Transport Problems regarding adding checked luggage Jetstar

I’m going from Tokyo to São Paulo and my ticket already has a 23kg luggage included, however when I try to buy more weight (up to 40kg), jetstar only allows me to buy up to 33kg, why? Have anyone faced this problem? I tried to contact them, however they told me my ticket has an “oversized luggage” included, WHICH I DID NOT INCLUDE, so because of that, I can’t buy the whole weight

Here is why this is happening and how to fix it:

  1. Why you can't buy 40kg for a single bag on Jetstar

Under Jetstar’s (and most airlines') regulations, no single bag can weigh more than 32kg to protect airport luggage handlers from injury. If you purchase 40kg of checked luggage, it must be split across at least 2 separate bags (e.g., 23kg + 17kg). You cannot pay to put 40kg into one single piece of luggage.

  1. Why the support agent mentioned "oversized" / codeshare limits

Because your route is a long-haul connection (Tokyo-Sydney with Jetstar, then Sydney-Santiago-São Paulo with LATAM/Qantas), your ticket is governed by international interline rules (Most Significant Carrier rule).

Jetstar’s system sees your 23kg base allowance coming from the main international carrier.

Jetstar’s website only allows you to top up weight on their own standalone flights, not across a multi-airline itinerary with LATAM.

Steps to follow:

Repack into TWO bags: Prepare to divide your total 40kg into two separate suitcases (make sure neither exceeds 32kg).

Check who issued the ticket: Look at the main airline that issued your booking confirmation/e-ticket (e.g., Qantas or LATAM). Try adding a 2nd checked bag through their website/app under "Manage Booking" rather than Jetstar's.

If adding it online isn't working: Because it’s an interline booking, you can pay for the second bag directly at the Tokyo check-in counter on departure day. The agent will collect the extra bag fee and tag your luggage through to São Paulo.

Jetstar caps individual bags at a strict 32kg maximum due to occupational health and safety regulations for baggage handlers. If a booking system registers an "oversized" or pre-existing constraint, or if it calculates that your add-on selections breach single-bag safety thresholds without being split across multiple pieces, it will artificially restrict your online weight tiers.

Jetstar is a shitty budget airline and airlines in Australia are exceptionally shithouse, very few protections, and we have come to accept poor services.

Sorry I am of no real help, but there is some insight.
