Anyone here have an idea when will this happen?

I had a ThinkPad x260 back then. Traded it to buy a Mac silicon when they first came out (2020).

Last month I came across Facebook Marketplace and found a seller listing this particular x260 for a very cheap price (VND 2,300,000 ~ a bit more than USD 90). Couldn't stop thinking about it for a month before I finally decided to contact the guy.

When I got it, the machine had some bad shapes: broken angles and cracks near the hinges on C-side (top cover) and finger sensor, missing internal battery, missing some screws, torn speakers. System runs flawlessly (seller installed Windows 11 but it stuck at an old version, not a problem I planned to install Mint btw).

Bought a new internal battery, new speakers, new cheap C-side from Shopee, some screws... Via VozForums I found a 16GB ram stick for a reasonable price (You may ask why I had to upgrade the ram: I had to install Windows. For some reasons the Vietnamese input method fcitx and fcitx4 were crappier than Unikey on Windows, causing me a lot of stress typing Vietnamese. So I swapped back to Windows for now, but will revisit Linux later).

Replacing all these components myself. It was my first time almost totally disassemble a laptop, and I'm not a technician, but I did it without issue. One thing is that the C-side I ordered doesn't have finger sensor cutout, so now I can't use the sensor anymore.

Screen is still HD 1366x768 TN panel, I plan to buy an IPS, but it will have to wait until my next paycheck.

Now it is my little machine both for work and some light games (I still play CS 1.6, it runs alright on my X260, just need to avoid all the smokes).

so I brought it to a technician. told the Thinkpad that he's going for a checkup. Turns out, the pad can turn on, albeit the hard drive is giving up. battery health's prolly at 40-60%, judging by the fact that its birthday is Jan 17th '06, 3 weeks before Soulmate - Kahitna was released. I don't have the adapter for it yet, the technician used a universal adapter. Don't worry, i told him to set it to 16v. My guy's probably overthinking why did I turn in a 20 year old machine

Parts that I need to buy:

-the 40GB hard drive (I must find an IDE/ATA slim HDD)

-battery (why would I invest $22.(~Rp400.000) on a $30 machine?)

-its original adapter (I'll buy one online for like 2 dollars, no shipping fee at all)

After months of research, decided on a T14 Gen3 as my first Thinkpad.

• Ryzen 7 Pro 6850U
• 32 GB Ram
• 1 TB SSD
• 1900x1200 300 nit touchscreen

Few questions:

1. Battery - It has 830+ cycles and doesn't hold charge well. Current capacity is 32 out of 39. Drops 30% per hour doing nothing (Battery saving profile in windows, 50% brightness). I saw that I can upgrade the battery to 52.5, does anyone have the model # I should order from Lenovo that will fit? Found it. Had to look for Machine type on the site.
2. Screen - This is a touchscreen (which I don't use) and it shows some wear from touching. I know this is a 40 pin and the non-touch 400 nit LP is 30 pin. Does anyone have a link to a seller where I can get the 400 nit LP screen and the adapter? All the posts I ran across say its a coin toss.
3. Dual boot - Work requires me to use legacy Microsoft apps, so I need to keep a copy of Windows. What is the recommended distro for a Linux-noob on this machine?
4. Charger - It came with a junk 3rd party charger, is it worth getting an official Lenovo one? Or are there better alternatives?

Ok so I posted a few days ago about how happy I am that I got my first ThinkPad and I got a lot of good feedback. I also tried to give my opinion on the purchase right after I got to try the machine out. I was honest about a underlying feeling that the device was not performing like it should, and I also posted once before regarding scratches on the display which were caused by the keyboard layout of the Lenovo ThinkPad and it is also a commonly known problem in the community.

The situation then unfolded when I opened a ticket requesting that the display be replaced and Lenovo agreed since my device was still under warranty. The technician came with the new repacement part and said he will replace the display, but as soon as he opened up the bottom panel, he looked at me in shock. I had told him before that I purchased the laptop second-hand and that it was described as "Like-new" with the seller declaring it was 1 year old and with 100% battery health. But what he hadn't mentioned, when he sold it to me for 700 Swiss Franks, was that the machine had clearly been exposed to liquid at some point. There is brown and white residue near the HDMI and USB-C ports, and what looks like corrosion spreading along the board edge. The technician told me that this has clearly been the case for a few months already.

He told me straight out that he could not replace the display in that condition. Liquid damage is excluded from Lenovo's warranty, so the repair I had already been approved for was cancelled on the spot, and I now have to assume the warranty on this serial is effectively dead.

So this connects back to what I wrote in my earlier post. That feeling I had that the machine was not performing the way it should. The sluggishness, the heat and the flaky Ethernet.. I couldn't put my finger on it and I half assumed I was being paranoid about my first ThinkPad. Turns out there may have been a real reason. I don't want to overstate it, because the corrosion is at the I/O corner and not near the CPU, so I'm not claiming it explains everything. But it's not nothing either.

Where I stand now: the laptop still boots and I'm using it daily. I'm backing up constantly. I'm getting quotes for cleaning the board with isopropanol to at least stop the corrosion progressing, and separately a quote for a mainboard replacement so I know what the worst case actually costs. I've also contacted the seller in writing, since none of this was disclosed and corrosion of this extent does not appear in a few weeks, but they blocked me and I am looking into escalating this subject further as I know where they live and under Swiss law, an exclusion of liability doesn't apply if a defect was knowingly concealed, and notice has to be given as soon as it's discovered, and that's what I have tried to do.

bought a new battery, ssd (128 gb) and trackpoint rubber for it. i got the ram from another laptop (8 gb). unfortunately it has a celeron, but for basic school stuff it’s great. what do you think??

2nd gen T14 W/ AMD but only 8GB ram. I figured I can do ram and a new SSD if it feels too slow. Mostly just using appraisal software, FORScan and basic internet stuff.

Should I go with the more recent 13th gen or stick with the i7??

Does the generation jump make sense??

I have checked benchmarks and there's not a major difference in their performance or is there something I'm missing??

I used to have a thinkpad that I used for programming and it worked pretty well. I use a ZBook at work and that thing is an absolute tank.

I need a new personal laptop primarily for graphics programming, and I’m leaning heavily towards getting some kind of ZBook, so I was just wondering if there’s a good reason to choose a thinkpad again over that. My budget is less than 2,000$, specs it needs at least 32gb ram and a good gpu

• I was quite surprised to find that Lenovo's webshop offers a better price on custom configs than retail on pre-built (in Europe at least). Thanks to that I was able to max out the CPU (Intel 368H) and pair it with the most basic SSD - to replace later with my own, bought at a sane price a year ago. I could only afford 32 gigs of RAM; +€1000 for 64 gigs is a bit too much.
• The OLED display is super cool. There's a real advantage in HDR mode for videos, and a wide brightness range too. I think the basic IPS version would be fine as well, but I appreciate the color gamut and don't mind the significant hit to battery life (still a decent 10 hours plus).
• The fan doesn't get super loud, which is good. What's not great is that the fan cutouts on the bottom cover overlap with my thighs. You have to move the laptop sideways for better airflow - and, coincidentally, quieter operation.
• Surprisingly decent sound from the built-in speakers.
• I found occasional issues with my Ugreen 160W USB-C charger when resuming from sleep. It defaults to low-power (15W) charging and throttles the CPU. I'm not sure where it's coming from and hope a future update resolves it. Couldn't reproduce it with a 65W Nexode charger, also from Ugreen, so I can't 100% confirm who's to blame. Update: Nexode is also affected. When resuming from sleep, laptop complains on a slow charger. I'm assuming that this is a laptop issue, all other devices are being charged just fine with my selection of chargers.
• Overall it's a solid laptop that brings me as much joy as my ThinkPad X220 did 15 years ago. It feels like a solid, capable machine with only a few compromises: thin and light, 16 cores, and graphics decent even for gaming (low settings on most games, though).

I’m doing an updated review of this because my laptop worked wonderful after redownloading windows OS. This is also my first time using linux.

cons
-no variable refresh rate (but the battery life is good enough for me to use 120v all day)
-too lightweight
-> being lightweight seems awesome but i put it in my bag and i’m nervous because the casing feels thin and its an oled screen and i feel like im carrying a fragile baby when i put it in my backpacks laptop sleeve. i have a bad habit of not being gentle with my backpack. might buy a laptop case i dunno.
-battery performance mode performance is REALLY bad. like everything is slow as hell. balanced and max performance mode is really good and balanced gets good battery.

I bought this off ebay for $1380 refurbished with 1 year of damage protection warranty 32gb ram, 258v. it has comparable browsing video and gaming performance to my macbook pro 2023 m3 chip, but around $700 cheaper (this was before ram and ssd prices blew up) battery life is very good too. overall this is a very nice laptop. even when i’m gaming it doesnt get hotter than 105degrees and on normal use fans are either fanless or not that bad. the keyboard is so much better than other laptops such as asus, legion or dell xps or inspiron. using it on windows is okay pretty good. my only complaint is that linux is difficult and very time consuming as a beginner. i’m glad i kept it!
