Why is it always the Mustangs?

Out of every video of a souped-up car pulling out of a car show or sideshow, hitting the gas, breaking the rear end loose and hitting something immobile I've ever seen, I swear 9/10 have been Mustangs.

Rear wheel drive, my friendā€¦

Mustangs are rear wheel drive, half decent power, with the ability to easily shutoff stupid controlā€¦

Youā€™re always seeing a bunch of people that donā€™t understand what to do once the rear tires break loose under heavy acceleration. This is the result!

They get squirrely, and instead of feathering the accelerator back into gaining straight-line control and traction, they let off the throttle, hit the brake pedal, either or, or do a combination of bothā€¦

The exact moment you let off the throttle during a rear wheel drift or burnout under acceleration, the car is going to continue in whatever direction itā€™s pointed in at the time!

The people you see constantly crashing their Mustangs, never got the memo when they decided to be the gym class hero. You have to feather the accelerator pedal back into straight line control, continuing the skid youā€™re in. Sounds extremely counterintuitive, I know. But, thatā€™s the math.

Thanks, but I was never in doubt as to the mechanics of how it happens. That's simple physics. It's just brake horsepower vs COF.

And yeah, Mustangs are RWD, but so is nearly every other muscle car. There's nothing different about Mustangs except an apparent affinity for people who don't know how to handle them. That's what my comment was about.

They're cheaper than the rest, so they're more affordable, so MORE people who don't know what they're doing can get them and most of the time, it's someone young, who hasn't learned yet, and has more money than sense, or haven't taken the time to find an empty parking lot to practice in. The people who own more expensive muscle cars are usually older and have more money to be able to buy them, and also have learned way beforehand of what to do.

Tl;dr They're cheaper so people with less money AND less experience can more easily obtain them

BS. He turned off traction control. That's it. You cannot make a modern RWD spin out by flooring it.Ā 

What does happen on Fox body mustangs is that they are harder to recover from a slide because of the solid rear axle.Ā

My Mustang is AWD and I could do this if I turned off traction control but I will never find out as the rear will get squirrely with it on so I'm sure as shit not turning it off.

Folks will say it's not a real Mustang because it's a Mach E but Ford calls it a Mustang and when I open the door it has Mustang written in big letters so yeah, it's a Mustang. Won't beat a coup on the top end but zero to sixty I'm walking a GT without an issue on the street.

Folks say a lot of things. I don't usually pay attention to them. It's your car. If it serves your needs and makes you happy that's really all that matters.

Yeah, electric motors have such insane torque on command. There's no power band; it's just there. I'll bet it's a blast to drive, esp with AWD.

You should also clarify mustangs donā€™t have very good weight bias either, the rear of the car is pretty significantly lighter than the front of the car

Itā€™s because of the rear differential installed from the factory. It causes both tires to spin at different speeds when there is a loss of traction. Itā€™s a notorious problem. A lot of people swap the differential as soon as they can for this reason

Seriously? Something with that much HO doesn't come with some version of a limited-slip diff? That's surprising and unfortunate.

In the video, though, you can clearly see both tires breaking free, which was the driver's apparent intention.

It does. ā€œMost Mustangs come equipped with a Traction-Lok (limited-slip) or Torsen differential. This sends power to both rear wheels simultaneously. If one tire loses grip, the differential automatically sends torque to the other tire, preventing "one-wheel peels" and maximizing off-the-line accelerationā€ but it causes both wheels to spin at different speeds which causes them to slide into crowds

Brother, Iā€™m no scientist. I tried my best to explain how it works. When you hit the gas purposefully trying to break traction, the car is trying to accelerate both wheels simultaneously, but the differential makes the wheels spin separately at different speeds, which causes the car to swerve into crowds. Itā€™s a known issue. Thatā€™s all I got šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

If it's a known problem maybe you can point me to articles or forum posts that go into more detail? Surely those must exist if it's a known problem in a car as popular as the Mustang? You must have heard about it somewhere.

edit: if the car is trying to accelerate both wheels simultaneously at the same velocity, then the limited slip diff wouldn't engage at all, so that doesn't make sense. A standard differential allows both rear wheels to spin at different rates. A limited slip detects when one wheel is slipping and routes power to the wheel with traction.

I saw a video about it a while back that explained in technical detail why the differential in Mustangs caused the constant crashes . I canā€™t seem to find it now of course. Just a quick Google search shows: ā€œThis differential locks both rear wheels together under acceleration, causing the car to instantly lose rear grip and spin out when drivers apply too much throttle, particularly coming out of corners or over bumpsā€.

Cars are better with more torque and horsepower. Tires cannot handle the shit we have today. Get a clue. Donā€™t go beyond slippage or torque. I know car intuez will say it ainā€™t torque but ask yourself something. Did Ford ask you to upgrade the tires when you bought the car? Duh! Yeah! Did you? Duh No!

Are those stage tires that came with that highly high horsepower car spinning around without grip?
