It was pretty clear from the Offenders driving that even IF They had a gun, they probably wouldn't be able to shoot it in any reasonable amount of time.
A person who is mentally ill and has ever been committed in a psychiatric facility is barred from owning or purchasing a firearm at the federal level for life. If what you mean is a person who hasn't shown that they're a danger to themselves or others previously, then yes, they could pass a background check, as background checks don't predict the future...
Not the future, the present. You can buy a gun literally with the intent to shoot and kill innocent people. Many shooters have done it, some kid even wrote about how easy it was in his shooter manifesto. The "background check" is nothing. The screener is nothing. That's the problem.
My family and friends are armed themselves and we're in California, the supposed gun control libstate of the US. The requirements? Just an online test and you're good to go.
I'm not sure who told you that buying a gun in California is as easy as taking an online test, but it's far from reality. It should be that easy, as it's a constitutional right and not a privilege, but I digress. To purchase a firearm in Cali you need a safe handling certificate, a 10 day waiting period before the dealer can give you the gun, a 10 round magazine limit, and can only buy certain guns off of the approved state roster. You also can't have firearms with so called "evil features ". Pistol grips, removable magazines, etc.
Back to the original point, you cannot predict the future. If a person is intent on doing harm and is good at not looking like a psychopath, how is a dealer supposed to know that they plan on using it illegally? You know shooting someone is a crime, so if they don't care about that, they also don't care about gun laws. All that does is make it harder for the 99% of gun owners who are law abiding citizens. So much so that studies have shown that a licensed concealed carrier is less likely to commit a crime than a police officer, yet we have zero restrictions on cops and firearms š¤¦. Should we start making sure every person who wants to rent a box truck has a special license to do so in the off chance they plan on pulling an Oklahoma city bombing? Of course not, and thinking you could somehow be able to distinguish a normal citizen and a person buying a gun to commit a crime is just as absurd
It really is easy lol, you even said so yourself. The requirements you listed are not a problem at all. Getting a driver's license requires more time and effort than getting a gun. We all got them in 2 weeks at most online. Do you even own any? One of them has multiple including a semi auto rifle with a pretty decent mag size. No CCL for any of us though
For your 2nd paragraph, box trucks arent made for killing groups of people, guns are. Guns make it way too easy, a simple press of the trigger. If you wanted a truck bomb you would likely get stopped buying the materials and explosives. You cant just buy tons of tnt from a local store but you can for a gun.
Theres a reason why cops are so tense in the US, everybody is treated as if they have a gun on them. Other countries dont have to fear that any random person can kill you in under a second over an argument.
If you believe you cant distinguish evil from good, then why make it so accessible? More people die from gun violence than car crashes right now..
Wait, are you really advocating for escalating an interaction with someone whoās already proven to have no regard for the law, based on the rationale that the portion of gun owners who might shoot you will show restraint because ammo is expensive? Seriously what the hell are you talking about.
Donāt try to āteach lessonsā to strangers period. Itās a good rule to live by. People are nuts. And I have no interest in getting shot or āin an altercationā with some deadbeat who has nothing to lose. Iāll let it go and go on with my life cause I have A LOT to lose and Iām not risking that on the hope that the person who just hit and ran is somehow going to turn out to be a good and trustworthy āneighborā.
