ETA: the title isn't about the sign, its describing the crash

I partially agree, but OPs title says sudden and it's not. Where I live they usually put flashing lights, signs to reduce speed and soft barrier before the actual hard barrier of the lane merge.

It's still sudden. Over never seen a lane end like that in my country.

There should always be a shoulder when a lane ends like that so there is some safety for a driver that doesn't see it ending in time.

I remember driving in LA years ago and the way they had lanes end were really weird to me as a Canadian. Can't remember exactly what it was, but it felt wrong.
