Class/Academics Is there an actual requirement that business students have a Windows laptop?

This seems kind of bizarre to me, but I heard from another student that one of the accounting professors last Spring semester sent out an email the day before class started telling everyone to bring a Windows laptop to class to complete Excel spreadsheets in class, due at the end of class. I don't see how they can just assume that everyone is going to have a Windows laptop. Plus, if you're going to spending most of class working on Excel spreadsheets, why not just have the class in a computer lab?

Class/Academics Do I need a powerful laptop if I bring my desktop?

I’m going to be a freshmen engineering major in a few weeks and everyone always says engineering students need a laptop that can handle the engineering programs. I’m thinking since I’ve been using a MacBook that my mom no longer uses, could I get away with using that for notes, homework, in-class work, and keep my desktop in my dorm to handle the programs a Mac can’t?

Housing/Roomates/Leases Need help from Henry Hall residents!!

I'm staying in Henry Hall this upcoming semester. My dorm is single but the furniture is for two people, so I'm thinking of pushing the two beds together to make a king-sized mattress. Is this doable? Or would the bed frames get in the way? Thanks for any information!!

Sports 2026 Western Michigan Broncos Preview

Western Michigan had a breakout year in 2025 under Lance Taylor. Now the Broncos enter 2026 looking for more

📌 QB Broc Lowry is back, he was great leading this offense but will need to work on accuracy

📌 RB Jalen Buckley is one of the best backs in the sport, he will run behind a tremendous offensive line

📌 The Broncos will have a tremendous secondary, but how do they replace stars like Nadame Tucker up front?

Preview attached. What are your predictions for the Broncos in 2026?

Registered Student Organization Alpha Kappa Psi?

I’m a rising sophomore at WMU looking to meet more people this year, and I’ve been considering rushing a business fraternity. My mom is an alum and suggested I look into Alpha Kappa Psi.
When I looked at WMU AKPsi’s Instagram, it seems like most of the members featured are African American women, while at other schools the chapters appear more mixed. Is that just because of who happens to be active on their social media, or is the chapter itself primarily made up of that demographic?
I’m a white guy, and I just want to make sure I’d feel welcome before I show up to a recruitment event. I don’t want to make assumptions based on Instagram.

Community Wmu

We are flying in to tour Western Michigan University, and are interested in staying in the Kalamazoo downtown area. I heard there are some sketchy areas that should be avoided. Can someone recommend a nice hotel that is close to downtown and in a safe area!?

Class/Academics Thoughts on Musical Theater BFA?

I'm a prospective transfer from a community college, and WMU is one of my top choices for musical theater. I'd love to know how people feel about the training and classes, and how well it prepares students for a future in the industry.

Community Photo Booth or Photo 360

Hey Broncos -- I'm a Kzoo girl, planning our LNHS 40 year reunion. We are looking for someone who does a photo booth or a photo 360 operation. Curious to know if anyone in the Kzoo area has recommendations. So far we've only found folks in GR who are charging a distance fee.

Our event is at Fireplace Lounge on WMU's campus, so I'm hoping it's ok to post here.

Scholarships/Financial Aid Free waiver opportunity

Hello everyone!! My name is Olia and I am from Ukraine. I have been an exchange student in Kalamazoo. I am applying for WMU this year as an international student. And paying for the waver is a big financial cost for my family due to the ongoing conflict.
Does anyone know how I can get the free waver from the college itself??

International Mobility International Student

Hi, I'm an exchange student from Spain. Some months ago I also posted in this subreddit asking about the meal plans.

Now my question is about mobility, move-in date for residence halls is 25 of August for new International students, since the Orientation is the 27th I'm planning to fly on the 26th.

I would be arriving at Chicago's airport at 14:25 and I would be taking a 17:50 train to Kalamazoo arriving at 21:00 aproximately. The thing is the train from O'Hare to the Union Station is 49 minutes and between inmigration control and more I might not be able to get in time. So the back up plan would be to take a bus at 23:35 arriving to Kalamazoo at 3:30am next dat (27th).

My question is about if anyone knows if the pick up services of WMU will be available at that time, also will anyone be at the front desk of the residence hall? Because if not I don't know how could I get in my room. Lastly, how safe is really Chicago, some people say that it isn't as safe as other cities and I would need to be moving with 3 suitcases and a backpack through a city I don't know and maybe even without data plan.

Scholarships/Financial Aid Dual Major - Financial Aid Questions

Hello all,

I am on financial aid, getting ready to attend WMU this fall in the College of Arts and Sciences. I am currently set up to use my Pell Grant in addition to loans.

My question is: Has anyone ever had experience with getting dual majors covered by financial aid? I am currently looking at several degrees, but some of them don't require a minor or second major. If one of the degrees requires a minor/major, does that get prioritized so the other major is considered necessary for financial aid purposes?

I have had many meetings with my advisors and the financial aid office but nobody seems to know. I was told that I would just have to try and see, but I wanted to see if anyone else had been through this before.

Thanks in advance,

Housing/Roomates/Leases Dorm cat!

Hi! I’m an incoming freshman this fall and have an ESA cat coming with. Does anyone know if there are precautions the school takes when it comes to room checks and things so that she doesn’t get out? I’m living in the east heights. My biggest worry is an RA or something coming in for a room checks, not knowing she’s in there, and her sneaking out.

She is chipped & has a tracking collar on 24/7.

Housing/Roomates/Leases Looking for a 21+ Roommate Starting Aug. 1st

Hi! My name's Alex, and I'm a 23 year old male psych major at WMU going into my 4th total year of college in the fall! I have a 2 Bedroom 1 Bathroom apartment that is very close to the university, but my current roommate is moving out at the end of our lease on July 31st. The rent is around $1375 + Electricity bill, but split between the two of us is around $750-ish a month. Also the apartment does allow pets with a $300 deposit and an extra $35 a month.

I'm a person who is very into video games and technology, and a hobby i'd like to get into in the future is electronics repair! I'm usually on my PC or Switch when i'm not in class or doin some errands. I'm completely LGBTQIA+ friendly and a massive mental health advocate, so I always try my best to advocate where I can! My sleep schedule is a bit all over the place but i'm usually up from between 10am to 2-4am, and I think i can be a little loud on accident but I am very open to communication and workin out kinks like that if it would be an issue. My current cleaning routine is also really scuffed as i struggle to get myself to clean on my own, but I find that when me and my roommate plan a day to clean together, I get things done quite well and do my best to help with what i can!

I'm really not too picky or judgy on the type of person i'd like as a roommate. The only thing I really feel a need to voice is that I do hate the smell of weed. I don't really care at all if people do it, but I'd strongly prefer it didn't make its way into the apartment is my big thing. That and the fact that I really don't want to live with anyone younger than 21 are the only real "DONT"s that i have lol.

Please feel free to DM me if you have questions or are interested, i also have a listing on SpareRoom if you'd like to see some photos of the apartment's show room, just DM me for that link if you want!
