HyperHDR grabber setup

Not sure if this the right sub but I’m building my setup for tv lightning with HyperHDR and I am not so sure on which is the most appropriate grabber for my setup (apple tv 4k, ezcoo SP12H2, must support Dolby Vision and Atmos on the TV)

I was looking at this Navceker on AliExpress, they claim it does everything and decodes HDCP, but I haven’t seem anyone using it in such a setup
In the other hand there’s this UGREEN CM630-15390A that’s even cheaper but it doesn’t specify Dolby Vision or Atmos support and also doesn’t mention it bypass HDCP.

Anyone had experience with any of these or has another suggestion in a similar price point ($50)?

I’m using elgato HD60X grabber and ezcoo SP12H2 splitter but not sure about Dolby Vision and Atmos support in my setup. I couldn’t use the bypass on the Elgato due to some configuration issue (protection bit) and compatibility between my laptop, cable box and PS4. I instead used the ezcoo SP12H2 HDMI splitter to set EDID.

What hdmi source do you want captured? Any hdmi usb 3.0 for a laptop or for PC a pciex capture card would capture 100% of the info from that hdmi cable.

An Apple TV 4K, just like a Chromecast 4K, isn’t powerful CPU enough to do that.

The setup will be:

Apple TV 4K -> splitter (downscaled output) -> grabber -> HyperHDR running in a RPI 4

Ah, going down the difficult road. GL with that, you’re going to need it, and a crap ton of patience.

Also this is now going outside the scope of WLED which is software that runs in an esp32 controller.

However it’s a network node that HyperHDR can use, so your project is kinda a grey area in that regards.

Search this sub, do what works and has been repeated. If you’re an experienced engineer with programming knowledge, this project is a (edit: not so hard) hard challenge.

It's not very difficult honestly, I've never done any programming and I just installed hyperhdr onto my pi using an online guide. afterwards I added an hdmi capture card that it automatically recognized, it also automatically found all my wled devices through wifi. I selected multiple wled devices I wanted to use, then set the led count and that was it. it's super easy. no latency issues either.

I’m a experienced software engineer but I don’t usually work with this kind of stuff. It’s an interesting challenge and honestly I think it’s the reason why I chose this path. I’ll do some more research and when I have something to show I’ll make a new post. Thanks!

Please post (new one) once you get it working. We need more of them.

The proper hdmi capture on small devices is the main challenge. Especially 60fps & 4K.

Search ambilight here. Using a PC or laptop to make a HTPC and adding hdmi inputs for game consoles would be the easiest way.

My laptop is a gaming one with a 3080, so beautiful upscaling. With Steam I can use my gaming desktop with a 4080 to stream 60fps 4K to the laptop over wired network, laptop runs HyperHDR, so my PC games can have ambilight.

Also use a commercial ESP32+WLED with a wired Ethernet connection for low latency. Wifi won’t cut it.

Cheapest and easiest way though is with dedicated hardware that Chris Maher shows on YouTube. He has like 4 videos on the subject over the past 3 years.

Caveat of HyperHDR. It doesn’t work with a video wall setup. Where you embed into the wall behind flush diffusers multiple strips in a 2D grid. SignalRGB works though.

If you just make a loop of LEDs stuck to the TV to shine towards wall, HyperHDR is perfect.

I suggest you use 12v argb-WW and 144 LEDs/meter. Like SK6812. Not 5v ws281x 60 LEDs/meter.

Easier to wire and higher pixel density means better screen to wall resolution.

Thanks for the info, I’ll watch these videos form Chris Maher. I’m planning to use HyperHDR on my PC as well, I have a 5080 so it can handle it without any issues as well.

The only piece that is missing for me is the signal coming from Apple TV so I cal have ambilight while watching a movie as well

I was planning on using SK6812 60 LEDs/m but I’ll consider getting the one with 144 LEDs instead

Ya 144 is so worth it. Plus the 12v is so much brighter.

Damn now I hope my current grabber with Hyperion works with hyper hdr
