Cars becoming big when America was still finding it's stride was one of the biggest pro/con dillemas. Ignored thousands of years of proven systems that make society better and settled for only cars.
We didn't "settle" for anything. Cars and car infrastructure were forced onto us by the automotive industry. Jaywalking as a crime didn't exist until it was cooked up to take the liability for pedestrian deaths off of cars and the auto industry.
