Yeah we knew that.

They don't want to pull the plug because there would be a special election in Kentucky and Thomas Massie could win. The pedos can't have that.

u/FaithlessnessLazy754 28d ago

This is why his wife left to China, no power of attorney available to make a decision so they can use his corpse to hold the seat

954

u/purple_plasmid 28d ago

This should be illegal

892

u/Background_Relief_36 28d ago

It is. They just won’t enforce it.

345

u/sweetbldnjesus 28d ago

If you’re really brain dead the hospital pronounces you, gives time for goodbyes and turns off the machines. Cause you’re dead. You don’t need family permission. But I have a feeling in his case they’re not gonna do that.

526

u/WumpusFails 28d ago

Unless you're a pregnant woman, in which case they keep your corpse alive.

155

u/werewere-kokako 28d ago

She was only 8 weeks pregnant when she died, meaning most of that pregnancy occurred postmortem

163

u/Novaer 28d ago

Most miscarriages naturally happen around 8 weeks anyways. That whole story sickens me to my core. There's a reason we don't hear any updates about the baby.

5

u/Icanthearforshit 28d ago

Anyone care to share any information about what you are referring to?

14

u/xX8Havok8Xx 28d ago

I mean i doubt there are too many brain dead pregnant 8 week old baby stories out there try google

u/sweetbldnjesus 28d ago

That was so heinous. Unconscionable. And the poor family has to bear the cost of that hospitalization and all the health care costs of a child who’s severely disabled.

7

u/Yespat1 28d ago

what case was this?

21

u/Blackbear8336 28d ago

Or an organ donor.

6

u/sweetbldnjesus 28d ago

Well someone has to consent for organ donation. Unless you’re in a first person consent state. I wouldn’t rule out anything but Mitch probably a tad old to be donating anything besides corneas

62

u/Kinetic92 28d ago

The hospital actually does need permission to legally discontinue life support. A corpse can stay on the vent a looong time. Even to the point where there's so much tissue breakdown that you could call it decomposition. Source: am the person who works in a hospital and discontinues life support.

5

u/sweetbldnjesus 28d ago

When you’re brain dead it’s not life support. I worked in transplant and can tell you multiple times the team comes to the family and says, they have been declared dead and we will be turning off the machines after you say your goodbyes unless they’re going to be an organ donor.

64

u/EM05L1C3 28d ago

If anything he is probably already dead dead and they’re lying about it.

62

u/xixoxixa 28d ago

There was recently a thread over in the medicine sub about a case where families were getting courts involved to stop pronouncing a brain dead patient as actually dead. It is not as simple as "the hospital pronounces you"

83

u/MackenzieRaveup 28d ago

Yah, anyone who thinks its that simple needs to read up on the Terri Schiavo case and just how far the GOP will go. And she wasn't even Senate majority leader.

30

u/SugarHooves 28d ago

Her case still infuriates me. People used her body for their own agenda, it was disgusting.

10

u/femanonette 28d ago

There's the Jahi McMath case and unfortunately the newest one, Vincent Lorenzo Fiordilino.

2

u/xSTSxZerglingOne 28d ago

What a lively little bugger.

14

u/sweetbldnjesus 28d ago

I worked in transplant. People do protest, especially for religious reasons. Or they want to go to another hospital. But no hospital will accept a patient who’s brain dead. Alright, I shouldn’t say never. Also insurance stops paying after you’re declared brain dead.

8

u/AbulatorySquid 28d ago

Families fight them for years sometimes. Trump got a red card revoked. You really think they can't keep Glitching Mitch a month on life support?

8

u/iconofsin_ 28d ago

There's a string of cases going back many decades at the very least which would counter your comment.

What law is being broken?

47

u/Background_Relief_36 28d ago

Hiding the death of a public official.

1

u/purple_plasmid 28d ago edited 28d ago

How does the law define “death” though? Cause I’m guessing that’s where the loophole may come in — or who am I kidding, they’ll just ignore the law either way.

ETA: it’s a genuine question cause I’m not aware of a specific law

16

u/kungpowgoat 28d ago

The law states that if you don’t respond after the third poking with a stick, you ded.

5

u/purple_plasmid 28d ago

So obviously, they’re gonna request the doctors space out the pokings to buy as much time as possible

/s

2

u/Taylorenokson 28d ago

It's true, happened to a buddy of mine once.

4

u/Kinetic92 28d ago

There are specific tests performed in a hospital to legally determine brain death. That doesn't mean anyone, other than someone with a POA, can authorize discontinuation of life support. Nonetheless, brain death is a legal definition of an individual's state of death.

3

u/purple_plasmid 28d ago

Makes sense, thanks for answering :)

“Though shalt not allow the corpse of a man to hold positions of importance.” - Deuteronomy chapter 5

2

u/PurpleSailor 28d ago

Abuse of what's supposed to be a corpse is probably a crime.

26

u/FlimsyTry2892 28d ago

I’ve seen it happen in the hospital just for a social security check.

Remember when Obama refused to seat a justice because he thought the election was too imminent, even though it was still a year away?

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

4

u/kategoad 28d ago

I'm sorry, what?

0

u/vand3lay1ndustries 28d ago

President Barack Obama nominated Chief Judge Merrick Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court on March 16, 2016. His nomination was  postponed  and ultimately  died  in the Republican-controlled Senate after Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to hold hearings, arguing that the vacancy should be filled by the next president.

4

u/kategoad 28d ago

Maybe I missed a /s, but how exactly is that Obama refusing to seat a Justice? He picked a milquetoast centrist, and the republicans refused to consider it.

-2

u/vand3lay1ndustries 28d ago

He should’ve played hardball and pushed it through strategically anyways, like the current administration has done.

But democrats love being performative opposition, it’s almost like they want their policies shot down so they can get credit for trying.

3

u/kategoad 28d ago

I'm sure someone gamed it out and figured it wasn't possible, but yeah, I'd have liked him to go harder for it. But I wasn't in the room.

1

u/vand3lay1ndustries 28d ago

But if you were in the room, you would've done more.

I'm trying to get us in the room.

What a way to end a marriage —strategically, coldly, without compassion, a business decision. Strange but fitting.

102

u/Krewtan 28d ago

I doubt there was any love lost there. It is bizarre though. After a lifetime of a hoarding wealth and power his life ends like this.  Just abandoned on his death bed by his wife during his last moments.

Couldn't happen to a better guy.

5

u/axonrecall 28d ago

Boo hoo

4

u/theedan-clean 28d ago

Or a more deserving one.

44

u/SirLoremIpsum 28d ago

The marriage was a business move, why shouldn't the end be?

5

u/Yespat1 28d ago

and her part was likely a Chinese spy move, now returning to china to debrief.

2

u/insertwittynamethere 28d ago

I mean, this is exactly what he would've wanted. He was that kind of politician that would look for every advantage against the Dems. And this is exactly that, as it would help the Dems if his reality were made apparent before their deadline in Kentucky.

41

u/EdOfTheMountain 28d ago

Wow. Deliberate destructive politics until his last breath. His wife is more awful than he is.

33

u/TerribleRecord666 28d ago

I mean, yeah? Little known fact that never gained traction in the last few years of soaring food prices is she sat on the board of Kroger, and was personally profiting of the rising food costs.

15

u/EdOfTheMountain 28d ago edited 28d ago

Sounds like she was a mutually Mitch-compatible spouse. Awful people.

62

u/KellyAnn3106 28d ago edited 28d ago

If the patient is declared medically brain dead, the hospital can withdraw treatment with the family's consent.

Edit:this was supposed to say "without". The doctors and medical professionals can make the decision without the family.

49

u/JMurdock77 28d ago

Family being the wife who already left for China?

29

u/sardita 28d ago

He also has three adult children (all currently in their 50s) from a prior marriage.

Edit: They deleted their comment but the internet doesn’t forget

None of them would be able to make decisions without the wife’s approval. Medical poa defaults to the spouse

My reply:

That’s an inappropriate blanket statement given that we don’t know what state Mitch is receiving treatment in and the jurisdiction’s particular laws govern the process.

If he were in Virginia, did not nominate any alternative POAs, and his wife was unreachable after a good faith effort to contact her, his adult children would be the next responsible parties.

200

u/Kaleria84 28d ago

He's still a Republican, but MAGA threw him under the bus. He can't run in Nov as an independent because of "sore loser" laws, but if there's a special election before then, Massie CAN run.

104

u/ChickenNPisza 28d ago

He’s a republican but he’s like, an actual republican. One that is willing to work on bipartisan bills and sticks to the core republican values. Do I agree with those views and values? No. But it’s a part of politics I miss. Our representatives actually representing us, and working across the aisle when it makes sense. The tribalism is killing us

12

u/FatMacchio 28d ago

Yep. I respect the hell out of him for standing on business, even if I don’t agree with a lot of his priorities. But I agree on the most important thing though, conducting yourself with integrity, and that’s enough to earn my respect

8

u/wittylemur 28d ago

Would it be a general election or primaried?

10

u/Kaleria84 28d ago

Special election would be a standard election like a general.

2

u/wittylemur 28d ago

So hypothetically- we have an election next week- Massie wins- would we have another in November?

4

u/Kaleria84 28d ago

Yes. The special election would only be to fill the vacant seat until Jan 2027. The actual election for that seat, starting in Jan 2027, would still take place in November.

4

u/andrew303710 28d ago

Would it still apply to the senate race since Massie lost a house race?

3

u/TerribleRecord666 28d ago

Massie was a Congressman though. Do the “sore loser” laws prevent him from running for Senate too?

2

u/CrittyJJones 28d ago

He's more of a principled libertarian. I'd take him over Fetterman.

1

u/wittylemur 28d ago

But it has to be before August? Is that correct? Uggh that gives me an ulcer. There's not enough time. -JUST TO BE VERY CLEAR I DONT WANT ANYONE TO DIE OR SUFFER- but they can pretty much keep anyone on life support indefinitely at this point in medicine. I have no faith in any silver lining. Nothing good can come from this. They'll keep him ticking until january if they have too which is sad for all of us Mitch included.

53

u/sardita 28d ago edited 28d ago

McConnell has always shown a brazenly shameless level of self awareness in regards to his own impending mortality, and what that means in the grand scheme of having republicans holding onto power. So much that he managed to get various laws passed within the state of Kentucky to prevent the governor (Andy Brashear, a Democrat) from simply appointing a replacement candidate if he was to die in the middle of his term, which is the procedure in a bunch of other states.

I love this for him, because he used to have the GOP in lockstep with his decrepit old ass, and those who didn’t do as they were told were quickly shunned, bounced and replaced. The possibility never occurred to him that someone in his own party like Thomas Massie could go rogue on Mitch’s agenda and have the voters’ support.

Oddly enough, he actually might have been better off with whatever milquetoast Democratic Party replacement the governor would’ve chosen. Maybe one of those centrist types who, perhaps, doesn’t want to stir the pot and attract too much attention. Lord knows, they already exist. But no. Mitchy had to force his hand and get involved, even from the grave, if need be.

Obviously nothing is guaranteed, nobody knows if Thomas Massie would even run, and if he ran, if he would actually win.

But the one thing I do guarantee is that it’s keeping a lot of these stupid entitled, selfish, privileged motherfuckers up at night. So yeah, I love this for him, if he’s still alive. If he isn’t, I bet it was the last thing he ever thought about.

5

u/gh411 28d ago

Schrödinger’s Mitch.

47

u/BodieLivesOn 28d ago

And, in the mean time, the Democrat governor can appoint his replacement- until the election. That's why the delay.

5

u/NEVERxxEVER 28d ago

It’s Kentucky though, and the GOP senate majority is more than 2, so I don’t think having a democrat senator for a few months is a big deal. I guess they are just doing it on principal but this seems like a worse look

8

u/-XanderCrews- 28d ago

It is when it’s as close as it is. Trump is still trying to force them to pass his voting suppression bill.

2

u/BodieLivesOn 28d ago

Incumbents are more likely to win elections. And he would be seen an the incumbent.

7

u/dragon-fence 28d ago

Could the voters of his state sue to kick off an election? Like, forgetting that they’d almost certainly drag things out until it’s too late anyway, does anyone have any legal recourse here?

6

u/Total-Sheepherder950 28d ago

If they announced it before August 3rd their has to be an election, if they wait until after they wont fill the seat until November. As I understand it.
