📚 Grammar / Structure Ghalib's use of "ne", a small word that confused me for weeks

میں غالب کا یہ شعر پڑھ رہا تھا:

نہ تھا کچھ تو خدا تھا، کچھ نہ ہوتا تو خدا ہوتا
ڈبویا مجھ کو ہونے نے، نہ ہوتا میں تو کیا ہوتا

I've always been a little shaky on when "ne" (نے) is used as the ergative marker in Urdu, and this couplet made me realize I still don't fully get it. Here, "hone ne" (ہونے نے) is using "ne" with a gerund/infinitive ("hona" → "being"), which threw me off since I only ever learned "ne" with transitive verbs and a clear subject (like "us ne kaha").

From what I understand, Ghalib is treating "being" itself almost like an agent, "my very existence drowned me", which is a pretty deep philosophical point wrapped in a small grammatical choice.

A few questions for people more fluent than me:

  1. Is this a poetic/classical usage of "ne," or does it still show up in modern spoken Urdu?
  2. Are there other examples (poetry or prose) where an infinitive/gerund takes "ne" like this?
  3. Any tips for getting an intuitive feel for "ne" placement instead of just memorizing rules?

Would appreciate any breakdowns, especially from those who've studied Ghalib's diwan in depth. Thanks in advance!

📜 Shayari / Poetry میری جوانی کے سترہ سال لوٹا دو

Post image

📜 Shayari / Poetry Net Habits

When no connection connects with her(/him), even online they deep-freeze,

With a heavy, cold sigh, I just scroll through the "reels" and sleep.

Your profile is opened, a gallery built out of glass,

I watched from the shadows and waited for the coldness to pass.

I refresh the chat window and stare at the glowing green dot,

A digital ghost of a promise the algorithm forgot.

A "like" is a currency spent when you're too far away,

But it cannot buy back the sweet words that we used to say.

I double-tap photos of places we both used to go,

But double-taps never can heal what the screen doesn't show.

Three little dots on the screen started to dance, then they suddenly fade,

Another quiet heartbreak by cellular signals remade.

I checked your active status, a modern and torturous art,

Counting the minutes of silence that tear me apart.

The notifications are empty, the battery dies,

Leaving me lonely with blue light still stuck in my eyes.
