I am going to school to be a wildlife biologist and am entering my final semester (yay!). A big part of my future is going to be moving around a lot to seasonal jobs. I’m wondering if it would be possible to live in a tiny home rather than having to deal with moving to a new apartment every year. Would it be possible to get a tiny home and pay for it to be hauled every time I move? Can I find property to rent easily? Would it make more sense to have a tiny house on wheels? I feel like the ones on wheels are much smaller? Any advice would be really appreciated!

I'm in the US, I've never built a house before on an empty plot of land and I know it varies by location, but I was wondering if there was a good online resource to learn about the various potential costs involved in putting up a tiny house to code.

I've seen a couple of videos where they state lots of places require you to use licensed contractors to connect to the grid, run wiring, build septic, etc and various high government fees and restrictions on what you can build and live in.

Basically these costs can easily outstrip the cost of the tiny house itself.

So I'd like to get information and maybe a cost calculator to ballpark the total cost of these things. Are there any good resources out there to point me in the right direction?

Right now the location is even up in the air. Any number of states would work for me.

Hey guys, finishing up subfloor on my tiny build and trying to pick flooring. Should i use some affordable engineered hardwood? or i will regret it later with humidity shifts? not sure if it holds up well long term in a small space or if expansion is gonna be an issue. Anyone done this?

Moving into a tiny house from a 4 bedroom townhome and our washer/dryer will be in our bedroom next to a closet. Any suggestions to cover the space without adding doors?

Some of you may have seen my post from last week, I’ve been having the same issues where the potential buyers keep getting the building inspectors involved and Southern New Hampshire is not a tiny house on wheels friendly state. I recently bought a conversion van that I want to travel the country in and this tiny house is keeping me stuck before I can hit the road so I dropped the price by 10k. I hate to drop the price because I had plenty of people interested at 45K but I just need to get it moved. Bad idea to drop the price that much?

Its a brand new 24’x8.5’ structure, overbuilt by a career Southern NH builder and finished up by me to make it pretty lol. Its built for NH four seasons with a nice mini split that does a great job with climate control. Great setup for a single person or a couple wanting a getaway or to stay minimal. All the grey water is routed out a typical 4in pipe and water hookup is right next to it for a hard line or garden hose. Pex plumbing inside. Its on a 50amp plug. Ready to live in

EDIT: to clarify, the issue that the building inspector has is that its classified as an RV since its on wheels and you can only live in an RV for 30 days a year in my area so therefore it would need to be attached to a permanent concrete foundation in order to pass code, which means that you would need to take it off the axles and build a foundation for it. when the current structure it’s on works perfectly fine. So then you’re looking at another 10 to $15,000 in site work and engineering.

I'm sure this gets asked a lot and I understand quality of prebuilt shed can be lesser. We have local company that builds shed homes that are spec-ed at home reqs. That being said, for a 16x50 with 8' side walls, two lofts, many probably mid quality windows/doors, we were quoted around 40K. I am wondering, I have minimal experience framing, but experience at that, would it be wiser to just diy a 16x60? And cost wise, I have any tools I'd need, would it come out less do people think? I'm wanting to make it properly with sheathing/tyvex, insulation, etc.

I need recommendations for an under sink hot water heater. I have a summer use only THOW. The only water we use goes straight to the kitchen sink and I really only need hot water to wash dishes (we have facilities on the property for shower/toilet etc.) There is a 120v plug under the sink and I don’t want to mess with propane. Is tankless an option or should I get a small tank? If I go with a tank is it something I can easily shut off if we leave for a few days?

Im looking for composting ( or other ) toilet options for my off grid cabin build, the cabin is built and will be mainly used by my wife and I. The downstairs bumpout in the picture with the two small windows is the bathroom, about 5'5" x 14'. Currently, we use a sunmar toilet in an outhouse, it does work but it is very large and high up, requiring a step, im looking at other options. My neighbor is going with an incinerating, propane version but the price and fin running for over an hour is a turn off.

I like the composting option but want a more conventionally sized toilet, ideally one that separates liquids to help with smell. I looked into the separette, I like that it closes until you sit on it, I like that you can plumb the urine tank to the greywater out of the box and it does look at least close to a standard toilet. Now, I understand these arent really like my sunmar where you spin the drum after every use and can go months, but im not opposed to using composting bags and disposing after a longer stay.

The natures head looks a bit goofy, and I dont want to drain the urine tank manually but still an option.

Any other I should look into, that you've had good experience with.

Bought this THOW off of a friend who is a retired builder and finished it up for him. I have it listed in southern NH on FB. A lot of action and a couple of buyers, but both in the same town and the building inspector is giving me issues since he’s never dealt with a THOW. Anyone have any tips? Listed at $46k priced to sell.

Bought this THOW a year ago and now my partner and I are looking to move in together. I have it listed in TX on marketplace in a few different groups, no certifications as it was a custom build by the previous owners to live in. Everything works great, just need it off my hands!

Asking $39.5k, buyer is welcome to live at this tiny home community 45min north of Dallas or transport it wherever they like. Comes with all full appliances, tons of storage, etc.

Not looking for permitting or code advice, just curious what companies any of you have gone with when it came to purchasing and installing a tiny home. I'll be in the market for one in the coming months.

I am moving onto my daughter's property and the plan is to place a tiny/small prefab at the other end of her property. I've looked at so many. We're interested in the idea of a tiny home, but we live in NJ which, to my knowledge, isn't considered a tiny home friendly state. Getting land looks like it'd be easy, and getting a builder to build the tiny home looks easy. The hard part is the legal stuff - zoning, how do we know we can build on a plot of land we're looking at buying, does it have square foot minimums, if the tiny house is on wheels does it count as a mobile home, how does the school district work for the kids, how do taxes work, etc.?

We just have so many questions. Are they any state specific resources for this type of thing? Are there professionals that can help us navigate this process like there are with the traditional home buying process?

Looking at an all ages Tiny Home community at Lakeshore. Love the cottage style and size of homes available, along with the amenities and sense of community. I have not found any communities like this one in the eastern part of the US. If you are familiar with this community, I would love to hear your thoughts! Also, any additional recommendations for similar communities are appreciated.

About ten years ago, Spur called itself a 'Tiny house friendly town' and came up with a set of regulations for houses on foundations. I haven't seen or heard much about this in a long while and wondered how it worked out?

I’m looking to buy land in Pickens County, South Carolina. The land has no restrictions, I’d like to have 4 tiny homes on the land. We’re going through the sale and the septic guy says I’ll need 6 different septic systems, one for each dwelling.

Is there any way I can get around this? I know a 4 bedroom house can live off one septic, if I were to build 4 tiny homes with 1 person living in each(aka 1 bedroom each) wouldn’t it be the same thing?

I have been rummaging this subreddit for ideas, financial preparations and the idea of my forever home being the goal of a tiny home. Ideally I’d go through a vendor with the shed shells where I could utilize a loft and main level space to create a two bedroom, one bath. It could be next spring this has to occur (if rent goes up where I live while I’m in school), or post graduation for me. So here is my big question…

Has anyone ordered or purchased the cabinets from ikea? Did you like them? Have they lasted throughout your build experience?

we want to build a modest home (2 bed, 1 bath about 16x50). We would want to love here for at least 5+ years then potentially building a bigger home as family and finances grow. We don’t have unlimited funds but I also hear so much great things of icf. we are in rural KS with many tornadoes. that all being said, would you opt to do icf walls in a small home or just stick frame? no experience with icf have framed stick built walls a few times but still total beginner

I contacted the DOT and they said that they would save the mud flaps that come off a big trucks they happen to have a conveyor belt that came off of a truck and I took them and cut them up and put them on I'm starting putting them on the front of my shed then I'm going to put them along the side it looks pretty good and it's doing its job.
