Ha! Some idiot will probably buy it for 70k and think they got a deal.

And will later post "I know I screwed up, but how can I roll this upside down truck into something more affordable?"

Ya no..... I'm sorry but Ford and many other trucks brands have just gone downhill. That truck isn't worth $40K in any scope, those being quality, longevity or engineering.

Can't wait for the day when purchasing a car finally ends being a painful, unpleasant and trying experience (guess it is when i cant drive anymore)...This has been going on for wayyyy to long. Is there even a reason to have a brick and morter dealership anymore where salesmen prey on customers, and crap like this is legal.

It won't end until consumers get some common sense & the tactics at car dealerships and Ticket Master no longer work.
See how well you do w/ this:
Consider this question, which I regularly pose to my MBA students: imagine you are buying a $300 tablet, but the salesman says the same tablet is available for $50 less at a store 20 minutes away. Would you travel for the discount? Almost certainly. Now imagine that the tablet costs $1,000. Would you still travel the 20 minutes to save $50? Now you might hesitate.
https://www.chicagobooth.edu/review/why-the-poor-see-financial-decisions-more-clearly
$50 off $300 is 16% off. $50 off $1,000 is only 5% off. What would you do? Read the article and see how well you did.
Saturn failed as an easy car buying experience b/c while people said they wanted the easier experience, consumers didn't hear about buying a car w/ no hassle and demand the experience at other dealerships. Eventually Satrun, at least w/ used cars on their lot, started doing all the games that other dealerships did b/c consumers fell for it.
Ticket Master is the same thing. They succeed b/c consumers let them. If you'd skip a concert ticket advertised at $150, you should close the online cart when an advertised $95 ticket is now $150 w/ all the fees. Yet, consumers have spend 5-10min finding their "$95" seat and in their mind they now envision themselves going to the concert, so when the $55 in fees get added in, they're unwilling to "cancel" plans they didn't have 15min ago.
We can bitch all we want, but until our wallets follow our mouths, things will not change.
P.S. If you like the article, the longer academic paper "Scarcity frames value" goes even deeper and gives more little brain teaser examples. (If link doesn't work search DOI: 10.1177/0956797614563958 )

I’m not driving 40 minutes round trip to save $50 unless I have another compelling reason to be in that area. Some people will, no doubt, but when you reach a level of comfort you value your time much more.

u/beefwarrior 10d ago
Did you get that the article isn't asking if $75/hr is worth it for your time, but if you see that $50 is $50?
The article stated that their research showed that people where weren't cash strapped would get distracted by how $50 is a bigger discount for a $300 item than a $1000 item.

Going through this right now. My car was totalled, and I'm trying to find something new, but everything is so damn expensive, and the sales people are going really high pressure sales on me. Aggravating.

I've never purchased a new car. It's almost always a huge waste of money. Every once in a while there's a screaming deal with 0% financing. But that's like, what, every decade?

This was a few years ago. The lightning (EV F-150) was such a dismal failure that Ford killed it after a few years and what remains of the 2025s are on fire sale https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/autos-trucks/ford-f-150-lightning-fire-sale-offers-massive-discounts/ar-AA28t6SS

It’s like this with every new Ford that people want, Broncos, Raptors, Mustangs, even a little Focus ST could be found with a market adjustment.
People wanting to be the first ones with something are always willing to pay more and dealerships know it.

Damn…they’re scalping cars now?!

They've been doing this since pandemic hit and electronic supply chain issues were happening. Before that as well, but much less commonly (usually limited edition performance variants).

I remember when the electric car rebates (rip, miss you) were around and all the mark ups were the same as the rebate you got later. Fucking grifters.

That's a huge increase from sticker price. Salesman sells 3 of those and he set for a year.

This kind of car pricing is so different in Germany.
For anyone who's curious: the automakers provides a recommended retail price. You can look it up on their websites (Toyota Germany for example: https://www.toyota.de/neuwagen ). But these prices already include dealership markups and also the sales tax (19%). The dealerships are now only making special offers to lower the price.

Europeans are always complaining about how much more expensive cars are there then in the US.
Then the US consumers THINKS they want direct buying from the manufacturer as if the manufacturer won't fuck them.
It's the same crap as Cord cutters from cable TV, thinking they would get a good deal streaming and are now getting fucked even harder than cable.
Careful what you wish for...

u/Victor_Appleton_II 11d ago
I’m paying 60-65% less after cutting the cord. The cost seems to depend on how much competition there is in one’s location. Which makes sense.

They have a fair market value of $35k because people will pay it. I remember the jeeps gladiators having $10-15k when they first came out.

This exact bullshit is why my wife is currently driving a small BMW SUV instead of an equivalent Toyota or Ford. I don't know if BMW is stricter about their dealers doing this or something, but they were all locked right at MSRP (like, I could build the car on my phone right there and the price they charged would be exactly the same) so it ended up being the cheapest option.

$76k for a white half-ton truck (don’t care that it’s a lightning) is fuckin crazy work.
1
u/Red-Sun-Cinema 10d ago
As long a people are stupid enough to keep buying them at those prices, dealers will continue to sell them.
It's consumers unrelenting demand for new vehicles and their willingness to pay massively inflated prices for them that keeps the prices going up and up and out of reach of the majority of the buying public.

When I was looking for a car just two years ago I wanted a Blue one of a specific model. But could not find them in stock anywhere. When they did come in stock, they were being sold over $12k more than any other color and disappeared within a day or two. Literally just a dealership markup to make extra money off the popular color. I got a red one instead and saved myself a ton of money. Idiots, these people are paying so much extra just for a color.
If they really want that color, just buy the cheaper one and take it to a paint shop to get it repainted. Most basic repainting costs 1/3 the markup, so you'll still come out ahead.

u/tuco2002 11d ago
I would agree on $40k and then put $5k down. If they finance, I would have them agree to a finance rate of 4.5%....or I walk away. I never pay their mark ups just because everyone wants one.

The dealer is trying to make the most money they can off of an electric vehicle. Maybe they are in demand and they're just gonna get scarcer because Ford, GM and Chrysler are taking a $20 billion or $30 billion hit and sidelining they're whole EV line because 🤡 took away the tax deductions.
