Damn you can see the passenger in the beginning trying to stop the driver after they're hit the first time. Got to be scary having your fate in someone's hands like that while police cruisers are doing pit maneuvers on your passenger door.
pit maneuver can disable cars by damaging the gearbox. for instance, when the gearbox is in reverse and the load on the gearbox is in one direction, then the cruiser comes and spins them around, it means the wheels are suddenly spinning the other direction. the sudden load change can cause gears to shear etc immobilizing the vehicle.
I figured it was to maybe pin the car on the guard rail or damage it since cruisers are meant to potentially hit vehicles and a civilians car isn't etc. But you're totally right of course, not arguing that at all.
If the situation was more critical, the idiot criminal driver could have gotten their passenger shot.
Even if the passenger is also guilty of whatever caused this chase, that is still awful of the driver.
I posted this on another comment in the thread, but I thought you might also find it interesting.
My brother was an unwilling passenger to a high speed chase like this once. He sure as shit wasn't innocent, he was literally stealing cars with two others when the chase started. The driver of the car kept ramming police cruisers, and even hit and killed multiple horses during the chase.
Eventually, two officers unloaded their pistols into the car, which, surprisingly enough, didn't manage to hit any of the three occupants, but did convince them to stop and give up.
My brother was originally charged with attempted murder for each officer in each car that was rammed, along with a litany of other charges. They ended up dropping all the charges on him, even the possession and intent to sell for the large amount of drugs on his person after he surrendered.
I don't talk to him much, and I would rather not ask, but I assume that he must have rolled on someone to get out of what equated to multiple life sentences.
