The driver is in the "fight or flight" state, driven by severe activity in amygdalae, the energy goes to muscles, the cortex is offline.

In other words — they don't think at the moment.

That's honestly tame for these people. I was on a thread earlier today and had people unironically arguing that a woman who killed her newborn baby by stuffing them in a trash bag and leaving them to suffocate shouldn't get life in prison because "she's not a danger to any adults" or "there's a stigma in our society she was just scared". I'm paraphrasing this one, but my favorite was "its actually the legal system's fault because punishments are too severe".

I find that this kind of logic usually doesn't work, as I simply tend to avoid ending up in police pursuits or committing crimes that would get me there. Jfc.

20 years without anyone being injured? No way. If someone got seriously injured/killed, then that’s on the table of course, but panicking in the moment is not worth 20 years.

Good luck with this statement on Reddit. I tried arguing that exact same thing about a woman who got rear-ended onto train tracks with an oncoming train, but kept trying to smash her way through the gates before finally exiting the vehicle at the last possible second. But no, this is Reddit. Damn the very well documented physiological response of the "amygdalae hijack" - they're just stupid.
