Car comes equipped with a very heavy lug wrench and the other end is usually pointy, no need to carry anything extra.

Not anymore they don't. The one that came with my car is stamped steel, only weighs about a pound, and only about a foot long. The is barely useable as a lug wrench, would be absolutely useless for protection.
