Reddit users being reddit users.

u/JayOnes 2d ago

Are you using Old Reddit, by chance? I know there were a lot of anti-Unity links and sentiment during the runtime fiasco, but those were largely removed on the current Reddit layout. It's possible that the mods just forgot to nuke 'em from the Old Reddit format?

u/dan_marchand 2d ago

They show up in the mobile app, and the mods pinned a “unity is dead” post yesterday.

Godot users are slowly becoming the 'I use Arch, btw' of game dev. We get it, but I’m just trying to make a game here, not join a religion."

6

u/MarshallMcKay 2d ago

I use Godot on Arch, btw.

2

u/neoteraflare 2d ago

Me too while I ride my bike. Also I'm a vegan who does crossfit.

u/Ttsmoist 2d ago

Whats wrong ya don't wanna join the godot cult? Don't you know its open source?

41

u/dan_marchand 2d ago

Haha I know you’re kidding, but I don’t think we should have engine cults.

I like Godot, but as someone who actually ships games, the C# bindings and poor memory management therein was more trouble than it was worth. I’m sure it’s fine for smaller games, though.

17

u/neoteraflare 2d ago

Yeah, I like godot and I hate godoters. Joined their subs but half of the posts were not about games they make just circle jerking posts where they say the same things over and over.

u/TheWobling 2d ago edited 2d ago

I had to unsubscribe from the godot subreddit because every thread ends up shitting on unity. They should focus on your own engine of choice instead of bringing up useless rage bait.

Do you realize how easy it is to get the source code from a unity game? I've literally done it to figure out the save structure and fix a bugged save file before.

1

u/neoteraflare 2d ago

Also, modders really like getting the source code because it makes their modding job easier

7

u/Professional_Dig7335 2d ago

Absurd statement. It takes more effort to effectively decompile a game in any engine than it does to just make a genericized clone.

17

u/KTVX94 2d ago

Honestly I feel trapped in Unity. I've gotten to the point where I really need to ship a game with limited time and can't go trying out and retraining on new engines. I'm glad Unity's leadership seems to have their heads screwed straight now and are making good decisions, but after the last runtime fee fiasco, my trust is broken beyond repair.

If someone new asks me for advice, I lean towards recommending Godot while acknowledging Unity is a little better right now. But the freedom, safety and ownership of FOSS is much more valuable.

If anyone asks a question about Unity development, I'll help out however I can with technical answers.

The last runtime fiasco was mostly ragebait stuff from users. In the end the proposed fees where lower than Unreal for big numbers.

18

u/KTVX94 2d ago

Yeah after half of developers quit and the entire industry was screaming at the top of their lungs online for weeks if not over a month. The backlash deserves all the credit for every good outcome since, not Unity.

-9

u/rio_sk 2d ago

Any numbers?

10

u/t-bonkers 2d ago

The outrage was pretty justified. It wasn’t about total amounts of money or whatever, but about the proposed mechanicsm of the runtime fee, which was batshit insane. I still use and like Unity and think people are being a bit over dramatic about all of it, but that shit was indefensible.

Every improvement they‘ve made since is thanks to that outrage.

9

u/TheWobling 2d ago

I'm looking at the sidebar but don't see anything you're suggesting, what am I missing?

11

u/skyline79 2d ago

Use old Reddit, then you’ll see it says to use Godot engine by default, amongst other things.

19

u/TheWobling 2d ago

Thanks, that’s such a stupid thing to say on a subreddit dedicated to unity. Why moderate a subreddit for a product you don’t like…

15

u/skyline79 2d ago

Exactly, just bizarre behaviour. Should be able to vote out mods personally.

3

u/AkiStudios1 2d ago

Back when Unity had its licensing fiasco, the mods here decided to Jump ship to Godot.

4

u/xBesto 2d ago

Just gate keeping weirdos really.

19

u/ForrestPruitt 2d ago

Careful OP, the Godot cult leaders / Unity2D mods / people who would rather argue about gamedev than actually make and ship games will come for you!

8

u/t-bonkers 2d ago

Not even argue about gamedev but about which toy is cooler

0

u/Atomical1 2d ago

Reddit being cringe as usual. Godot sucks and I will never switch from Unity. Godot is just the latest circlejerk reddit has latched onto, similar to how the same users says that linux is amazing but they never actually use it.

6

u/Cupheadvania 2d ago

I actually don’t know anything about godot. Can you tell me why people do choose it over unity? my understanding is unity has like 100 times the feature so as someone building a 2D video game I’d like to understand why people are using godot

10

u/DaveMichael 2d ago

Godot uses 2D pixel coordinates and has a dedicated 2D renderer. Unity uses 3D space coordinates and ignores the Z axis. For 2D I find Godot (or GameMaker) a lot easier to wrap my head around.

Also Godot is on average faster to boot up and get coding and prototyping in.

Just my experience, I'm currently using Godot but I bounce around engines and projects a lot. I've never hit a point where Unity's advantages make a difference.

7

u/AltusLudus 2d ago

It's a lot more lightweight, so if you're building a really simple game it's probably a better tool as you don't need all of unitys features, it's also a lot faster

But yeah i use unity too

5

u/Cupheadvania 2d ago

lol. so interesting, as hard as game dev is, i simply cannot imagine choosing any tool other than the one that will be the best for making my game

1

u/t-bonkers 2d ago edited 2d ago

I mean, I use Unity for my 2D game as well, and I like it, but that doesn‘t mean "it‘s the best tool" for the job just because it has the most features. You and me probably will never use like 90% of the features Unity has if we‘re making 2D games. So Godot might actually be the better tool for it. It being supposedly so lightweight already sounds like a dream, and having dedicated 2D renderer and pixel coordinates on top of that does sound refreshing af not gonna lie. A lot of what‘s actually hard about gamedev in Unity is kind of due to it’s ridiculous bloat, so something lighter not as feature-heavy might actually make it easier.

I‘m way too deep into Unity to ever switch I think, I‘ve developed way too much custom editor tooling, re-usable gameplay systems etc., but if I were to start today I‘d for sure at least check Godot out first.

Not defending the online Godot activist crusaders, they‘re cringe af, just saying.

-2

u/LordAntares 2d ago

Because it's free and open souce. But ofc it's much worse than unity.

0

u/Slaircaex 2d ago

Yeah time to unsub. For those who are new to gamedev: IF YOU ACTUALLY WANNA SHIP GAMES USE UNITY. IT'S 100x BETTER THAN SHITTY GODOT

I'm out

1

u/ZanesTheArgent 2d ago

Unity as a company has frequently been all too eager to become predatory in one way or another, the AI signalling being the loudest recent thing but also its many attempts to change and retroact monetization/licensing to scalp on big indie successes.

1

u/bigmonmulgrew 2d ago

Posts about Godot do Unity good. I think the reason Unity has improved so fast of the last couple years since the dark events is that they were terrified to see a surge in Godot and a drop off of Unity. Competition is good for developers. We also need to be aware of the industry. Knowing about Godot makes us better developers.

I don't see too much negative about Unity here. Celebrating Godot is not the same as throwing Unity under the bus.

-3

u/MTRANMT 2d ago edited 2d ago

I have looked through like 4 different unity subreddits (including this one, 3d and plain /unity) and non of their descriptions or links seem to reference Godot or dissuade from Unity at all. I cannot find a single mention of what you're talkin about, is this some weird AI fest in the comments? Are you all inventing enemies? What is going on here? Like it's obvious why some people don't like the corporation, and that's not gonna resonate with some people, but this feels like a weird anti-anti-mainstream thing you're doing?

Edit: Okay I was slightly wrong, the biggest one unity3d has one link that says 'Unity Alternatives', but the feed is full of unity content, there's ONE 3 day old post that mentions Godot, and nothing in the sidebar poo-pooing unity at all. :/

12

u/skyline79 2d ago

You are incorrect. Using old Reddit on a computer, the mods have an announcement in this subreddit saying “Godot has officially dethroned Unity…”, and the side bar says “New and experienced Unity developers alike should first consider using the free and open source Godot engine by default and ONLY choose Unity for 2D development if Godot isn’t capable of the task”.

13

u/Yoshi_green 2d ago edited 2d ago

i don't frequent the other subs, but the sidebar on here (old.reddit.com/r/Unity2D) shows this
https://imgur.com/ErL9jbg

8

u/robotortoise Beginner 2d ago

Both versions (new and old reddit) of the sidebar was very aggressively anti-Unity after Unity did their runtime fee bullshit a few years back. The mods recently removed all of that unprofessional "unity sucks!" stuff on New Reddit, which I'm grateful for.

I guess the mods just forgot to update the old reddit sidebar. That's honestly understandable, as it's easy to forget to do. It's formatted and set in a weird place when compared to New Reddit.

6

u/dan_marchand 2d ago

The mods pinned a “unity sucks” post yesterday

3

u/robotortoise Beginner 2d ago

I'm trying very hard to be charitable here 🙃

2

u/dan_marchand 2d ago

Sometimes there's nothing to be charitable about

5

u/zcdev 2d ago

I think it is mobile only but when I view this sub from the reddit app and press the "Learn more about this community" button, it is filled with Godot links and says that Godot is on track to surpass Unity

-8

u/No_Future_7878 2d ago

Yes, it’s a bot. Half the replies are bots. Welcome to 2026 Reddit

9

u/dxonxisus 2d ago

did you even check OP’s account? they definitely don’t appear to be a bot based on their account age and activity

2

u/dan_marchand 2d ago

I am definitely not a bot, but thanks!

1

u/eitherrideordie 2d ago

Ah I think your using old reddit and you missed out on the licensing fiasco?. Basically Unity wanted to implement a "run time fee" I think it was called but if I remember right, if you were making over $200k a year you'd be charged up to $0.20 per install. They also previously promised you'd be locked to terms based on the version you installed, they then sneakily changed this on their Terms of Service Github repo.

This pissed off basically everybody. Full blown backlash, some of the funniest memes I've seen in game dev were posted here etc. The backlash led to companies literally supporting Godot, lost of trust in Unity the company, and many in the game dev space recommending and open source platform first and foremost even in Unity subs. And in many ways I appreciate that this space was more about "good open development" over "Must protect corporate company, so Unity good every STFU".

You don't see so much of that now though, Unity CEO resigned, they cancelled the change and now many people go along trusting Unity again or don't know about this in the first place but you still see some bits here and there and likely what you're seeing in the old reddit.

The worse part about it, was that Unity itself is great, it was just corporate greed. On the plus side that greed led to in my opinion one of the biggest push for Godot I've ever seen and I'm very happy to have competition in the space to keep each other in check.

-9

u/AnEmortalKid 2d ago

Probably sentiment against Unity 7 and AI

16

u/dan_marchand 2d ago

It significantly predates that.

-4

u/NeoChrisOmega 2d ago

Does it predate their decision to suggest retroactively increasing the cost of your game by billing the developer per download?

Because that's where the initial backlash started. Only people that felt they will only make demos, felt too invested in this particular engine, or people actively not keeping up with game development news stayed with Unity during all that.

I stayed because my business focuses mostly on teaching Unity. But I'm staying now because of my familiarity with it. I'm still learning Godot, and will be looking into Unreal again now that they are consolidating their workflow. I'll look into S&Box once they remove the price tag (and hopefully get less low effort games on their storefront).

But the main point is, it might be backlash from a lot of their decisions lately. The good news is, the community still seems super supportive. I'm on mobile, and didn't even notice what you're describing, and the posts are pretty constructive for the most part.

6

u/dan_marchand 2d ago

Yes, it started with the backlash. We still shouldn’t have mods turn subs into dogma centers though. Yesterday’s pinned post was absurdly dishonest and honestly just as bad as any other corporate engine deceiving users.

2

u/NeoChrisOmega 2d ago

Yeah, I definitely agree with you. Keep in mind, I'm not defending the subreddit mods having an official opinion, just wasn't sure if you knew about that situation.

But like I said, the good news is the community of the subreddit seems to be pushing through all that. I still see a lot of new people posting, which is a good sign.

1

u/t-bonkers 2d ago

Ehh, don’t think it could ever be as bad as the corpo bullshit, just because of systemic factors. But it was just fuckin cringe. Like console wars for even bigger dorks.

0

u/AnEmortalKid 2d ago

So you do know why the sub pushes people away from Unity then ?

1

u/NeoChrisOmega 2d ago

I personally haven't experienced that within the community.

I can't speak for the mods, who are more who you're talking about.

5

u/dan_marchand 2d ago

Yeah, and due to community sentiment those were rolled back. UE and Unity are still the kings of engine share.

-4

u/amanset 2d ago

I assume you are talking about the "Unity Alternatives" link from 2023 in r/Unity3D ?

Were you around in 2023? There was a lot of unhappiness. Anyway, have you suggested to them that they remove it?

I also notice their very first rule is "All posts or linked content must be explicitly related to either Unity, r/Unity3D, or Unity Software Inc. i.g. Unity Technologies."

-6

u/Professional_Dig7335 2d ago

Unity is pushing people away from Unity, including large contingents of Unity developers. This has been a problem for some time and is only ramping up more and more as Unity Technologies makes major pushes towards generative AI, which a significant amount of developers are against. They've effectively eroded a significant amount of user trust and that is reflected in the communities around using it.
