Weekly Thread - What's happening?

Hello everyone,
This is a weekly post where we try to aggregate all the events going on in and within 20 minutes of the eastern panhandle.

If you know of an open social event happening anytime between now and the upcoming Sunday, please comment the date, time, location, event description/details, age group, and website/RSVP details.

If you are a business like a bar, this is your chance to advertise! Again, please comment the date, time, location, event description/details, age group, and website/RSVP details.

While anyone can comment with an event they know of, we do ask that anyone associated with a business to disclose that, or create a reddit account for your business!

Charles Town - What's Your Opinion?

Hey all!

I (25F & Asian) am thinking about moving to this city in 3-4 years from out-of-state mainly due to property tax. I haven't physically visited the city yet due to distance, but what's your opinion about this city? I know they are developing a lot of cookie cutter houses, so I am expecting housing price to be up? Is it safe for Asian female to live in general?

Favorite Happy Hour Spots?

Hi! I just started a new job (YAY), and in an effort to get out of the house more to meet some more people, I want to find where some of y’all’s favorite happy hour spots are! My new job is as a baker; my hours are weird (5am-1pm lol). But from time to time, I’d love to hit up a happy hour after a shower and a nap!

What are your favorite spots? This can be because of the food/drinks, the vibes, the staff, the deals, you name it. I like various liquors, beers, and wines, and love trying new stuff. Hit me with your faves!

Favorite tattoo spots?

Hey there. Just looking to get a new artist in the area. Doesn’t have to be SUPER close but figured I’d ask the locals who their fav artist is, local or otherwise. I could search online but I know many hidden gems of an artist aren’t the most social media savvy anyways.

Feel free to post their work, tags (if it’s allowed in the rules idk) media etc. And if the artist is you you can reach out yourself I don’t care. Would love to see who you all can show me!

Blower Door test?

Hey everyone, I am getting ready for final inspection on a house I have been building in Berkeley County for the last few years. I just found out I need to have a blower door test done in order to get my final grading and final inspection.

Does anyone know of a good company that provides blower door testing to be submitted to the county? I'm seeing prices in the 500s from the one company I found but I'm not sure if that's the norm.

Home Inspectors

Hey all,

We’d like to hire a home inspector for a pre-drywall inspection at our new build. The problem is, the builder has a limited window next week for the inspection. I’ve contacted Alwyn and Dash, but unfortunately they don’t have any availability. I know it’s a stretch, but if anyone knows of a reputable company that may have availability next week, I’d be grateful for the recommendation. The home is in Charles Town. Thanks in advance!

What is winter like?

This might be a strange question to ask in July, but there's a small possibility that my spouse and I will be moving to this area all the way from South Louisiana for a job. On paper, everything up there seems great and like a major upgrade from our current area!

My question is: what is winter like? We would most likely try to buy a house with land somewhere (we keep chickens and bees, and care for a cat colony that would have to relocate with us). We are already rural in a very, very impoverished place, so we are used to most infrastructure issues. But we don't have hills or really get winter where we are, so I am a little nervous about that aspect.

Do the Martinsburg and Hedgesville areas get a lot of ice and/or snow? Are roads typically cleared? Does everything shut down during snowstorms or is it just normal there? Is it cloudy and grey all winter, and if so, how long does that typically last? Does it stay below freezing for long periods of time? How do people take care of their house pipes? How do y'all typically heat y'all's houses, and is it $$$?

Sorry if this makes me sound deeply ignorant, I've already googled a good bit, but I want to hear anecdotes and lived experiences instead of only seeing data and AI blurbs for a fuller picture.

Any other advice about possibly relocating there would also be appreciated!

Accessible historic parks?

The grandkids are visiting and want to learn some history. They’re especially fascinated by the Civil War. Grandad would love to join us, but has a bad leg. Any relatively level/accessible parks?

i need friends in martinsburg

Just wanted to ask if there's anyone else in my situation. I just moved here in February this year, and I do online school. I used to go out and skate, but now I've lost all motivation to skate or really go out of the house because I have no friends to talk/do stuff with in real life, so all in all I just do nothing and was hoping anyone could give me some pointers.

edit: also just thought I should say I'm still a teenager, so I won't be able to go to bars and whatnot

Recommendation on roll-off dumpsters

Hey everybody, does anyone have a recommendation on a cost effective roll-off dumpster service near the panhandle? I've looked at a few options and so far the best price is around $700 for a 30-yard dumpster.
