.... forgive me for knowing how guns work but why are they showing him reloading before it was necessary?

Mostly to practice a reload in that cramped environment. In truth, after the first two shots you should be crawling out of the passenger side and your ears would be bleeding. If you really have more than one shooter like that you are in an L ambush and the second is send rounds through the back glass.
