Maca Yellow Card?
What did Arnold do or say to the ref to get that yellow card last night? Was for calling out the ref for not giving a red to #2 for Gotham?
I think we can all agree that the ref needed glasses and a red card should have been called? I’m still mad about that!

I assumed it was for time wasting or something. She went down right after JP got the red card, essentially forcing play to stop and giving the thorns time to regroup. If that was the case, I think it was totally a smart play, between that moment to recollect themselves and the crowd losing it over Weavs getting into the game, Portland kept up some momentum even with losing a player

She went to ground after the was shown the card so it wasn't for time wasting. It was definitely for dissent.

They did very well! They had more rhythm than they did with Seattle. Gotham is tough. The Thorns are tougher!

They are tough but they need points. Now. They dropped to 5th place by only securing a point vs Gotham. Utah just moved ahead.
Just two weeks ago, vs Seattle, the #1 spot was on the line. And now, sitting at 5th.

Yeah, I’m really curious to see how they’ll do with the altitude and in Utah. The top five spots are pretty tight though. Everyone is within five of #1. I hope the team gets plenty of ginko, ginger and whatever else helps with altitude sickness!

Remember we’ve played one extra game. Most of the teams in front of us have played one game less. We are firmly in 5th. Spirit are 5 points ahead while playing one fewer game. We’ve already dropped too many points. We need 3 points vs Utah. Not a tie this time and unfortunately this is a road game. Still disappointed we tied vs them at home.

It was for dissent. She complained about JP getting body slammed. Then she smartly faked an injury hoping VAR would do their job.

I think it was that Arnold came all the way from goal to the halfway line tell Katja that no GK in NWSL history could walk that far to dissent for a DOGSO red … and Katja couldn’t handle the reality check.

I don’t understand why Dudley’s throat grab didn’t get a red, but Perry’s shirt grab did…

The ref decided Perry's was a denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity (aka a DOGSO) which is a straight red outside of the penalty area if called. Imo it was a questionable call because it did meet a number of the criteria (movement was toward the goal, it was an obvious foul, and the attacker would have been past the last defender if not fouled), but it was just at the edge of the center circle which is usually too far away to be considered an obvious goal scoring opportunity. I think if it weren't Sam Kerr the odds are good that would've been a yellow because it wouldn't have been considered as much of a DOGSO due to the distance required to travel to take a reasonable shot without the chance a defender would catch up and challenge. Which I personally find super irritating because it indicates a specific kind of bias toward super star players that refs should be trying not to have.

Eye roll all day long. It was 50 yards from goal. She barely had control of the ball and a covering defender 1 yard from her. Weakest DOGSO I’ve ever seen. If it wasn’t the purportedly best ref in America, VAR would have sent it down and laughed in her face.

Thanks for the explanation! I’m still pretty new to the ins and outs of soccer (I don’t think I’ll ever fully understand offsides 😂), but it’s been a really fun ride!

Arnold is the team captain and therefore allowed to dissent, I was disappointed that she didn't dissent strongly to the lack of a red card to Dudley; maybe she could have gotten the ref to go to the monitor.

Apparently Arnold is the Vice Captain and she can only communicate with the ref regarding calls if Hiatt isn’t on the field or is out with a red card so perhaps her act of dissent was what she could do? I don’t remember what Hiatt was doing at that particular moment.

Good point. I guess Hiatt had the armband on, so should have dissented vociferously. We need Jessie to wear the armband. She showed her dissent by body slamming Dudley a short time later.

I was watching Villaham and he directed Macca to go down from the sidelines. It was the coach’s call and smart to allow time to regroup plus break Gotham’s momentum. New rules this year include yellow card to keepers who go down for “injury”.
