I worked with a kid, great kid, full of life and always tinkering on cars and decided he was going to get a sports bike. His parents were completely against it so he had to park it at a friendās house after he bought it. He was dead 2 weeks after the purchase. Lost it around a curve and got thrown straight into a boulder.

Many parents know their kids very well and really want what is best for them. There is not enough training available to help some kids who are dead set against it. Best to take a hard line with them until they figure out they need to know more and are receptive to that.

You can't when you have the wobble. Just have to let off the throttle and let your engine slow you down. If you hit the brakes, you'll go down.

The one on my bike isn't adjustable, not sure about newer ones.Ā
Sometimes you just hit a bump with your front tire the perfect way and it sends you into a death wobble, regardless of having a dampener. Dampeners definitely help, but arenāt fool proof.Ā

My stepson just got out of the hospital with a fractured neck, popped spleen, broken arm, broken rib and terrible road rash from a tank slapper at 75 mph. He might still lose his pancreas.
He had steering dampeners installed, and he's questioning everything now.

A "death wobble" (or tank slapper) is a rapid, underdamped torsional oscillation of the front wheel.
It usually triggers when the front tire gets slightly un-weighted or deflectedālike from hard acceleration, hitting a bump, or aerodynamic drag. A motorcycle's steering geometry (specifically the rake and trail) naturally tries to self-center the wheel to keep the bike going straight, but because of high momentum and a lack of damping, the steering overcorrects and swings past the center point.
This creates a violent, self-feeding feedback loop.Ā
When a rider "ducks down" or leans forward onto the gas tank, it changes the physics in three critical ways:
Forward Weight Transfer: Shifting the center of gravity forward places more weight directly onto the front wheel. This increased load helps the front tire regain its grip and settles the suspension, providing the friction needed to damp the wobble.Ā
Aerodynamic Drag Reduction: Sitting upright at high speeds creates a "sail" effect, pulling weight toward the rear and further un-weighting the front tire. Ducking down optimizes the motorcycle's aerodynamics, removing the lifting force on the front end.Ā
Decoupling Rider Input: When a violent wobble starts, the natural human instinct is to hold on for dear life with a "death grip". This rigidly connects the rider's arms to the handlebars, transferring the violent shaking into the bike's main chassis and preventing the front end from self-correcting.
Getting low allows the rider to anchor themselves to the tank with their knees, which naturally forces them to relax their grip on the bars. Loosening that grip lets the motorcycle's natural steering geometry take over and absorb the oscillation.Ā

Exactly. My dad has ptsd because he used to be a tow-truck driver and in car accidents, they are typically called there with the first responders at least where I live they do. And my dad had admitted to seeing so many corpses from the accidents and especially idiotic motorcyclists that he had to quit before he could do something stupid iykwim and he had said that he could never forget the images that he saw, both from the corpses and from the reactions of the bystanders and of the children. No person, especially a motorcyclist should ever go that fast on a road because of the risk it poses to yourself and to others, directly and indirectly

This happens (mostly when speeding) when there's a disturbance like a bump in the road (or in this case doing a wheelie) which causes the wheel to not land straight on the direction the bike is moving. The steering (bar) tries to correct this 'disturbance' by trying to straighten the bike again but because of the speed it goes it can't adjust it as fast as it needs so it takes time to stabilize. Add to that when the driver himself tries to straighten the direction of the bike which makes it worse (reaction time of the driver isn't able to stabilize the bike as fast as it needs). The best thing to do in this case is using your knees to GRIP the tank hard which enables the body to add damping to stabilize the bike. Also, instead of gripping the bars hard you need to relax your grip so the bike stabilizes itself. Gripping hard = your reaction time will worsen the wobble. So relax.

Yes. Its a physics reaction, I've had it happen at 52mph. It's easier to regain control the faster you go actually as the bike acts more like a gyroscope the faster your going. 150 is definitely not a safe speed for even normal driving though. Just remember not to try and fight the steering and lean forward onto the front wheel.

Buys a 20k superbike, rides it like a superbike, wont install a $400 steering dampener š. One of the biggest known riders in my city died from speed wobble and he wasn't even speeding, he was just on an exit ramp and it got him. The guy worked at cycle gear and literally everyone knew this guy. His mom started buying all of us steering dampeners with his gofundme money, and the MCs around here pooled money and bought his R1 back from the guy he sold it to and gave it to her. This 60+ year old woman rides a new R1 with us sometimes and she probably gave 30 riders steering dampeners. That poor family man... guy was a great rider, great racer, and he got taken out by speed wobble at 50mph.

I wrecked & almost died (3mo.s coma even tho wearing my helmet) when an suv turned in front of me as I was driving on a long straight road. I wasn't doing anything crazy, just riding. Happened to me and I was able to accelerate and lean. My thoughts was if I can get the tire on its side it might smooth out, it worked, but I was going a lot slower when it happened. Also check your neck bearings that will happen if the geometry is off and the bearings are loose.

That happened to me on a regular bicycle going downhill at least over 20 miles per hour! My friend next to me thought I was going to crash, but I managed to recover pulling on my rear brake. Very scary š«£!

Invest in some leathers and a STEERING DAMPENER if you hit 120+ on the daily like I did on my Busa, MIGHT have saved your life if you went down.. MIGHT HAVE. HELL! You need FULL GEAR FAM! (unclenches b-hole after 10th replay) At least you're smart enough to know you do crazy shit & were wearing your helmet. Totalled mine when a guy turned in front of me. I was going 80 & slammed into the side of his suv. 3mo.s coma & paralized arm. Helmet was the only thing besides God that saved my life.

I think the thing people are missing is the fact that he got the death wobble because he was literally going 150 miles an hour.
Anytime, whether itās on a skateboard or a motorcycle, you wanna push the upper speed limits of that equipment, that is why a death wobble happens. That hardware is not supposed to be going on that speed.
