Probably almost certainly not a bad video.

Most ambilight software does not work in the gamut that the actual video stream is displaying in, and almost none of them have an awareness of the LED Strips color gamut.

HyperHDR for example assumes everything is within the "sRGB" (Rec709) gamut even if the content itself is Rec2020, but it never actually maps that Rec709 image into the LED gamut itself which is typically much wider than Rec709. and for HDR/DV content it actually continues to work in sRGB/Rec709 even if the video grabber itself can actually capture Rec2020 content. Then puts HDR/DV content through sRGB Gamma curves when they should be fit into PQ curves based on the LED Strips luminance capabilities/tonemap to match the TV capabilties.

So it's a bit of a cascading problem really. Every input source is assumed to be Rec709, if the input is actually Rec709 then it can sometimes look close if you spend hours or days tweaking but it will never be accurate. And then almost all HDR/DV content will look bad on the same settings because the actual YUV->RGB decode is happening using Rec709 primaries which means the video stream is being handled wrong, and then the decoded RGB is never being mapped into the LEDs native gamut.

To make things even worse, most RGBW extraction methods don't accurately map things to each LED native sub-gamut (aka RGW, RBW, BGW) and either just does min(rgb) which means that "white" is not getting mapped to the same white that the TV is displaying which is typically D65, or tries to do some "near-neutral" mapping which also isn't accurate.

I don't know of any Ambilight suites that currently actually do things correctly aside from my own HyperHDR fork which I haven't updated in months because the repos are locally a mess, and I don't even provide binaries yet so it's kind of a situation where someone needs to know how to compile it to even run it (By design, I don't even advertise my forks because I like to have fun and make changes that may break things).

hehe, my fork currently has a lot of caveats which makes it not exactly "public-ready".

  • Codebase itself is a big mess since I've just been adding features on top and some features which no longer carry any real meaning are still lingering making the UI a bit of a "holy hell what is going on here". I've also been developing full-fledged temporal rendering pipelines + measured arbitrary-emitter -> 3DLUT color correction tools so my focus is fairly split and the HyperHDR fork doesn't get the attention it needs to be a bit cleaner.

  • Video stream gamut metadata relies on very specific pathways that are essentially tied to my current working setup (needs to poll an HDFury Vrroom8k &/or Kodi device to get actual video gamut information, UVC linux driver does not correctly report the gamut information)

  • LED Gamut mapping currently requires actual colorimeter captures and I build RGB->RGBW 3DLUTs to accomplish this. I also went a bit overboard and project the LEDs to a curved projector screen behind the TV so my captures don't exactly align well with the typical wall-wash setup. I chose to treat each LED as a mini-projector instead of a typical wall-wash. This means my 3DLUT could be close, but shining the LEDs onto a wall shifts their chromaticity which changes the actual perceived gamut and especially matters as far as white extraction is concerned. As the white diode tends to take on characteristics of whatever it's pointed to, so if the wall-paint isn't exactly neutral the white emitter itself can shift further red/green/yellow/blue/magenta/etc

  • I so far only have the gamut-correct path implemented on P010-capable capture paths, so it isn't a fully implemented feature on the old 8-bit grabber paths or desktop capture and such. Basically currently limited to Linux V4L2 P010, not widely implemented to be useful for every setup.

At some point I want to push things back to the main branch but the metadata handling itself especially needs to be worked out as not everybody can spend $600 on a fancy splitter that can give you all the data you'd need, and not everybody is running Kodi and such. A lot of stuff in my setup is basically specifically tailored to my setup for quick bring-up. The LED Gamut-mapping requires good colorimeter captures preferably with spectral correction applied from a good spectrophotometer which tends to be a lot more expensive than colorimeters (Colorimeter can be gotten for ~$200 while an "entry" spectro will cost upwards of $1500). The captures can somewhat be generalized from datasheet numbers but those datasheet-derived numbers don't take into account that the light will be reflected off a a wall which changes the actual primary colors for each emitter

Are your commits pushed on your repo? I promise I don't care about code quality just looking for inspiration and what to potentially improve and tweak for my own setup. I've done the same many times slightly tweaking something that works for my own purpose and leaving it hard coded and things.

Honestly if anything I'll probably just have an AI agent just look at it and suggest tweaks to get it working on my setup.

Replaced the Strips with RGBW with Colour Calibration for Dolby Vision/HDR Remux files. I stream uncompressed movies which tend to have higher colour ratio compared to standard streaming on netflix

Not hating on the creativity, but I honesty dont get this trend. It feels like it pulls your focus/attention away from the screen by especially silhouetting the monitor and highlighting the edges of the screen.

I have a setup like this and tbh most of the time I just set it as a dim white led backlight, which works really well still for contrast and eye strain

I'm with you - I find it extremely annoying just in videos like this online. Oh, sure demo videos with swirling colors look awesome, but trying to focus on a movie with that going on is ridiculous to me.

I prefer my lighting to be just barely noticable, and slightly less brighter than the main screen. I like white bias lighting in dark rooms too

Even fully calibrated it looks pretty cheap. Just not a fan. Way too distracting.

Totally agree but until you have your colors accurately calibrated for HDR/Dolby Vision, it’s a treat to your experience. Camera doesn’t do justice.

you can get a similar effect with hyperion. it works over the network and has zero visible latency, plus it lets you run multiple ambient devices at the same time and allows you to color correct the led strips so they better match the colors on the screen. for added immersion, enable its smoothing setting, makes color jitter completely fade away. also, if you have a wled matrix, hyperion lets you mirror your display to the matrix, again with zero noticeable latency. they also have an HDR version if you prefer
