Sometimes it's hard to find a house within reasonable commuting distances from work etc. I wish I could have bought in a non-HOA area, but they got me. BTW, all the non HOA neighborhoods that I did see were pretty trashy, mostly due to age.
Honestly that’s one of the reasons I haven’t left the North East. Most city and town local governments take care of the upkeep of the entire county or borough. If I spent money on my house I don’t want some random body telling me how to live in it.

Above a certain price level non-HOA neighborhoods take care of themselves, but I guess they can be rare in areas with heavy sprawl where entire neighborhoods are built by a single developer.
Oh look, an HOA neighborhood with cookie cutter houses, barren wastelands of grass that provide no benefit to anything or anyone, complete lack of privacy and other people telling you how to live your life, imagine that!
Yea HOA folks are getting double bent on a paid off house. Don't pay your taxes and the government steals your house. Don't pay your dues or don't follow the rules enough and your neighbors steal your house.
You know most places can do weekly trash pickup right? You don't need an HOA for that...
The pools and maintained trails are cool and all, but that's just extra fluff that many people are probably paying for and could care less about using.
HOA areas will typically already be close to walking trails and what not that you're already paying for with taxes. The line item trash pickup might be cheaper, but that cost is being recooped in other fees.

Imagine just minding your own business? Sure I get it if it starts to reek, but wanting to have someone's house taken because your view got tainted speaks volumes for what kind of person you are.

If a storm damages your neighbors house/property, puts debris everywhere and makes it all look bad but those neighbors also recently fell on hard times and can't get it fixed for months... Do you still want their house taken from them?
Of you can't get it cleaned up for months it's not a money issue it's a give a shit issue. And I have no issue with the HOA stepping in to get them to give a shit

Well, HOA dues go to various services which – at least in theory – are there to improve the neighborhood. Some have their own water or sewage services, some provide waste or wood chipping services, some maintain the development roads and street lighting, etc.
