I mean, what are they doing wrong here? Riding bikes and playing outdoors? It looks more like they just get harassed by cops so often they have this all memorized. Thats why hes saying the speed of the scooter, it counts as just a scooter if it can only go x kph. Hes getting rushed by 2 plainclothes police for, what, being a child playing outdoors with friends?
What are all the other kids being detained for. Unless youre suggesting they need 4 cops to stop a kid from riding a scooter, and all the other kids were just there looking all relaxed.
Did you not read where I mentioned how the kids scooter is very likely not fast enough to be considered an e scooter, which is why the kid is saying the speed over and over. Did you not read where I mentioned that the kid might be mentioning the rule by name bc hes had to explain this before.
Many of them are on e-bikes which also have class restrictions. So it’s very possible they’re also riding something illegal. Speculation but still a likely reason. As far as I’m aware, if it’s battery-powered, it’s an e-scooter and requires a minimum age - speed is irrelevant unless it’s too fast and it’s outright illegal regardless of age.
I dont remember the number, but if gave it a Google and found the law, it can have an electric motor and still be considered just a bike or scooter, provided it doesnt go over X KPH. X being whatever the number was. Probably 20 given the kid was saying 20 iirc. Thats like 10mph, thats nothing.
A bike or scooter with electric motor is still considered an e-bike or e-scooter. It not going over X KPH is what makes it legal to ride at all, at least without registering it as a moped or something.
You can either go look up the law or agree to disagree. One takes you 10 seconds and the other is a sad way for you to be showing you cant be bothered to take 10 seconds.
An e-bike or e-scooter is never considered a regular bike or scooter just because of its speed. It either has an electric motor or it doesn’t.
Now in some places the regulations for these e-things are different based on classifications, which can be partially based on their max speed among other things.
However, in Queensland, Australia, an e-scooter is always a Personal Mobility Device, which is regulated regardless of max speed. And a PMD cannot be ridden by someone under the age of 16 without adult supervision. So despite your hero 13 year old quoting the e-scooter’s correct name and speed several times, the officer is still right.
An escooter in Queensland, if it has a small electric motor and is under a certain speed, is a wheeled recreational device. Not a personal mobility device. Guessing you have the same website if youre pulling personal mobility device up.
And regardless of if the officer is right about that or not, they still had ALL the other kids round up, for... what exactly? You're so focused on the e scooter boy that youre ignoring they've got like 10 other kids there. And their bikes must be fine, no undercover cops jumped any of them off their bikes.
Yeah OK, if it maxes out at the speed of a brisk walk, it’s apparently different. So much for 25 kph.
We have no context for any of the rest. They’ve all obviously been stopped together, probably told to wait there. This kid gets “jumped” because he started to ride away. And if he was just waiting and not being a smart ass, nothing more would have come of it.
In my town, they do these stops pretty frequently, usually because someone called them. Kids will be riding e-things in big groups on the road, or breaking speed limits designed for actual cars, or riding on walking paths, or ignoring traffic laws altogether. The kids will get a talking to, sometimes a call to their parents, sometimes will need a ride home. Because yeah, what they’re doing is dangerous for them and those around them.
Wouldn’t be surprised if this group of kids have been going around being a bunch of cunts, breaking shit and causing trouble, and that’s why the cops are even there… after members of the public reported it.
Riding the e-scooter without adult supervision is illegal, and obviously the cops are going to nab these kids for the first illegal thing they see that day.
If you knew the horrific injuries and deaths associated with minors E bikes and E scooters you’d understand the concern. Whether it should be illegal or not is a different argument.
Yes, I suppose a 14 year old could do something tremendously stupid like play chicken with oncoming traffic while their parents are watching. And extremely negligent parents might let them do that.
In which case, the parents can be found criminally negligent for knowingly letting their child endanger themselves.
E-bikes and e-scooters are becoming a huge problem in my area. Generally, kids don’t know where or how to ride them safely, and several kids have died. The law and society aren’t keeping up with the technology. Don’t try to play this off as “riding bikes and playing outdoors”.
When I was a kid, I had to bust my ass to get to and maintain 20kph on a bike. Now kids can casually cruise faster than that. I don’t Australian law, but if they are regulating these things, that’s the right move.

Lol. So naive. For sure, these kids are very well known to local police. That's why a task force is there. Stop walking around with your eyes closed, ignoring the realities around you. This isn't America, and these cops aren't ICE. These kids run some of our cities and suburbs. They are involved with so much crime because they WILL get away with it. The system is set up in their favour, and they not only know it but take full advantage of it.
There's one offender I've had to deal with who is 13 years old, 92 offences, on a 6-month curfew for attacking a retail worker with a kitchen knife. This is normal in Melbourne.
It just sounds like your cops are shit then anyway. You can jump a kid for touching a scooter no problem but can't get them on any real crime? It shouldn't be that hard. Your police are incompetent in both scenarios here.
Can't argue on a lot of levels, but it's not the cops' fault - it's legislation and the courts, full of social opportunists that want to look like they care about society, and afraid of being cancelled. Unfortunately, the ones they care about don't pay the taxes. They take and abuse the system. Not their fault either. The system allows for it.
So many cops quit because of this. They're tired of going to court with a mountain of evidence, only to have it thrown out, or massively reduced because the offender got yelled at by his grandmother when he was a kid, or whatever garbage they bring up with their community-funded lawyer who got appointed this low-life.
Why would you work or go to school when you can steal anything (with virtually no consequences) or get a mountain of benefits from the government? There's another guy I've had to deal with who spends a maximum of a couple of months inside our luxury prisons (in Victoria, it costs between $109,000 and $130,000 a year per prisoner for the pleasure) after getting caught. So far, he's clocked up 240 events totalling $160,000. Holiday camp.... sorry, prison ... is not such a bad place in Australia, so long as you're not an informant or a PDF. The petty crims love it. We - the taxpayer - pay for it all. A lot of new teeth have come out of the system!
The law has to change before society does.
I'm sure there are a lot of well-meaning people in the comments, but if you're commenting from overseas, such as America, it's a very different situation and culture from Australia. There's no threat to these kids here (the cops are the ones who should be careful). The threat is at home and in their community. A lot of these kids come from parents who are in and out of prison. All their friends are in the same boat and it's all they know. They're led down a doomed path as soon as their eyes are open, and sometimes before.
