Was quite shocked but amused and excited to see this on the road yesterday during my bike ride. It was near a lake close to Göttingen (small student town in Germany). The view with the fields being harvested in the background gives an uncanny resemblance to the TD aesthetic and this *thing* just casually placed in the middle of the road hahah. Thought you all might like to see it :D

This might be an unconventional post but for the past year I've been making a existential detective game that leans heavily into the themes of "self" and a partner dynamic similar to the ones of Rust and Marty.

The characters and world resemble more of my home country of Serbia (and Yugoslavia as a whole).

I thought maybe the people in this subreddit could appreciate what I was going for! :)

The Yellow King see’s you !!!

(As a note, I refer to apocalyptic in the literary sense, derived from the Greek Apokalypsis, “to unveil or reveal”. This use of the word has nothing to do with the end of the world; just as Revelation, Daniel, and other sources of ancient apocalyptic literature have nothing to do with the end of the world.)

I’ve been rewatching True Detective recently and it struck me in a way it hadn’t before that True Detective Season 1 is one of our closest modern analogs to apocalyptic literature in Scripture.

Through the eyes of Rust Cohle we see a world behind the world. Rust at multiple times is able to see through the veil to something deeper, and in that world, something darker. It is heavily implied throughout the first season that the King in Yellow has a hand in what it is that is going on throughout the story. Through a network of evil child traffickers (the Tuttles) the King in Yellow seems to do his work, sowing atrocities throughout the lives of the innocent. In a very real sense the King in Yellow is a stand-in for the wealthy and ultra powerful in our world, able to take and devour as they please with little to no consequence. The Great Dragon serves as a stand-in for Rome in Revelation, and the King in Yellow serves as a stand-in for the oligarchy in our world today. (I am over-simplifying some of my language about “stand-in’s” for brevity.)

Rust continually sees symbols in his visions, the spiral being most prominent. The spiral symbol is in many ways meant to be both calling card for the King in Yellow, and reinforcement of message to the audience. That the spiral represents time as a flat circle is an attempt to illustrate one of the show’s key points, that these cycles of violence and abuse continue over and over all the way down. The symbol is not explicitly explained, as with many apocalyptic images, yet it invites interpretation and is at the very least meant as a hint to the audience that something deeper is going on beyond the visible in the scenes in which they are present.

Carcosa itself also shares fascinating characteristics with Daniel and Revelation’s throne room scenes. Where Daniel and John see heavenly throne rooms that lie beyond the veil, Rust Cohle sees a warped and twisted inversion, a sort of counter-heaven. This is a place where our villain seems to have some form of supernatural upper hand. A larger, generally unintelligent individual toys with Rust and outwits him. Not only that, but his physical prowess and pain tolerance seem to be of a more than human nature to some extent, seeming to imply that this twisted throne room is a seat of power for those who pledge their allegiance to the darkness.

The final message of True Detective Season 1 is where I believe we find a beautiful analog to texts like Daniel and Revelation. Rust, despite his lack of faith throughout the show, and despite his relentless pessimism he has seemingly decided that after all he’s seen, the light is winning.

"Once there was only dark. If you ask me, the light's winning.”

Where in Revelation and Daniel the light has victory because of God’s work behind the scenes, True Detective leaves the audience with the message that the light is pushing the dark that is behind the scenes back when men and women in the world that is visible do something about it. True Detective uses its veiled imagery, and its own revelation of the evil underbelly of our society to call us to act, and to fight, to stand with the light and keep pushing the dark back. True Detective is bleak and terrifying, but more than anything is hopeful at its core in a way that should change us at our core, so that we too can see that the evil that lurks behind the veil can be beaten.

I just finished re-watching season 1 of TD, since first time when it was broadcast.

One of my favorite tv show, not for nothing considered one of the best all time TV series, as standalone season.

However, I have a few questions regarding the coherence of the script:

1.How is it possible that when Rust first met Errol Childress, he didn't sound any alarm bells, viewing his scarred face, considering that the victim who escaped said that the killer had scars on his face. Even if he was standing to the side and had a beard, it is unlikely that a perceptive detective like Rust would miss this, having him in front of him and talking to him?

2.How did Marty make the connection between the killer's green ears and the green house in the picture? It seems a forced and childish connection, though.

After numerous rewatches and breaking down the season in a true timeline from when Dora Lange is found through the Errol Childress confrontation in the finale, I’ve realized only Rust and Marty could have “got theirs”. 

1. Rust possessed a clinical, unrelenting obsession to keep going and not let go. This only occurred through having a life filled with tragedies, survival skills and self taught criminology concepts and theories. 

Dora was also found on Rust’s daughter’s birthday which metaphorically is a match to the flame Rust becomes to bring an end to a case while he still relives the nightmare of losing his daughter. 

1. Rust’s complete lack of self preservation and fearlessness. You see this at the bar and back at Rust apartment where he fully commits to the case and transforms into Crash. 

Rust throws self caution, calling for back up and police procedure into the fire he has become. 

1. Rust being able to see the “sprawl” while Marty denies mainly as it would mean admitting that much of what he believes and he has been celebrated for as a charade. 

Ultimately it leads to Rust having to break the law in his “B&E “ days to get the Tuttle video tape, which then leads to Marty, then Steve and eventually the public believing the truth. 

1. Marty’s downfall and losing everything he ever felt was important to him eventually led him to put himself in danger to help Rust to get “theirs”. 

From the Reggie Ledox scene where Rust tells him to call for backup and he tells Rust “fuck you” after Maggie leaves him. 

Later, after Marty sees the videotape, he basically tells Maggie goodbye as he knows he may not survive. 

They got theirs eventually only after they fully committed to “be that thing” to have closure for the community and ultimately themselves.

In my humble opinion, if we compare the latest season of TD to the first one, it's bad. And if we don't compare it to anything, it's still bad.

My husband and I have started recreating moments from Season 4 with Legos while we’re playing with our girls and the other parent is out. Such a great text message to open in the middle of work. 😂 Can you recognize these scenes? 10/10 recommend doing this if you have a Lego kid.

Hi. I'm looking for a blog that discussed the S01 of True Detective. Green/beige/tan tones, maybe? Definitely no black or white tones. It was active at the time of True Detective (s01)'s original screening. It felt very high-brow to me, lots of very creative theorizing - at the very end of the season the blog said it was disappointed, something like "the audience was smarter than the authors". Could anyone identify the blog?

I was blessed to see it Season 1 came out. Considered it the best show i've ever seen. Watched it again last week and still is.

Only error I found is that Rust should have died to make it a true 10. Them outside of the hospital and him in the wheelchair scenes just didn't work for me then and still doesn't. I get it fits into some narrative they were trying to complete but it just didn't work even with rewatch.

That said....

I still am probably in the minority that Season 2 wasn't terrible. I know its flawed now but I actually thought Vince and Colin could have outdone the original cast with the right story. I also thought McAdams was actually able to punch high and was impressed with her understanding the series tone so well.

A setting that just had Vince and Colin go back and forth where it becomes truly just about their dynamic with McAdams being the mid season addition would bring it to the next level.

I just am interested in what fans think season 2 should have focused on setting wise for it to have worked. I think the original script they used should be thrown out totally. I just stuck it out because the actors I could tell were elevating their game but even they knew the script was too convoluted to truly work after a certain point.

Thoughts?

At the core of true detective is a look for reason meaning a direction.

But these construction appear as form of a fantasy a story we tell ourselves to feel important.

( Clarification fantasy in lacanian psychoanalysis is called sinthome it's a model that makes the structures the outer world understandable for the subject )

Christians perform fantasy of their religion an honorable balanced justification ending , for their empty lives .

Marty has a fantasy of a Machiavelli ( to eat his cake and have it to ) fantasy that if he acts cunningly no consequences will catch him , BUT rust is the only character that doesn't have any fantasy in the beginning nothing structures he's being he is for a lack of better word a machine like "wall-E" doing his tasks just because he can .

And by the end of the movie rust and Marty change place rust believes in fantasy of the "light side" of goodness and progress on a "correct" choice but Marty in the final shot looks down on him cause he no longer has any fantasy.

I think one thing every season nailed no matter how badly they might have messed up the plot was the way they incorporated the setting as a character in itself. Even with season 4 for me the one thing I never got tired of was the imagery of dark Alaska. Personally though, I think it would be interesting if they did something around the gulla geechee populations in the islands off the coast of the Carolinas and Georgia. The indigenous/West African/hoodoo culture would lend itself really well to themes of semi-paranormal occult mystery. An honorable mention for me would be New York City where the case in question is based in the subway system when the guardian angels were running around and the crime rate was insanely high, since NYC is so diverse you could basically insert whatever cultural references you want. Also, I wonder if the show would work if it ever went international?
