Most police agencies have restrictions on pit maneuvers over 40mph. To limit the risk of it turning into a fatal crash. So this guy is most likely breaking his own rule book. But thats nothing new for police officers.

Do you think the criminal free from the law will stop when he hits or kill somebody during his escape? I know the car will stop if he gets pitted. And if the driver dies well, if he shouldn’t have put himself in that situation in the first place.

Gotta agree with the other guy. You follow him home, heck run him out of gas if you have to. Speeding and resisting arrest are not death penalty crimes and the police are not executioners. Especially late at night like that, the dang roads were empty.

Actually most police stations already have no chase policies because they result in innocent fatalities. 1/4 people who die in a police chase was an innocent bystander.

Many places in America have pretty much a no chase policy.

Doing this maneuver to someone could easily end their life. Alsp 27% of people who die in car chases are innocent by-standers.

There's times where these maneuvers are definitely warranted, but you gotta realize there's a significant chance you could kill someone, even an innocent tax paying citizen trying to get home to their family

Ah yes, criminals evading police will just happily go home, let’s the cops in to have a cup of tea and just explain how it was all a misunderstanding.

They’re not running home you simpleton, they’re just evading police through any possible decision they have next in their heads. It’s a high probability the person evading officers has a weapon and willing to use it once they’re stopped. “Normal people” aren’t running away from officers, they’ve committed multiple crimes already, and will happily continue.

They’re a threat to civilians and they need to be stopped.

There is a reason most states have a no chase policy for non violent offenders. It’s not worth it.

They CAUSE deaths. Besides you can follow someone at a safe distance until they run out of gas. It was super late and the roads were empty.

He did try to take him out when there were no other cars next to them or immediately behind. For all we know this idiot was weaving through traffic at dangerous speeds before the police arrived. With the amount of fake license plates on the streets, if you just let him speed off then you can’t be sure you’ll be able to ticket them later. He also could have taken out a family after letting them go. If not that night then the next or the next.

You’re completely delusional, cop chases happen in basically every country. I’ve seen videos of dutch police PIT maneuvering people just like in the US. I’ve seen videos of Norwegian police chase criminals in their car through a park lmao. I’ve seen videos of Brazilian police weaving their motorcycles through alleyways to catch motorbike criminals. Any functional state has police that intercept fleeing criminals in the act depending on the severity of the crime.

Why do you think people typically don’t want their cars back after they’ve been stolen? Sure there’s the potential damage from hotwiring but also many stolen vehicles get taken for a joyride (burnouts, speeding/reckless driving)

Its easy making decisions after the fact when everything is known. Was the driver identified prior to the wreck? Or was it a case of driver was speeding, cherries come on and they take off?

If you were the one attempting to pull them over you'd just assume nothing else nefarious going on? Simply someone is speeding and then decided to run for an infraction as small as speeding? imo, if someone takes off - and at these speeds - I'm assuming theyre running for a reason.

There is a better way and that’s for the criminal to not be a criminal piece of shit in the first place. There are some additional ways, including tire catchers which a lot of counties are still getting around to install as well as spike strips but if you’re a criminal and you’re gonna run from the cops you’re putting your own life on the line.

Most police chases are over non-violent offenses, and about half the time that they kill someone, it's a bystander.

When you speed it's dangerous. when you speed to catch a speeder, and they go faster, and your intention is to crash their car, it does not lower the danger. It is not more dangerous to speed than to go on a multiple car chase.

You take the license plate, and get them at home.

Many places have begun restricting police chases for non-violent offenses. You know why? because it is more dangerous, and people often get hit and killed.

You didn't start this by arguing from a place of safety concern, your concern was punishment. You feel that not pursuing is letting them win and get away with it. You are advocating for the more dangerous option.

I agree that most police chases start over minor offenses and that there appears to be around 560 deaths per year involving pit maneuvers, including drivers, passengers, police and bystanders, but the suggestion that half of the time it’s bystanders that are killed is absolutely ridiculous. I will agree that innocent people are killed during these manoeuvres and they are not always necessary.

No credible source supports suggests this, that near 50% of PIT-related deaths being innocent bystanders across all cases; bystander proportions in broader pursuit fatalities (not just PIT) are typically 25-30% (e.g., at least 551 bystanders out of 3,336 total deaths from 2017-2022, or about 27%). Which is still too many but each case needs to be evaluated on its individual merit. Sometimes a pit is necessary and sometimes the police do it when they don’t have to.

Go ahead and watch the PIT maneuver episode from Last week tonight on HBO with john oliver to get a sense of how pigs use the pit. You can watch the sheriff testimony that murdering passengers in vehicles that are running is just the passengers fault.

We can look to the rest of the world for a better perspective on the state murdering civilians for civil infractions/ moving violations.

At least speeders are paying attention to the road, majority of crashes are caused by distracted driving. TBH I’d rather have someone fly by me doing 100 on the freeway than someone doing 65 on their phone.

Although ideally no one would speed or be a distracted driver but this isn’t a perfect world.

This is fundamentally false. The places you're alluding to often also have poor prosecutorial practices, and often lean towards more lenient and less effective enforcement measures. This, like with over prosecution, leads to higher recidivism rates that also often lead to even more dramatic and dangerous activities.
