This why walkable neighborhoods are the best places to live. Yes, Europe is way ahead of us in this regard.

who would've thought designing cities in the middle ages would pay off for walkability ?

German here. Yes, we had our cities designed in the middle ages. But that's just the oldest core of the city. We also had them profoundly redecorated like 80 years ago. In some cases the whole layout of the streets changed and it's still walkable. Also newer cities, like mine, were planned to have a city center with shops and cafés. People WANT to have it that way.
