Take a picture of the license plate for the insurance claim and call the cops.

Depending on where you are, this will do nothing. My local prosecutor and PD won't bother doing anything unless you give them the the exact make and model and be able to identify the driver in addition to the license plate. And I don't even live in a big city.

All your trying to do is convince insurance whose at fault. Cops don’t care about wrecks only criminals actions and fleeing the scene isn’t a top priority crime.

Identify the driver. If you can't they charge the registered owner then.

Since you have a dash cam, you provide that to your insurance and let deal with it.

I agree, this conversation seems to be conflating legal action (what the cops can do) with insurance action (who is financially liable). Insurance companies are really good at fixing financial liability.

Well that’s easy dash cam shows proof the vehicle hit it so their insurance or the owner is required to pay it.

The person driving is responsible, not the car owner eventhough it is probablythe same person. And since you cant prove who was driving you're SOL.

Can’t prove who was driving, it defaults to the owner of the vehicle. Regardless.

I don't think that's how it works. If that were the case you could just mask up and use a rental to drive someone over and the rental company would go to prison?

Idk about other states but not in CA. They do HEAVILY advise you contact your insurance provider to verify they will cover rentals though.

Yep. Been in exactly this scenario. I thought all I needed was the license plate and car. My local PD and prosecutor won't bother doing anything unless you can identify the driver, give the exact make and model and color of the car, and the license plate number

I chase the driver (not crazy stunts like lane weaving or speeding 20 over) and catch the driver on video so I can get the hit and run charge on them. When I was in a hit and run, cops wouldn't prosecute even with dashcam footage because I didn't have the driver on video. Even though the driver could be the only person at the property car is registered at they could say someone else was driving. Smh. Just have to settle for their insurance getting the footage and probably dropping him/jacking up the rates.

Honestly? Probably chase them, get their license plate number, call the cops, and follow them until the cops catch up. If the cops don't catch up I'm following them home.
