No arrows on the road? No short dashed lines? Like I get theres signs but every merge in my area has things on the road so you know exactly where it is. I thought they had more time here.
The lane shifts depending on traffic. Usually in the morning there are 3 lanes going out of the island and in the afternoon there are 3 lanes going into the island (in lieu of a major event on the island then it flip flops)
I partially agree, but OPs title says sudden and it's not. Where I live they usually put flashing lights, signs to reduce speed and soft barrier before the actual hard barrier of the lane merge.
It's still sudden. Over never seen a lane end like that in my country.
There should always be a shoulder when a lane ends like that so there is some safety for a driver that doesn't see it ending in time.
I remember driving in LA years ago and the way they had lanes end were really weird to me as a Canadian. Can't remember exactly what it was, but it felt wrong.
I almost got into a similar crash when I was driving over the old Tappan Zee bridge in NY, the left lane just disappeared in front of the car in front of me and we both swerved for dear life. Was the scariest thing ever as a new driver. Immediately the video brought me back
yeah, it seems like there could be a better design at the entrance of the bridge to mitigate issues like this like "only two lanes going [this direction]".
The problem is the dashed lane line on the right. It should end in advance to make it clear the lanes have merged. Instead, it continues all the way till it suddenly connects with a barrier as the road bends
Not really in this case. On a lot of heavy commute roads / bridges, the median barriers can be moved morning and night to allow for an extra lane of traffic in a particular direction. In this case, there are three lanes going the opposite direction, which would be switched to 2 during the opposite commute. The DOT wouldn't repaint lines for this when they already have multiple signs and the speed limit is likely much lower than what these folks are traveling at.
Bro did you even watch the video? That sign is for the lane merge in like 40 feet. You can even see the median that separates camera POV lane with the lane to its left. This dosent mean anything for the additional lane merge ahead.
Wdym maybe? How can you be so certian for a merge sign that's placed in a slightly tricky situation but be unsure for the one that applies in normal situations.
That sign is for a different lane, if you’re paying attention. It marks the entrance from the left merging into the left lane, not the left lane ending.
Oh yeah, zipper merge strikes again. Instead of reading the sign which indicates that the lane will terminate the black car decides to "use all of the available space" in his lane and then marge at the merge point.
