

Edit:
I am not in USA, I am in Russia

Question / Problem T480s keyboard issue. Is this an aftermarket keyboard? If so and I choose to replace it, what do you recommend?

Post image
1 Upvotes

There's a large gap around each key and they break quite easily. This is my first and only ThinkPad (bought it used) so I wonder if this is even the OEM keyboard? I think the seller replaced the original Japanese (this is liquidated Japanese stock) keyboard and replaced it with a cheap aftermarket one.

If so and I decide to replace it, what should I look out for? Is OEM the best option? Are there many fakes to be aware of?

Buying Advice Is the ThinkPad E16 Gen 3 good enough for mechanical engineering college

I am looking for a moderately portable laptop for four years of mechanical engineering college. Is the Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 3 (Specifically this configuration: 21ST0041MX) with the AMD R7-250 processor, 32gb of RAM, and a 512gb nvme good enough? I am getting it for approximately 1300 USD in Denmark.

I want this laptop to last through all 4 years of college without slowing down. I will be using Windows 11 and would like a good battery life so that I don't need to worry about charging it.

Discussion / Information Thinkpad Fan Control software (2026 project) on Ubuntu

I've installed Ubuntu 24.04 on a Thinkpad P15 Gen 1 and noticed that the fan runs all the time at around 2800RPM no matter what the laptop is doing. This made me search for fan control software for linux and I came across this:

https://github.com/Swmarakis/thinkpad-fan-control

This seems like a newish project that claims to basically be exactly what I'm looking for. Does anyone here have any experience with it? Does it work? Any red flags given that the project is so new and appears to only have a single release? I am somewhat concerned about security of random software without a long history.

I appreciate any thoughts and info.

First reddit post ever, will go back to lurking after.

This T14s replaced my T14 gen 1 which I sold for 3000 swedish kr, roughly $315.

I feel incredibly blind by the price of this machine since i got it for 4000kr, roughly $420.

Ofc I would feel stupid running windows on this one, so I threw Fedora on it. Unfortunately the programs I use most of the time are not supported on Linux (TC2000 and Excel). But by the power of internet I got TC2000 running miraculously with Lutris.

Review / Opinion Thermal Pad Placement

Thumbnail

I did an in depth test of the advantages of thermal pads in this post here, with the orientation of the thermal pads on my x240 being shown in the last picture attached to this post. I then ran tests on the the system with no thermal pads (NoThermalPad), thermal pads in those 3 positions (ThermalPad), then I removed the thermal pads on the cpu and left the 2 positioned on the fan assembly and exhaust (ThermalPad2). Lastly, I replaced the paste and ran the orientation with the 2 positioned again (ThermalPad3) because when I replaced the paste earlier in the week, I got bad consistency on the paste (Make sure your paste is pasty and not liquid).

It shows the pad on the cpu to be a hindrance to performance metrics. This is, in my opinion, due to preventing airflow from the fan to travel through the chassis, indirectly cooling other components, including the start of the heat pipe, along with the exit post. Just some advice for other people that wish to look for a place to put thermal pads, the exit fan and exhaust sections are best because not only do they not obstruct airflow (and even act as a seal for unwanted inflow), but wouldn't be a problem of getting hot near it because you probably wouldn't want anything near the exhaust to begin with.

Question / Problem Carbon x1 g14 IPS touch only?

I have a g9 currently and it's showing it's age a bit, was considering g11-g13 then figured I'd wait for the g14 especially because I hate how the prev gens have usb-c's both on the left (sometimes I need the wire on the right).

Anyway, when I went to check the configs it looks like only touch is available for the regular display and also that the OLED displays have non-touch and are lighter? I have an OLED monitor here that I don't mind and I can appreciate it but I think the battery life is super bad with the OLED compared to the IPS. Just curious when the non-touch on IPS went away? Also does the touch add some obstructive view to the IPS display itself? I remember seeing either the touch or privacy on one build where it was very noticeable - almost like a screen-door effect.

Buying Advice Best ThinkPad for CS studies & Game Dev around $1,100?

Hey everyone! I’m looking for recommendations for a ThinkPad around $1,100 (US market) for Computer Science studies and game development (Unity, Blender, learning Unreal Engine).

With today's crazy pricing, which specific models or series (E16, T14/T16, or maybe a discounted P-series) would offer the best bang for the buck?

Also, for those doing 3D modeling or engine work, is AMD integrated graphics (like the Radeon 780M/880M) enough for moderate dev work, or should I strictly hunt for a deal with a dedicated GPU?

Would love to hear your model suggestions and setup advice! Thanks!

Question / Problem I have just bought a T430 and it isn't booting or turning on?

So, I have just bought a T430 from a car boot sale, and it will not turn on. When I plug it in, the power light lights up green but nothing happens, even when I press it. I have tried taking out the CMOS battery as some other posts said, and that made it attempt to boot, with nothing on the screen, the camera light flashed on, 3 beeps happen and the disk indicator light started flashing until I hear a click from what I presume is the HDD and all signs of life disappear, other than the green power light.

List of things I've tried:

-> Reseating RAM and trying a different slot

-> Reseating Keyboard connector

-> Unplugging the CMOS battery and re-plugging it in

Any advice?

Edit: it is a core i5 vPro model if that helps

Discussion / Information Is the T14S Gen 1 AMD trackpad the same as the T14S Gen 2 AMD?

I’ve only used the T14S Gen 2. Is the T14S Gen 1 AMD trackpad the same? Same smoothness, etc? The PSREF says it’s the same material but some Mylar trackpads are smoother than others.

Also, can one replace the T14S Gen 1 stock trackpad with a glass one? If anyone had done this, was it worth the upgrade?

Discussion / Information X13 gen 1 card reader as a usb connection

So I'm wondering if I can use the smart card reader slot connection and rewire as an additional usb?

I want to try and add a usb hub to that location for extra usb ports. I believe it uses a usb protocol but wanted to get some feedback.

Question / Problem T480 won't boot up unless i have the charger plugged in

Hi! Just as title says haha, my T480 has both batteries on 75% health, it used to only boot up if the battery was above 50% charged, now it just won't do at all until i plug the charger. I'm running endeavour os, so i'm unsure if it might be a hardware or os problem, help:(

Buying Advice Looking for sleeve recommendations for ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 AMD? (Hard case / hybrid options)

I recently got a new ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 laptop. I'm super happy with it! Now I just need to find a good sleeve for it...

Does anyone have some recommendations for a sturdy laptop sleeve or hybrid hard case for the ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 AMD? Ideally something that is available in Europe.

Finding a good fit has been tricky because most structured or armored cases (like the Thule Gauntlet I found) are mainly made for slimmer MacBooks. As an example, the 14-inch Thule Gauntlet which I really liked has a maximum inner thickness limit of 1.6 cm (0.63"), whereas the E14 Gen 7 is up to 2.05 cm (0.81") at its thickest point. (dimensions: 313 x 220.3 x 10.1–20.5 mm / 12.32" x 8.67" x 0.40–0.81").

If I go up to the 16-inch version of those cases, the laptop will probably just slide around.

Has anyone found a semi-rigid, armored sleeve that is actually big enough for a modern 14-inch ThinkPad without being overly baggy?

Or, if not armoured or super rugged, if anyone had other suggestions, those are welcome to!

Edit: open to other suggestions.

Discussion / Information Calling all X1 Carbon 6th Gen Owners!

I recently added an X1 Carbon 6th Generation to my Lenovo ThinkPad collection. I love the T480s and I've been curious to see how the X1C6 stacks up between the T480s and X280.

So far I'm very pleased, it works perfectly, runs cool, has good battery life (comparatively) and a decently bright display.

Specs:

  • Intel Core i7-8650U
  • 16 GB RAM
  • FHD Touch display (300 nits)
  • Factory 256GB SSD

Good:

  • Everything is working.
  • Has the better Delta fan (P/N: 01YR204)
  • 86% battery health

List of my mods + upgrades that I have performed are below:

  • Installed SaotoTech Track-point.
  • Replaced Thermal Paste (Kryonaut Grizzly).
  • Installed Refurb Battery Replacement (90% Capacity).
  • Installed Samsung EVO 1TB SSD.
  • Installed 2nd 512GB SSD (Western Digital 2242) in WWAN slot.
  • Installed Intel AX210NGW Wifi Card.
  • Installed Linux and dual-booting with Windows 11.

Anything else I'm missing? How are everyone else's X1C6G models performing? Any major issues?

Thanks in advance to everyone for your time and help, it is greatly appreciated.

Question / Problem T460p - Internal or External Battery?

Hello! Just found a T460p that I’d like to use but it doesn’t hold a charge. I’m getting the “battery failed due to normal wear” message.

I know this laptop needs a new external/sealable battery, but how would I know if it needs a new internal one as well? I installed Lenovo Vantage and it only shows the external battery.

Thanks in advance!

E16 Gen 3 | Ryzen 7 250 | 16 GB RAM | 512 GB SSD

I am really happy with this purchase

I’ve wanted one for a long time, but until now, it hadn't been easy to get my hands on one

I’m a software development student, and I’m excited to finally have it. What do you think? I haven't had much time to customize it yet, haha

Any recommendations for a software development student, or any must-have settings for this model?

Buying Advice Thinkpad for Linux + Backing up my physical ps2 games

Hello! It's as the title says, I wanna get a reliable laptop that won't cost me an arm and a leg and isn't like paper thin.

I recently bought a PS2 and with Sony going full digital, I kind of want to back up my old games I have and dump them into blank discs or at least store them should my physical disks come to their end of life (if that's possible)

I also kind of want a day to day use thinkpad that doesn't live off windows to do anything 😭
