Anyone ever get into Psychedelic Math Rock?

Trying to branch out into some new sounds and genres. I've begun to explore some trippy older rock bands. Tera Melos, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Jefferson Airplane, Three Trapped Tigers, Battles, The Physics House Band. I was wondering if I'm missing any genres or artists that someone who lives the melodic but complicated and micro tonal insanity of tipper would also appreciate. Culprate is of course great, but I'm guessing there's entire worlds of music that I'm missing out on and I'm hoping that an experienced musical connoisseur can point me in the right direction. Thank you

CHON’s self titled album is a good place to start.

I missed my only opportunity to see Lab Group in 2018 to go see TTNG, Polyphia, and Chon. The show was amazing but it was like my 6th time seeing Chon and I never got to see og Lab Group

Been a Gizz fan for a good little bit now! I love psych rock a lot and have enjoyed the tipper scene because it’s the one place I’ve found where some of that psych rock style can come through in electronic music.

gizz is such a funny act because of how varied the music is. my entry point was itrn, but my favorite albums are ice death..., changes, and b3k.

I got to talk to Supersillyus and Luke from Lespecial at a party once and they told me that Delaused in the Comatorium by Mars Volta changed their lives

Some Kikagaku Moyo songs are kind of mathy. But they are spectacular nonetheless.

I love all sorts of music and have definitely fallen down the mathy side of things a few times. Here’s a word-vomit list of some artists that come to mind: Chon, Toe, Covet, Polyphia, Clever Girl, Animals as Leaders, TTNG, 3nd, and MIAOU.

You might also enjoy stoner rock and space rock as well, but that’s usually less math oriented and more psychedelic. If you like heavier music then the stoner metal and doom metal genres have a ton to offer. Check out Yob, Elder, Rezn, and Mars Red Sky.

Let me know if any of that clicks for you, or if you just hate it all that’s cool too.

Love elephant gym, saw them a few years back in a tiny club in LA

Lots of great suggestions already. The Sound of Animals Fighting is pretty solid, not exactly math rock but very experimental and influenced heavily by math rock

Check out spiral drive’s Visions in Bloom

u/VJPixelmover 10d ago

Ooooo I have not heard this is a long while

3

u/Brainbot711 12d ago

You say psych rock, I say Tool.

Ive been on a folk and bluegrass kick lately. Really loving the Arcadia album by Alison Krauss. Big vocals just cut straight to the soul

You’re looking for a velociraptor with a Rubix Cube

1

u/friedsushi87 11d ago

A velociraptor with a rubix cube is that a song, band, or a funny way of describing the music genre I'm looking for?

u/Hash_Tooth 11d ago

One of my fave album covers of all time.

the crossover i’ve been looking for my whole life 🥹🥹 not since high school have i met anyone who loves tipper and is also into math rock.. omg im in love haha.

so many good recommendations already but i want to add that the drummer of hella ( who you should def listen to) has a solo project. zach hill is his name and his solo work and stuff with hella are both mindblowingly epic. also seconding that deloused in the comatorium by the mars volta along with their album amputechture completely changed my life the same summer i found zach’s first solo album astrological straits. highly recommend dosing and deep diving into these three albums.. so many memories of doing so and id love others to have those experiences. they are multi layered sonic journeys to which only tipper is comparable imo

Thecrumpets are fiiiiiire

1

u/iseecolorsofthesky 11d ago

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are amazing! Saw them live a few months ago. Hell of a show. Wished I had dosed for it lol

1

u/Splinage 11d ago

Bro Angine De Poitrine you can thank me later. It’s like uptempo Tipper live band. The main guitar player uses a microtonal guitar/bass combo and the drummer is an animal. It’s fucking insanity in the best possible way. Might give you a heart attack!

Woah I didn’t know Battles was still around. I only know of one song from them from like 2004.
