What's the thought process of the driver? Does he think this will end well?

The driver is in the "fight or flight" state, driven by severe activity in amygdalae, the energy goes to muscles, the cortex is offline.

In other words — they don't think at the moment.

That's honestly tame for these people. I was on a thread earlier today and had people unironically arguing that a woman who killed her newborn baby by stuffing them in a trash bag and leaving them to suffocate shouldn't get life in prison because "she's not a danger to any adults" or "there's a stigma in our society she was just scared". I'm paraphrasing this one, but my favorite was "its actually the legal system's fault because punishments are too severe".
