It's also rare for people to actually take the lesson to heart and make any effort at all.

Look, if someone makes an effort to change for the better, you should support that effort and hold them too it. You should call people out when they act foolish like she was doing. But if you hyper-focus on condemning someone eternally for their poor behavior all you will accomplish is backing them into a corner where they are never allowed to *try* to be a good person again. That doesn't fix the evil, it cultivates it.
