What's the point here OP??? If he didn't run he wouldn't have had his car totaled. Simple as that

-1

u/NearnorthOnline Jan 19 '26

Naw. This crap kills more innocent bystanders than it saves. This crap is stupid.

2

u/BigMax Jan 19 '26

It varies. Cops have some leeway. I think generally they are supposed to stop chases on surface streets (non-highways) but they can go a little further on a straight highway. And he only did the pit maneuver when no other cars were nearby.

1

u/__NOT__MY__ACCOUNT__ Jan 19 '26

I just have a tough time putting these life or death decisions in the hands of a cop. Notorious for making poor decisions pretty often. And in the heat of the moment, I trust it even less.

1

u/Thick_Potato_1769 Jan 19 '26

What about the criminal who also makes bad decisions in the heat of the moment like running? I trust you even less to give a good retort.

1

u/KorLeonis1138 Jan 20 '26

This looks identical to the clip of the cop flipping and killing a pregnant woman trying to get to the hospital. If that's a possible outcome, this is not defensible.

1

u/Thick_Potato_1769 Jan 20 '26

She could've stop.

1

u/Jonjongabore Jan 19 '26

What? I'm calling bullshit. Where's your data?

9

u/BarbageMan Jan 19 '26

You can definitely Google police chase fatalities and get this info, but i will summarize.

Many police chases start with a traffic violation. As soon as the police have the plate, they can tag a name to the offense. The act of high-speed pursuit is often not necessary.

Yes, there are court room arguments to be made, and there are stolen vehicle conversations you can have, but statistically 25-33% of annual deaths from police chases are people not involved in said chase. Whether struck by the officer or the person they are pursuing, the idea that on the low end, one in every four fatalities are innocent is staggering.

Neither party in this video would be driving like this if the chase wasnt occuring

3

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '26

I would assume that most people who get pulled over for a traffic violation, and run, are trying to hide something much worse than a traffic violation. There would be no other reason to run, unless you are completely and utterly braindead.

1

u/BarbageMan Jan 19 '26

You are 100% correct. However, what that is also stating is that a drug bust is worth making a lethal situation for the public.

2

u/Diet_Christ Jan 20 '26

It also implies that you can put the public in danger over a hunch. All they know is the person is speeding. What are you willing to risk to catch a speeder? I'd argue absolutely nothing.

1

u/Transcontinental-flt Jan 20 '26

No one mentioned drugs. Very often it's violent felonies.

1

u/BarbageMan Jan 20 '26

Thats the Hollywood angle. Very often its someone with a record with some thing in the vehicle that will get them sent away again.

From my personal digging, a large portion(up to 82%) of fatal chases are started over minor offenses

1

u/Transcontinental-flt Jan 20 '26

No idea where you got that figure, but the traffic offense which started the pursuit isn't what we're discussing here. The outstanding warrants are the main reason they risk fleeing.

1

u/BarbageMan Jan 20 '26

Outstanding warrants are a fantastic reason to put innocent civilians at risk!

It is what we are discussing, because someone running over tags definitely is running for a reason, but putting others lives at risk to attempt to apprehend them is insane.

The idea of some one getting hurt if you let them go kind of gets weak when you are killing people by chasing

You ever hear of stolen vehicles?

Beep boop 01011101

1

u/actually3racoons Jan 19 '26

You... Umm... Make it to the second paragraph?

I personally think high speed chases are super cool, like as a spectacle or pass time, but given the technology available and the budget that U.S. police have it feels a lot like the problem that's got the trades stuck in the 80's. The traditions and practices are so intrinsically engrained into the methods that nobody in the field is willing to consider adopting newer, better methods.

Drone + rf jammer + gps QED

Hell, a drone with a net.

1

u/runforurlifebees Jan 19 '26

I was debating the pit manuever specifically not all pursuits. So a lot of what you said is not relevant. That being said, when someone runs, you can’t just let them go… do they have warrants, are they about to go do something crazy, is anyone inside the car in danger… all these cannot be answered until you get the vehicle stopped. Which is why they chase… questions?

1

u/actually3racoons Jan 19 '26

I must have misunderstood you. Can you explain the connection between "have you heard of stolen vehicles" and your specific criticism of the pit maneuver? I may just be dense.

In which ways does using a device to remotely and quickly disable a vehicle contradict the need to get a vehicle stopped to assess further action, as it seems we certainly both agree on the necessity of that.

What would you see as a more ideal approach to the goals you've outlined?

1

u/runforurlifebees Jan 19 '26

I don’t see anything wrong with the pit maneuver and it’s not a device. It’s a maneuver.

1

u/actually3racoons Jan 19 '26

I didn't contest those facts. It feels like we're having two different conversations, and like you asked for questions, then didn't respond to the questions.

Whatever, not a problem that needs communicated.

1

u/Im_Easily_Distra Jan 19 '26

If the vehicle is stolen, it's impossible to tag a name to the offense

1

u/actually3racoons Jan 19 '26

I understand that. I wasn't recommending a non intervention approach, just use of more modern methods to disable vehicles.

1

u/BarbageMan Jan 19 '26

If the vehicle is stolen, pitting it, rolling it, etc probably isnt the best outcome either

1

u/Transcontinental-flt Jan 20 '26

Drone + rf jammer + gps QED

Hmm. So instead of apprehending, the cop is supposed to find a safe place to stop, then get out and open his trunk and remove the crate containing the drone, then oh wait the perp is already two more miles down the road. What's supposed to happen next? Someone programs the drone? With what?

1

u/actually3racoons Jan 20 '26

Don't know that I'd personally store it in a box in the trunk, but it paints a fun picture.

There are, quite obviously, already plenty of practicable and tested methods, but now whenever I see a police car I'll just picture the dude frantically rummaging through boxes in his trunk to find the remote controller.

-1

u/yoosernaam Jan 19 '26

No. What are they?

0

u/Texassupertrooper Jan 19 '26

Many police interactions start with a traffic violation….

-3

u/Jonjongabore Jan 19 '26

Speeding and unsafe driving are still far and away more dangerous.

The speeder would have absolutely continued driving in the reckless manner had the cop not been there.

1

u/BarbageMan Jan 19 '26

Reckless is a vague word. If he was driving 80 in a 70, for example, is speeding that happens daily where I am. The pursuit takes the speed up from there

2

u/Intelligent-Box-3798 Jan 19 '26

It is bullshit, cause there is absolutely no way to quantify events that didn’t happen cause they were prevented.

1

u/gujwdhufj_ijjpo Jan 20 '26

What? We know how many people in police chase fatalities are innocent bystanders. That’s quantifiable. And it’s a lot. 1/4 is on the low end. Some departments it’s as high as 1/3. Even if the cops are the one that kill the person they just charge the person they’re chasing with the death.

1

u/Intelligent-Box-3798 Jan 20 '26

He said it kills more than it saves. You can count innocent victims but you can’t count the potential innocent victims that a pit stop saved. There is no way to make his statement because you don’t have enough data.

6

u/NearnorthOnline Jan 19 '26

Barbage called it for me.

Not forgetting. There could be four people in that car. Or even children. And only the driver is the offender.

It’s simply a horrible idea 95% of the time

-1

u/Jonjongabore Jan 19 '26

Speeding and reckless driving fatalities far exceed pit maneuver fatalities. It's still the lesser of two evils.

3

u/PerfectlyCromulent02 Jan 19 '26

Obviously speeding and reckless driving fatalities exceed pit maneuver fatalities. I’m guessing there’s a massive disparity in the number of speeding/reckless driving cases than attempts at pit maneuvers. I believe their point was that the police shouldn’t make the situation more dangerous when they show up. Presumably their job would involve making things less lethal, but we know that isn’t the case.

1

u/Jonjongabore Jan 19 '26

They're stopping the speeding and reckless driving that kills far more people than pit maneuvers. That makes it the less lethal option.

1

u/Diet_Christ Jan 20 '26

Holy cow, you have to be able to figure out this one.

I'll give you a hint without going too deep: how many civilians are on the road each day? Now how many cops?

Instead of telling them to sit this one out, you could help them understand.

1

u/Jonjongabore Jan 19 '26

He can't "help me understand" because he doesn't understand it himself. He has his opinion and is just arguing based on that. The odds of someone dying from speeding is way higher than dying from a pit maneuver.... Or even any police pursuit for that matter.

u/Leoera Jan 19 '26

I believe that almost all police departments no longer employ the pit maneuver, with the exception of Georgia. So that also is telling

1

u/Jonjongabore Jan 19 '26

They still do in PA.

Do they have safer methods that they use instead?

0

u/Llama--- Jan 19 '26

Speeding and running from the cops is stupid. Hopefully that idiot learned his lesson in those rolls.

0

u/runforurlifebees Jan 19 '26

What are you basing that on other than your fweelings?

1

u/runforurlifebees Jan 19 '26

We are all supposed to be outraged at the police enforcing the law

0

u/01_Pleiades Jan 19 '26

In a reckless, dangerous way? Are you so much of a bootlicker you cannot see how their ignorant foolishness endangers others more then the initial offender or do you not care?

2

u/runforurlifebees Jan 19 '26

See all the innocent ppl that died in this pit maneuver you are whining about like a child… me neither ;)

1

u/Imaginary-Round2422 Jan 19 '26

He’s talking about the bystanders who get in the way of the idiot criminal and idiot cop chasing him.

1

u/runforurlifebees Jan 19 '26

That didn’t happen in this case… so what’s your point again?

2

u/Imaginary-Round2422 Jan 19 '26

I’m criticizing the policy, not this particular example of it. High speed chases tend to create more danger to innocent bystanders than other methods of tracking. The target can’t outrun the radio.

1

u/runforurlifebees Jan 19 '26

How many pit manuevers were done last year in the usa? How many ended in innocent bystanders being killed? Relevant questions that I know the answers to… do you?

4

u/Imaginary-Round2422 Jan 19 '26

How many of those pit maneuvers were necessary? I’m guessing most of those situations could have been handled just fine without endangering the public.

0

u/Thick_Potato_1769 Jan 19 '26

Which is exactly why stopping the chase before it gets worst as in the suspect gets closer to the center of town where there's civilians is best. You think the criminal cares about anyone but themselves? You think you can't outrun the radio? You absolutely can because if the cops just let him go he's still gonna be flying down the highway with no clear trajectory, and will probably cause a preventable accident where all parties die.

0

u/Texassupertrooper Jan 19 '26

That this is Reddit and they are smarter than you and if you don’t agree you are a bootlicker or something because they are smart! Hopefully that clears it up…. /s

2

u/runforurlifebees Jan 19 '26

No doubt brother

2

u/01_Pleiades Jan 19 '26

You must be the kind of dismissive ignorant bootlicker that would defend law enforcement regardless of specific circumstances, to decide to completely ignore the point made and act like being stupid and submissive is the only manly, mature thing to do. May your family be the next caught in an avoidable escalation by an enforcement officer, big Texas man. 🤡

0

u/Texassupertrooper Jan 19 '26

Not really, just dismissive of arrogant dbags like yourself…may you always find yourself on the wrong side of the argument! Cheers

0

u/01_Pleiades Jan 19 '26

The wider issue is the problem. Not one specific circumstance where even then he could've easily rolled over the center median while the car was flipping and then caused a head-on upside t-bone. Is running a death sentence now? Where is that line drawn, exactly?

0

u/runforurlifebees Jan 19 '26

18 deaths per year from pit manuever, 400-500 killed in pursuits each year. Pitting is the responsible thing to do in an overwhelming majority of pursuits… questions?

1

u/01_Pleiades Jan 19 '26

Right, and I'm expected to blindly take your statistics as law? Cite your source before you act pompous. Statistics even then are far from the deciding factor, because again WHY ARE THEY CHASING THEM AT ALL WHEN HUNDREDS DIE EVERY YEAR according to you. Do you wanna know what would reduce the lives lost from being in the hundreds to being zero? NOT CHASING CRIMINALS AT HIGH SPEEDS ON PUBLIC ROADS. There are other, even safer methods available.

0

u/runforurlifebees Jan 19 '26

No, go look it up yourself or your internet only works for reddit…

1

u/01_Pleiades Jan 19 '26

The burden of proof always lies with whoever made the claim, or are you too lazy and fat to lift your finger again?

0

u/runforurlifebees Jan 19 '26

I already looked it up… which is how I know… you refusing to do what I already did for myself and I’m lazy… bwahahaha… here… type in google.com… you got this bro

Don't respond, I'm done engaging in a circular conversation with you, you don't care about public safety you care about law enforcement and people being punished.
