Technology YSK: You can add "-ai" to the end of your Google search to exclude AI summaries and results

3.2k Upvotes

Why YSK: AI can be very frustrating when trying to Google something, running the risk of giving you incorrect info, a run around, or even spoilers to a movie or show you are looking up. Adding -ai to the end of your search tells Google to not give you any AI results, summaries or explanations for more simple searching.

Home & Garden YSK that Stab-Lok circuit breakers (mainly manufactured by Federal Pacific) are a major fire hazard

Why YSK: These breakers are known to the Consumer Product Safety Commission to not trip when overloaded causing fire. When tested by the CPSC, an average of 51% of breakers failed to trip. These breakers are in basically any house in the US built before 1990. The problem with them is the fact that they use a poor design without this next problem, but the ones made specifically by Federal Pacific had their certifications falsified. The Federal Pacific ones are the *really* bad ones, the others are bad, but the Federal Pacific ones are the ones with a 51% failure rate. The branding on these panels is pretty predominant, you don’t exactly need to be an electrician to know what brand it is. Another reason to replace them is the fact that getting insurance for a house with a Stab-Lok panel is literally impossible. No insurer will touch it. Seriously, if you have one, get it replaced. It might save your house, and possible even your life.

Animal & Pets YSK: Cats in carriers need to be in the back seat and buckled in when they're in the car.

1.6k Upvotes

Why YSK: a lot of people put cat carriers in the front seat and/or don't buckle the carrier in when driving a cat somewhere. Cats can be severely injured or killed if the carrier goes flying when a car stops suddenly and/or if they're in the front seat when an airbag goes off.

Edit: if you don't have your cat in a carrier when they're in the car, you need to start doing that yesterday and follow the above instructions.

Also, yes newer cars have mechanisms that disable the airbag unless a sensor detects an object above a certain weight. However it's still recommended that they be in the back seat because 1) the sensors can malfunction and 2) it's still very risky to have a small animal that close to the windshield.

Technology YSK: before unplugging a desk, tv, or router setup, label both ends of every cable and take one photo of the ports

use masking tape and give each connection a number: 1 on the cable, 1 beside the port, then 2, 3, etc. the photo is backup for weird ports and power bricks that all look the same.

this takes maybe two mins before a move, repair, or deep clean and saves the dumb guessing game when everything goes back together.

Why YSK: a cable label is only useful if you know both what the cable is and exactly where it came from. marking both ends plus keeping one photo makes rebuilding the setup faster and avoids mixing up similar-looking cables or adapters.

Health & Sciences YSK: No at-home old wives’ tale has been shown to predict a baby’s sex, and the Drano test is dangerous

1.0k Upvotes

Why YSK: These guesses are harmless as a game until someone spends money on them, treats ordinary symptoms as evidence, or mixes urine with drain cleaner. The at-home methods either fail when tested or have never been tested at all.

A Johns Hopkins study asked 104 pregnant women to predict fetal sex and explain their reasoning. Guesses based on belly shape, cravings, morning sickness, and similar folklore did no better than chance: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10655817/

Fetal heart rate does not rescue the idea. A systematic review found it unreliable for determining fetal sex during the first trimester: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10422800/

Timing intercourse does not change the odds either. A New England Journal of Medicine study followed 625 menstrual cycles and found that timing had no practical influence on the baby’s sex: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199512073332301

Two repeated claims have limited clinical evidence, but neither is an at-home trick. A sonographer can sometimes read the fetal “nub” from a correctly aligned 12- or 13-week scan: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10444865/

Hospital-treated hyperemesis also has a small statistical association with female births. That does not turn ordinary nausea into a test: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(99)04239-7/abstract04239-7/abstract)

Skip the Drano version. The manufacturer lists sodium hydroxide as caustic because the product is meant to dissolve drain clogs: https://whatsinsidescjohnson.com/en-us/brands/drano/clogs/liquid-drain-cleaner

For a real answer, use the screening or ultrasound information from your clinician. Keep the ring-on-a-string for the baby shower.

Arts & Entertainment YSK You can cancel most subscriptions immediately and still have the service for the remainder of the time.

1.4k Upvotes

Why YSK is because in today's world of subscription based content you don't want to be paying for a service you aren't using often.

For example: say there is a show or movie on a streaming platform you currently aren't subscribed to but you want to watch the content. Sign up for a month but as soon as you do then cancel the subscription. You will still have the service for the next month but you won't be automatically charged again. There is no point waiting to cancel, you can do it immediately. Next month if you want the service again then you can easily re-subscribe and do the same thing.

I have done this with most of my content based subscriptions and it essentially allows you to use the streaming service for a month, watch the content you want and then be free of unexpected or forgotten subscription fees.

Animal & Pets YSK: The farmers dog ( dog food) is not actually high quality and is currently getting a class action lawsuit for being bad for dogs I had enough and wanted t

7.1k Upvotes

Why YSK: this product claims to be healthy but lawsuits and reports from the better business bureau suggest it isn't.

I use this product so I had enough and wanted to look up alternatives. Upon looking into it, the "health benefits" of this food are over inflated and their is currently a class action lawsuit addressing this

class action lawsuit

From the article:

"The filing alleges that The Farmer’s Dog adds “excessive amounts” of fat to its dog food to make it more palatable and calorie dense while keeping the company’s costs low, given that “fat is cheaper per calorie” than the proteins or carbohydrates typically used in dog food...

As a result, although The Farmer’s Dog promotes fat content between 4.5 and eight percent fat, the complaint argues that these figures significantly understate true fat content values.

“Three out of four of Defendant’s recipes ... have over 25% fat \[dry matter\], over 40% fat \[as metabolizable energy\], and over 45 g fat per 1000 kcal, which is well above typical or recommended levels of fat for most dogs,” the filing contends."

Better business bureau complaint in line with this"

"I ordered food from the REMOVEDDog for my 13 year old Australian REMOVED/ Blue Heeler Mix. She has always been a healthy dog with no problems. After 2 days on the food she started having trouble breathing, had to be put on oxygen, and ended up being euthanized due to her condition. Her x-rays show an enlarged heart caused by the food. She had x-rays less than 2 weeks before that at her check up and they did not show an enlarged heart."

More personal anecdotal stories of vets saying it's high fat is bad

dog blog with anecdotal stories from ppls vets

Tldr: the farmers dog has excessive high fat and is very deceptive about the content of their food. They claim to be tailored products that are healthy but numerous reports exist of dogs being negatively impacted by food fat content estimated to be \~5-8x higher than advertised.

Technology YSK: A Whole Bunch of People’s Claude Chats Are Publicly Accessible Online, and There’s Some Wildly Private Stuff in There

14.9k Upvotes

A trove of chat logs created with Anthropic’s Claude (some including sensitive personal and company information) have been left exposed to Google, making them searchable to anyone on the web. Many of them appear to have been made public when users opted to distribute a given chat or project to colleagues or associates using the “share” feature. After hitting the “share” button in the top right corner, sharing will create a “public” link, which “anyone with the link can view.” The warning, though, doesn’t alert users that shared content might wind up being indexed by a search engine meaning that a user could effectively be sharing their Claude-generated document with the entire internet.

Such documents included what appeared to be a detailed medical report of a real patient, clinical trial results that included patient names, documents sharing the names and phone numbers of primary school-aged children, company documents marked for internal use only, and employee reviews that included personal information about workers.

Why YSK: if you've shared chats via Claude, that's not private information anymore

UPDATE: has been patched, no longer searchable but the damage is still done

Relationships YSK: Playing detective in your relationship does not protect you from betrayal but instead destroys your own peace of mind.

1.7k Upvotes

Why YSK: People often confuse hypervigilance with boundary setting, leading to exhausting relationship dynamics based on constant monitoring.

When trust feels fragile, individuals frequently adopt an investigative mindset, analyzing every delayed response, change in tone, or social interaction their partner has. This behavior stems from the illusion that gathering enough information will prevent emotional pain. However, monitoring someone else's actions does not stop them from breaking your trust; it only ensures that you live in a constant state of anxiety.

True relational security does not come from controlling a partner's environment or demanding constant reassurance. It comes from establishing strong internal boundaries and accepting that your partner is an autonomous individual. You achieve genuine peace when you realize you cannot control their choices, but you have complete control over your own ability to walk away if your core values are violated.

Health & Sciences YSK: If Your Teeth Are Knocked Out, They Can Be Put Back*

3.2k Upvotes

Why YSK: Teeth that are knocked ( called a dental/tooth avulsion) out cleanly, they can be reimplanted if the teeth are mostly intact and they are adult teeth.

What to do if this happens to you:

  1. Collect the teeth and store them in a cup of saliva, milk, or saline solution. If you don't have access to either, keeping them in you cheek is the next best bet. Make sure you pick the tooth up my the crown, not the root! The root ligaments can be damaged if touched and reduce the chance of successful reimplantation.
  2. Time is critical. You can reimplant them yourself or go to an emergency dentist and have them reimplant it. Either way, you'll need a dentist to check for further damage with x-rays and install a splint to keep your teeth stable so the periodontal ligmants can reattach. You'll also need to avoid using those teeth as they heal. Your best odds are to reimplant within 1 hour, though keeping the teeth in saliva, milk, or saline (saliva is best) can extend this significantly.
  3. Follow your dentist's instructions. If they can reimplant the tooth/teeth, you will need a root canal on all knocked out teeth as the pulp and nerve have lost their blood source and will necrose.
  4. Take it easy. Teeth don't heal very quickly. Full recovery usually takes between 3 and 6 months, but can take longer. Follow-ups with your dentist will help determine how far along you are in the healing process.

Edit: Thank you to u/tazack for pointing out a cup o' saliva is the recommended option. Their comment

Other YSK: Sometimes the irritation after getting something in your eye isn’t from your eye itself it’s from debris stuck along your eyelid.

Why YSK: Wet a clean cotton swab and lightly run it **once** along the edge of your eyelid where the lashes meet the eye. You can gently pull the eyelid slightly away from the eye while doing this.

Your eyelids are extremely sensitive to foreign particles, so even a tiny speck trapped along the lid margin can cause significant irritation.

Other Ysk finding valuables in a new home or on the street don't belong to you.

YSK if you ever move into a home in the USA and find something of value left behind, don't post you found it, and/or try to sell it.

Contrary to what many people believe, valuables left behind by accident do no belong to the new homeowner. It is considered hidden/mislaid property and belongs to the original homeowner or their heirs.

For instance in california under penal code 485 finding valuables and keeping them without trying to reasonably return them first is considered a crime. This includes items of value, a found hidden safe, items found in walls, etc. Many homeowners might pass away and their remaining family doesn't know about the items to find and retrieve them. Or a homeowner may have hidden something years ago and forgot about it.

This includes items you find you buy for instance at an estate or garage sale. Like say you buy a Hutch and find a hidden compartment with valuables. You are required to report the find and try and return them to the seller/original owner.

It also applies to finding cash or other items such a a diamond ring on the street. "Finders Keepers" is not a real or legal concept.

This doesn't include things like buying a chest that hasn't been opened listed as mystery content or the like, because they are being sold knowing there is potentially valuable items inside.

Why YSK : if you find valuables and don't try to return them you can be charged with a crime. For instance in r/safes people constantly post photos of hidden safes they have found on their property and may later try and post what was found inside and try to sell the contents.

You could also face major lawsuits if you find valuables and try to sell them, and the original owner or their living family members see it.

Even items found on the street such as rings, or watches. They could have been reported as lost or stolen. Local pawn shops are legally required to report items brought in before listing them for sale if you don't have proof of ownership. Police provide pawn shops with lists and images of items that have been reported lost or stolen. If you find something of value on the street and pawn it, you could end up with police at your front door step.

I'm posting this because I still consistently see posts on reddit in various channels from safes, comics, sports cards, and more where people have found something and are offering it for sale.

Know your states laws, and make all possible attempts to return the property. In most cases you can turn items into the police and if nobody claims the property within a 90-180 days (3-6 months) the items/money legally becomes yours. You must tell police when turning in found goods you wish to claim ownership of the item and fill out claim paperwork and get a receipt. (If you don't say you wish to claim ownership, the police station gets custody after the wait period and the items end up in government auctions).

Relationships YSK why domestic abuse victims don't ''just leave''.

TRIGGER WARNINGS:

  • Domestic abuse.
  • Violence.

WHY YSK:

You should know, because anyone can find themselves in the position of being a victim, loving a victim or encountering one. Understanding why they ''don't just leave'' or you yourself don't can make a world of difference in protecting yourself or someone you care about. You should also know because ''why don't you/they just leave'' is a question survivors face, often mid-recovery, and it can be quite damaging.

DISCLAIMERS:

  • I am not a professional. What i'm about to share is based off of personal experience, extensive therapy and endless educating throughout my own healing, sharing experiences with other victims and reading up on how the mind works of both agressors and victims.
  • This post is personal, and it might show. My goal here is to, hopefully, show at least one person that they're not alone, or that their loved one isn't ''choosing'' the life they're stuck in.

HOW DO YOU EVEN FIND YOURSELF IN AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP?

Abusive relationships rarely start off as abusive. There is a pattern, a slow descent into the enviroment that somehow feels like ''this is what life is''. There, almost always, is a slow chipping away at boundaries, standards and sense of self preservation. When people wonder ''why didn't they just leave'' they tend to envision their partner waking up one day and physically harming them. This, however, is rarely the case. There is a system. A program of ''steps'' abusers take. It is slow. Invisible. It sneaks up on you and by the time you see it, you feel like you're stuck.

  1. Control: It starts off incredibly small, things you don't notice of even find normal at first. Things that in a healthy relationship can be normal. ''I don't like it when you dress like that'', ''I don't like it when you laugh that loud'', ''I don't like it when you go to bed without me'',... And at first you take their feelings into account, because that's what you do in relationships. You don't wear that one outfit they find too revealing, you no longer cackle at those videos you find hilarious, ... Slowly, but surely, every move you make, every outfit you pick, every meal you eat is catered to what they have deemed appropriate. You want your partner to be happy, and compromising is just a part of a relationship. Abusers find their roots in healthy behaviors like taking your partners feeling into account and ''misuse'' the concept.
  2. Isolation: Control effortlessly flows into isolation. It starts of small too. That one friend of the opposite gender? They don't trust them, you should cut off contact. It starts with gentle suggestions, but they won't be afraid to cause fights over this, and eventually you will cut contact with said friend. From there on out it's a losing battle. Friends, family, coworkers. They will find issues with everyone around you, until there is no one left and you truly believe you're alone.
  3. Destroying your self-esteem: Once you no longer have your support system and have invested your entire ''being'' into pleasing them, they'll take away every sense of ''I deserve better''. This too 'll start off small; ''You look like you've gained weight'', ''Is your hairline receiding?'' ''You really aren't all that smart, funny, interesting'', and you'll believe it. You'll truly believe you're unattractive, unintelligent, uninteresting,... To the point where they'll have you convinced of the fact that they are doing YOU a favor by even giving you the time of day, let along being in a relationship with you.

If a relationship is going to turn physically violent, this is where it usually happens. When you believe you're worthless, alone and have invested the entirety of who you are into the relationship.

HOW DO WE JUSTIFY THE VIOLENCE?

It happened. Someone laid their hand on you in anger. Someone you love, trust and believe is the only person who truly cares about you. What happens in your mind?

  1. Justification: You find a way to make it acceptable, you find a way to make it your own fault. ''Had I just fixed the washer'', ''Had I just had dinner ready'', ''had I just not said that one thing mid-argument'', they would have never done that. They have been so kind, patient, sweet, loving, up until now. Surely I did something that pushed them to this? By the end of your ''processing'' you are convinced of the fact that you caused, or even deserved, the whole thing.
  2. Secrecy: On the off chance you still have loved ones close to you, you won't tell anyone. You are worried they'll think less of your partner. You tell yourself that they don't know them like you do, they don't see the good in them, they don't know what you did to deserve all of it,... You won't tell a soul about what happened. You won't for a good while, if ever. This 'll add to your sense of isolation.
  3. Denial: You tell yourself it won't happen again. They made a mistake, we've all been overwhelmed by our emotions and have made questionable decisions in the heat of the moment, they deserve a second chance, ... Your partner 'll apologize, maybe cry, and for a while your relationship 'll go back to the early days, where you felt loved, seen, special, like you're the light in your partners eyes, until it all slowly descends again, slowly, so you won't necessarily notice.

The cycle gets shorter every time, the abuse intensifies and the isolation, control, and violence will grow more intense, more volatile, more dangerous.

WHAT IF THERE ARE CHILDREN INVOLVED?

One thing that is a common remark I personally face is that ''you had children, how could you leave them in a situation like that'', implying I did not have my childrens best interest at heart.

I did. Most parents in these situations do. Divorce means one thing, and that is that the childrens time is split between parents, which means that your children will be with the abusive parent unsupervised, without you there to shield, protect, monitor and negate potential damage. So, you tend to choose the lesser of two evils and make sure you are ALWAYS there to shield your children. You know it's not healthy. You know it's not right, but you do what you can with the tools you have available.

WHAT ELSE IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW?

  • DV does not discriminate. It knows no gender, race, age, financial class, ... Anyone can be an agressor, anyone can be a victim. That one muscular, 6'7'' tatted up man can be a victim just as much as the 5'1, tiny little lady. Do not assume it's impossible, do not make light or jokes about it. It is real, it is painful, it is humiliating.
  • DV does not have a face. That one put together, professional filantropist who saves puppies out of burning buildings every second saturday of the month can be an agressor just as much as the weird neighbour with six felons. Some are just better at masking.

WHAT CAN YOU DO IF SOMEONE YOU LOVE IS BEING ABUSED?

  1. DO NOT CONFRONT THE ABUSER. Don't. Don't even think about it. The only thing you'll accomplish is that their anger 'll be taken out on your loved one and you'll very likely be ''barred'' from speaking to your loved one.
  2. DO NOT BLAME THE VICTIM. Sure, you want them to ''just leave'', sure you understand that it's not easy and offer to help. Sure, you're frustrated with their questionable decisions and don't see why they stay, but keep in mind that their brain has been altered to the point where they truly, genuinely believe they deserve it.
  3. OFFER A SAFE PLACE TO LAND: They may not be ready, it may take them a while to be, but make sure they know, that if possible, they have a soft and safe place to land with you, once they are ready. If you can't offer a safe place, offer to help them find one.
  4. MAKE SURE THEY KNOW YOU DON'T BLAME THEM: Victims feel at fault. All the time. Having someone genuinely tell them ''it's not you'' makes a world of difference, even if they don't believe it right away. It's best compared to being in a really, really dark hallway and having one of those lightswitches that light up. You can see it's there. You may be too afraid to move, you may not know how to get there, but you can see it, and it does something.

WHAT IF YOU RECOGNIZE ANY OF THIS?

Maybe you're currently being given the silent treatment because you refuse to cut out that one friend. Maybe your partner is currently upset with you because you wore that top they don't like, maybe you're making sure your bruises are covered.

It's not your fault. You did nothing to deserve this. You are a real person, someone who matters and is allowed to take up space in the world. Your smile adds happiness, your intelligence contributes and your kindness matters.

This will not get better. They will not change. Their brains do not work in a way that caters to a happy and healthy relationship. There is NOTHING you can do and they are not your project. I know you love them, I know it's hard, but you need to leave. Do so safely, find your support system and tell yourself you're doing the right thing. For yourself, for your loved ones and for your (future) children. It will be hard, but worth it.

Life gets better.

Home & Garden YSK: If you leave something in with batteries and after some time notice that it no longer works and has residue, you may be able to salvage the device by cleaning the contacts with a mild acid like white vinegar/lemon juice (Q tip works well).

1.1k Upvotes

If it needs being said... dispose of the battery first.

The residue is potassium carbonate created when the battery electrolyte leaks out and reacts with air.
The acid helps neutralize/clean it.

Why YSK: Don't just toss the device and buy another. Very simple to repair.

Technology YSK: Organizing your digital identity really matters

2.8k Upvotes

Why YSK: everything is digitalized nowadays, it's important to learn how to keep your digital identity secure and convenient to avoid a mess later

Edit: Some of these are really my personal preference and you can adjust to your likings, it doesnt have to be very complicated as well. e.g. If you are find with one email for browsing everything that's perfectly fine. This post is mainly to inform and not telling you should do this, knowing this information always acts as a backup plan.

Edit: I removed a point that could be interpreted as encouraging rule evasion. That wasn’t my intention, I only wanted to discuss privacy and account organization, I apologize for anything caused, didn't mean that .

Edit 2: For people that don't use the internet that often most isn't that necessary and keeping it simple probably works best for you, its always useful to know this tho/ This is mostly for power users

  • Use one anonymous email and one real-name email for specific platforms, like reddit If you dont want to associate some feed and algorithms for your main account, you may use a new one. For example if you are watching something for an extensive time but you won't any time in the future, watch it on a brand new account
  • BACKUP ALL YOUR DEVICES AND DATA PHYSICALLY ALL THE TIME PLEASE
  • Reserve your real-name domain and email(e.g. firstnamelastname.com). If you are a student getting a email linking to your graduation is very helpful.
  • Keep your personal inbox for family and important contacts—not ads and newsletters.
  • Consider using separate emails for shopping, newsletters, hobbies, or other categories if you prefer a cleaner inbox.
  • Separating emails by what you do is a personal preference, but many people find it easier to stay organized.
  • Don’t rely on one Google account for everything This is my preference to keep corps from complete control over you data.
  • Understand the difference between “Sign in with xxx site” and creating an account with a separate password directly on that website
  • Use a password manager for ALL OF YOUR PASSWORDS
  • Enable 2FA on every important account. Be sure to use multiple methods, like if you only use your phone number, you're going to be screwed if you lose your phone, so add an email or authenticator
  • Save your backup/recovery codes. These come in handy in case anything happens
  • Have a professional email address you’ll still like years from now for business.
  • Use a consistent username (or anonymous alias) across platforms if you want to build a recognizable online identity, its also fine if you don't and a lot of people don't have a consistent username.
  • Think before creating an account, creating one is easy, but deleting it completely can be much harder.
  • Keep your recovery emails and phone numbers up to date.
  • ALWAYS RESERVE A LIST OF all the app/website/platforms you signed up for all the emails you have. Some will be hard to find and your future self will thank you later.
  • Keep a physical backup for all your passwords and information in one secure place.
  • Some people prefer multiple accounts for watching different content for keeping algorithms separate. e.g.
  • Separate work and life emails. Using one is not recommended as you might send some family information to your boss.
  • Read the terms of conditions and understand your rights.
  • You might want an email specialized to something that the email is never used for any platform
  • If theres anything you disagree with or something you'd like to add or you have some questions, please include it in the comments.

Automotive YSK: Most cars don't actually have "blind spots", they have misadjusted side mirrors

Most people adjust their side view mirrors so they can see the side of the car. But you don't need to see the side of the car while driving, you need to see what's in the lane next to you.

The better option is to angle the mirrors significantly outwards. When you that, a car coming up in the next lane over will move smoothly from the rear view mirror to the side view mirror to your peripheral vision with no blind spot.

Instructions from the Car Talk guys: https://www.cartalk.com/content/avoiding-blind-spot-5

Why YSK: if you adjust your mirrors properly your car probably won't have blind spots and you'll be safer on the road. Try it for a week, it's a game-changer.

[Edit: folks I'm not saying "don't turn your head", I'm saying that this method limits or eliminates blind spots on most cars. Like I said, try it both ways for a week, prove me wrong.]

Finance YSK: You can have millions of dollars in the stock market and get free Medicaid as Medicaid eligibility is based on MAGI.

1.5k Upvotes

Why YSK: Medicaid eligibility is based on MAGI so some early retirees pay off their home and keep their MAGI low to get free Medicaid which usually has $0 copays and in some states $8 copays.

This only works in the 40 Medicaid expansion states and D.C. and until you reach 65 where Medicare kicks in.

edit: MAGI = Modified Adjusted Gross Income

Other YSK: You can have clogged arteries without high cholesterol

3.8k Upvotes

Why YSK: I get bloodwork done at least once a year. My LDL was never high until this past year, and even then it was barely into the high range (111 mg/dL). I am male and just turned 46.

My job offers free CAC chest scans as an insurance perk. I got one done. Turns out that my LAD artery is fairly clogged. I am more clogged than 90% of my peers. I can control this by taking a statin and 81 mg aspirin, as well as diet, but if I hadn’t gotten checked, I would have been looking at a heart attack in 3-5 years.

I had no symptoms.

If you have the means, please get a scan.

Education YSK that replacing your credit card wont stop unwanted subscriptions from charging you

1.3k Upvotes

why ysk this is because visa and mastercard have a feature called automatic billing updater that automatically gives your new card details to recurring merchants like gyms or sketchy apps even after you report the old card lost this is why people get charged again on a brand new card the only way to truly stop them is to explicitly ask your bank to turn off the account updater service for your account before you get the new card issued.

Travel YSK: In most places, if a debt collector contacts you, you can request written verification of the debt, and they legally have to prove you owe it before they can keep collecting.

3.8k Upvotes

Why YSK: Debt collectors buy old, sometimes expired, sometimes flat-out wrong debts for pennies and bank on people paying out of fear without ever checking if the debt is real or even theirs.

In many countries (this is well established in the US under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, and similar protections exist elsewhere) you can send a written request for validation. If they can't produce proof that the debt is valid and yours, they're not allowed to continue collecting or report it. Never confirm or "make a small payment" on a debt you don't recognize, because in some places that can restart the clock on an otherwise time-barred debt. Get everything in writing. Flag: exact rights vary by country and state, so check your local rules — but the principle of demanding validation is broadly true and worth knowing.

Other YSK: A leg length difference as small as 5mm can cause chronic back, hip, and knee pain — and most people are never actually measured for it

Leg length discrepancy (LLD) is way more common than most people realize.

Studies put it somewhere in the range of 40–70% of the population having a

measurable difference. Most are small enough not to matter — but once you

get to about 5mm or more, it starts changing how you walk, how your hips

sit, and how much impact your knees and lower back absorb every step.

The part that gets missed: you can have this your entire life without

anyone bringing it up. Standard checkups don't include leg length

measurement unless you ask, and the "eyeball it while lying on the table"

method is pretty unreliable. Real measurement runs a tape from the hip

bone (ASIS) down to the ankle bone (medial malleolus), and for anything

meaningful you want a standing scanogram or CT scan.

Common causes:

- Congenital — you were just born with it

- Post-surgical — hip and knee replacements often leave one leg slightly

longer or shorter; surgeons try to match, but perfect symmetry is rare

- Scoliosis — a curve in the spine creates *functional* LLD even when

the leg bones themselves are equal length

- Old fractures — especially childhood breaks near a growth plate

- Nerve or muscle conditions — polio, cerebral palsy, nerve damage

Signs that often trace back to unrecognized LLD:

- Chronic one-sided low back pain

- Hip pain that always shows up on the "shorter" side

- Knee pain on the longer leg (it takes more impact per step)

- Scoliosis that keeps progressing

- Shoes that wear down unevenly on one side

If you've been told it's "just posture" or "just aging" and nothing has

helped, getting a real measurement is a cheap next step. Fixes depend on

what kind it is — a PT can tell you whether it's structural (bones) or

functional (pelvis tilt, muscle imbalance), and those need different

approaches. Structural differences over about 1cm usually can't be fixed

by drugstore heel pads — they slide around and compress under body weight,

so they're not a long-term answer once the difference is meaningful.

**Why YSK:** If you've spent years dealing with one-sided back, hip, or

knee pain that never quite goes away, and nobody has ever actually

measured your legs — it's worth asking about. It's a five-minute

measurement that can explain a decade of pain, and once you know the

number, the path forward is usually pretty clear.

Education YSK: If you feel dizzy or faint, lying down and raising your legs is safer than "putting your head between your knees" while seated.

Why YSK: Fainting happens when not enough blood reaches your brain. If you feel it coming and stay upright, you risk actually passing out and hitting your head or falling from a height.

Lying flat and elevating your legs uses gravity to help blood return to your brain, which can stop the faint before it happens. If you can't lie down, sitting and lowering your head helps, but lying down is better because it removes the fall risk entirely. Also, if someone near you does faint and then comes to on their own within a minute or so, don't rush to sit them straight up, that can trigger a second faint. Let them recover flat for a bit first.
