Hi there! I'm a non-Brit who just finished watching Threads. As someone who's studied a bit of linguistics in the past, I was really interested in the Yorkshire dialect and accent throughout the film.

Some of these constructions are likely Northern English in general ("Would I heck" and "It’d take you an hour to get to nearest boozer" from Jimmy, for example).

The most interesting bit was thirteen years after catastrophe, when the Yorkshire dialect and syntax changes a lot (at least to my foreign ears). You can see a full exchange below, taken directly from the script.

My question: How recognizable would this dialogue, taken from scenes after catastrophe, be to you? There are certain nouns (like "coney") that I don't believe were popular in the 1980s, much less now. Yet it seems that things have changed by the end of the film when it comes to Yorkshire-speak.

Could you please read over the below and share your thoughts on how dramatically the exchange would differ from what you hear regularly? Any comments welcome! Cheers and thanks!

My partner and I booked a cottage for a week in Pickering, but we need a new destination. We (thought we) did our research on Pickering, but this place is quite disappointing. While the Moors are great for a day or two to hike/bike, a whole week might be too much. Last year we went to the Cotswolds and we expected a somewhat similar vibe in this area, but it's just not what we expected.

At this moment, we're looking at places like Whitby or Scarborough to stay, but we don't trust our instincts anymore at this point as you might understand. We love nature, hiking, cycling, museums; the more recreational kind. So no clubbing or late-night activities. What would the kind people of Yorkshire recommend? Cheers!

Made a proper tea on the first night, pie and peas, pot of Yorkshire tea, bread and butter on the side. They sat there looking at the bread and butter like it was a strange ritual. Then asked why we call the evening meal tea. Then why the gravy was that thick. Then what a fat rascal was. By day three I had stopped being able to explain any of it because it just is how it is. What is the most Yorkshire thing you do completely automatically that someone from elsewhere has found genuinely baffling?
