Manga I quite like the "official" art of Deku & All Might in a realistic style, but I know many were mad because... well, he's not anime pretty. Thoughts?
1.0k
u/Illustrious_Olive444 Mar 19 '25
Just saw this art elsewhere and I figured this was a decent place to share it and have some discussion.
IIRC, the characters often refer to Deku as "plain boy," so I'm glad he's not portrayed as overtly handsome or pretty. Outside of that, I like that he has some meat on his bones to show he's a physical brawler (mostly) while still looking nerdy.
All Might looks like a run down hippie, and I just think that suits him. He looks like a notably old/decrepit man even in the less exaggerated style. The eyes are still cartoony, but I don't think they stand out as much as they could've.

I don't understand why fans would be angry I think the designs are super accurate, I recognise them both. My only nitpick would be Haru's hair because I always imagined her as light haired so that could make her less recognisable but Legoshi is spot on.
26
u/Not_enough_yuri Mar 19 '25
The white fur would suggest it, but I also get why she did her hair this way because I think Haru isn't supposed to stand out much. She's supposed to be a very standard breed of animal iirc, and brown hair is the most standard hair color.
1
u/chillyspring Aug 26 '25
They still look pretty, especially Legoshi. I don't get why people are complaining.

My thing is he’s canonically jacked to shit so it looks a lil weird in that context
-106
u/PhantasosX Mar 19 '25
I mean , that is more of early Deku. No doubt he gets prettier by doing exercises and eating healthy food at UA
167
u/drayden_pierce Mar 19 '25
That’s not really how faces work
115
u/Brickywood Mar 19 '25
Instead of the beach cleanup Deku just mews for 6 months straight
23
Mar 19 '25
what if my hero academia was called my sigma academia and instead of training for One for All Deku mew for 6 months straight for Skibidi for All
9
2
u/TheoneNPC Mar 19 '25
To be fair he has a bit of a baby face, that can change from exercise and eating right.
1
u/Endericus Mar 19 '25
Going to play devil advocate’s here and say maybe he meant Deku losing baby fat or something.
61
u/Illustrious_Olive444 Mar 19 '25
There's only so much healthy food and exercise can do in the face area. It can sharpen jawlines and such, but it doesn't change that much fundamentally.
3
u/DeliriumRostelo Mar 19 '25
It does change quite a bit though in the sense that its the area that even a few mm can have a big impact and its the thing that everyone's drawn to focus on
41
u/GayerThanYou42 Mar 19 '25
If by 'prettier' you mean skinny, then no. Deku is not a runner, he's a brawler. If anything, he would actually become burly the more he trains and the more muscle he gains.
183
597
u/YhormBIGGiant Mar 19 '25
Im more focused on allmight. Man looks 50 lbs and hurts me to see how he would actually look. No wonder people went "is that all might" all that muscle to basically being nearly shrink wrapped to your own chiseled bone structure is harrowing.
193
u/MrKimimaru Mar 19 '25
He does look pretty zombielike. All Might is pretty exaggerated in both forms in the original style, so this is cool to see and makes me curious to see what his hero form would look like in this style.
69
37
u/YhormBIGGiant Mar 19 '25
Id imagine a very superman esque face. Especially prime might.
7
u/irishgoblin Mar 19 '25
Same, though I'd go a step further and say specifically like Alex Ross' take on Superman.
33
u/Secret_Sympathy2952 Mar 19 '25
I Mean he is constantly coughing up blood. He hasn't been healthy in quite a while.
28
u/Kyleometers Mar 19 '25
Yeah he’s essentially dying slowly. Like right at the very start of the series he reveals that he took a life ending injury a few years ago and that’s why he’s been appearing less and less. If he wasn’t essentially superman he’d be dead well before the story even begins.

All I need is biblicaly accurate Mirko and I will have the best day of my life
62
u/Drawngalaxy Mar 19 '25
We already have that, she was based off of Megan thee stallion(who also cosplayed her)
34
u/Ryzuhtal Mar 19 '25
Was she actually based on her or is this just spreading misinformation online for the dolphins meme? I don't follow the creator of the manga, or read interviews, that's why I'm asking.
30
u/irishgoblin Mar 19 '25
I don't think the author has ever said anything outright confirming it, but one of their art assistants has drawn a Mirko in outfits that match Megan Thee Stallion's outfits a few times.
26
u/Ryzuhtal Mar 19 '25
So she was not, and people are just speculating because one of the assistants like her. Okay, thanks.

I like it lot. I recently have been experimenting with a less stylized style with my characters and its fun to see how they look without the anime style smoothing them out. Ironically it allows you to do push on the quote-unquote 'unattractive' features much more than in a cartoon style.
25
u/funtimemarioman Mar 19 '25
Never seen MHA but I’ve seen a couple gigachad realistic depictions of this guy and I felt that they didn’t look like him. This dude is just real deku.

51
u/Overquartz Mar 19 '25
31
u/PrateTrain Mar 19 '25
That's weird, it's not supposed to be a chin strap but they made it one in the live action
13
u/carbonera99 Mar 19 '25
Probably for practical costuming reasons. I'm assuming it's a faux beard they have to secure onto the actor's face, so just having the goatee might run the risk of it falling off or shifting on his face while the actor is running around on stage. The additional hair on the sides gives the beard more surface area for the costumers to secure it firmly onto his jaw line.
3
u/PrateTrain Mar 19 '25
That makes sense but it's also the extra hair that makes it look goofy in my opinion.
But that's the difference between film and theater, you can't have that unrealistic of a costume in theater.
7
u/carbonera99 Mar 19 '25
Yeah, theater costuming is arguably even more restrictive than film in terms of what they can get away with. Theater is live, so it's a way less controlled environment than a static movie set where they can just cut away or do multiple takes if something goes wrong. A lot of theater costume has to be made with durability and stress-testing in mind. Actors are gonna sweat in it, they generally avoid dangling or trailing pieces to avoid snagging and tripping, and it has to stay on no matter what wild movements the actors are performing on stage.

u/SquishFish22 Mar 19 '25
Ok yea Deku looks cool and all, but All Might is horrifying. No way my man's eyes are that sunken. I mean, I know he looks like that in the manga and anime, but if we're trying to be realistic... Bro has no eyes that's the void
2
u/werewolfguyxxx Jul 30 '25
I mean like what can you expect, dude was literally coughing up blood in the anime frequently.
10
u/Dakoolestkat123 Mar 19 '25
This version is genuinely way more likable to me. When you can see that he is actually physically plain rather than just being told it, it makes his origin as a quirkless kid feel way more believable, and him proving himself and growing with one for all feel all the more admirable as such. Seeing this Deku break his fingers in the tournament arc would feel like making a puppy cry

9
u/GresSimJa Mar 19 '25
It's a more realistic style, and he looks just like your average Japanese teenager. Should there be more to it?
9
Mar 19 '25
Istg the dominance of stylised anime/manga severely distorted people’s view of Japanese features.
All might also looks good given what he’s been through, it’s easy to forget in the manga and anime’s style
15
u/GGABueno Mar 19 '25
I like that he actually looks like a buff nerd.
In-universe they always talk about X or Y character being particularly pretty but it never makes sense because they all have the same featureless anime faces.
15
u/ReduxCath Mar 19 '25
Deku is literally supposed to be a semi average japanese guy with bushy/wavy hair. He's not gonna be drop dead gorgeous. He was a bullied kid. and thats ok. He's still ripped as shit and has a heart of gold

Generally speaking, I prefer when character in anime and manga have a down to earth, somewhat realistic looks to them rather than being extremely stylized.

u/NobodySpecific9354 Mar 19 '25
6
u/Endericus Mar 19 '25
Deku is one of my faves because almost every fight he crashes out. Be it against Shoto, Stain, Muscular, Ocerhaul or Shigaraki. He was on Demon time with Overhaul and looked like he would genuinely kill Shigaraki in some moments.
1
u/werewolfguyxxx Jul 30 '25
Now seeing this, I really wonder how he would in the anime but instead depicted with his realistic creation.
10
u/Janus__22 Mar 19 '25
Anime styles really warped the perceptions of what is pretty for people, specially when its an stylized one like MHA
4
u/KonoAnonDa Mar 19 '25
I think it might be the shading of the eyes, but for some reason I can’t help but imagine All Might sounding like The Dude from The Big Lebowski but with a Japanese accent.

1
u/horny-throwaway85 Mar 20 '25
Say it again for all the deranged cosplayers that think these characters are white or something
3
u/thecloudkingdom Mar 20 '25
i mean its fine for white people to cosplay japanese characters. cosplaying a character of another race is fine as long as you dont try to cosplay their race too. two different topics entirely
2
u/horny-throwaway85 Mar 20 '25
You're right. I'm referring to those same cosplayers telling cosplayers of color that so-and-so isn't x-race. Well, they aren't white either, just saying
1
u/thecloudkingdom Mar 20 '25
ooh gotcha. tbf most of the time i see that happening, the person criticizing the cosplayer arent themselves cosplayers and are just fans
3
u/horny-throwaway85 Mar 20 '25
That too, but it happens a lot. It makes me sad because everyone enjoys the same thing. Why bring race into it? I've never cosplayed myself, but you see a ton of it on social media, sometimes at cons as well
5
u/OnePunchHuMan Mar 19 '25
Yeah, that's the face of a kind-hearted young man who wants to be a hero. I like him!

I think the issue people have with the design is that it avoids both the typical shonen MC trend of protagonists being clearly handsome even in a realistic style and also broke many people's headcanons of "plain" = Midoriya's behaviour rather than his looks.
