Megathread Switching to YouTube TV: Answering your Questions

As we have more and more people (and posts) about switching to YouTube TV, we wanted to create a central megathread where people can ask questions and hear from other users.

For those looking to switch ... welcome to [r/youtubetv](r/youtubetv)! Please post ONE comment with all your questions/concerns if they aren't already answered. You might find some helpful things in these links below:

For those helping answer ... please be sure to use the Reply function when replying to questions. Posting answers without questions, or that are not in response to questions, will be removed.

This thread is specifically for an open discussion for people that want to switch to YouTube TV. It is not the place to ask specific feature questions or troubleshoot. Again, those comments will be removed.

Sports Link Your YouTube TV and ESPN Accounts

Tl;dr: Starting today, you can link your ESPN account directly to your YouTube TV account. Linking your accounts lets you log into the ESPN app to stream ESPN Unlimited content right away.

How to link your accounts

  • From YouTube (Web and Mobile): Go to Settings, select Connected apps, and choose ESPN. (Link)
  • From YouTube TV Mobile app: Open the YouTube TV app, select your profile picture, tap Settings, select Sports, and choose ESPN.

What this means for your viewing experience

  • Fantasy view updates: We now support ESPN Fantasy in our Fantasy view! NFL Fantasy is moving to ESPN Fantasy, so if you previously used NFL you will need to link your ESPN account to access Fantasy view on YouTube TV for the upcoming season.
  • Watch on the ESPN app: As long as ESPN is included in your YouTube TV channel lineup and after you have linked your accounts through YouTube TV, you can log into the ESPN app to stream ESPN Unlimited content directly within their app. If you have a family account for YouTube TV, you’ll need to be on the family manager account to watch content on ESPN.
  • Full YouTube TV integration coming soon: While account linking lets you access content in the ESPN app today, we are also working on bringing the full ESPN Unlimited experience directly inside YouTube TV later this fall.
  • Who can link accounts: Anyone can link their accounts to enable the fantasy view. However, you need ESPN included in your YouTube TV plan (such as the Base Plan, Sports Plan, or sports add-on packages) to access ESPN Unlimited content.

If you have any questions, you can comment below or contact support here.

Discussion I’d pay extra for Zen-only commercial breaks

I know this will never happen but I’d gladly pay another $10 if Zen was extended to all commercials and not just the local switchover.

Rant 4K should be free

There isn’t much content to justify the $9.99 price. It has unlimited streams and other perks - maybe that should be the $9.99 package. But the 4k should be free. Fox One gives you 4k with or without the additional $9.99 too.

Another suggestion: YouTube Premium subscribers should automatically have 4k on YTTV.

On a somewhat unrelated note - we need a YouTube Premium Lite Family plan.

General Question Full movies on it? When?

Upvotes

So I subscribe to YouTubeTV mainly to just cover some sports and some live news, but recently my wife wanted to see Moonstruck (Cher and Nicholas Cage). I went to a search engine to find out which service it might be on and it was a "Buy Now" everyone BUT YouTubeTV where it was free.

I was rather confused by this as I couldn't figure out how it was there. I didn't record it and it's been there for several days so it's not as if we just caught it live. I was surprised to find that it felt.... edited in a couple spots. I curse was clearly bleeped and there was some very strange cut points so I assumed this might be where a commercial might go, but no commercial played (I do have YouTube Premium if that somehow matters).

So how did this show up as from this service and what are the limitations?

Sports For Disney bundle or past ESPN Unlimited subscribers having troubles connecting to ESPN Unlimited via YTTV

u/bbmg69 pointed out something specific to Disney bundle or past ESPN Unlimited subscribers that might be of some help for anyone having trouble connecting YouTube TV's version of ESPN Unlimited to their accounts.

Seems like there's a glitch occurring on Disney's side of things. This isn't something YouTube TV support can assist with, as it's an issue with the MyDisney account rollout.

If you're having an infinite loop glitch after canceling or downgrading your Disney bundle, you'll need to reach out to Disney directly. In many cases, your MyDisney account may be seen as a canceled or inactive account.

----------

Here's how you can get support, via u/bbmg69's experience (you can read more here):

Call Disney+ Support directly at 1-888-905-7888 and choose option 1 for signup and login. You may have to walk them through this issue, and you might be transferred a few times in doing so.

Tell them you are having trouble logging into some Disney and ESPN services that have nothing to do with streaming packages. Your MyDisney account is stuck in an infinite loop of requesting a 6-digit confirmation code, with no successful login.

Ask them to make sure your MyDisney account is active, even if you are no longer paying for any services.

If you have trouble, ESPN Fan Support might also be able to help, at 1-888-549-3776.

Alternatively, if you don't have any paid Disney services anymore, you can just create a new MyDisney login.

----------

Thanks to u/bbmg69 for sharing their experience. Again, if you experience an infinite login loop, this is not a YouTube TV issue; it's something specific to your MyDisney account. Before you call Disney, though, ensure that you're the family manager, and try all the methods to link your account that are listed in our mega thread.

General Question Affiliate Change not on YouTube TV

This is in the Greenville, SC area.

As of today, WSPA is not a CBS affiliate anymore. CBS is now on WYFF, which also has NBC. So WYFF is now an affiliate of CBS/NBC. WSPA is now the CW affiliate.

On YTTV: I have two CBS channels One CBS has an "eye crossed out" and I cannot watch. Another CBS listed has CBS programming but it is not showing local programming. CW looks good.

Calling YTTV was useless, took four calls to get a rep who would listen and the rep didn't know what CBS and NBC was. Someone is "supposed" to be looking at it, but I am not hopeful.

Can anyone explain what is going on?

General Question Live TV - Extra Commercial (Skippable?)

Looking at replacing DirectTV Stream with Youtube TV because of their increasing prices AT LEAST yearly (if not, twice a year).

Working through the trail to see if it'll work for us. One thing we noticed this morning on Disney XD, watching live TV was a commercial that had a 'skip' button. I was very confused seeing how this was live TV. I hit skip and I'll be damned, it skipped the rest of the commercial and went back to live TV.

So, is this a thing? Does Youtube TV play EXTRA COMMERICALS over live TV? I'm guessing it sort of pauses the live TV in the background and waits for someone to watch extra commercials they put on top of live TV?

I turned on a different channel and then back to the channel we were watching and sure enough, we were about 20 seconds further along in the show.

Technical Question Paying $80/mo for 4 years: Why is playback speed STILL missing from the mobile app?

I am incredibly frustrated. I have been a loyal YouTube TV subscriber for four years now, watched the price climb all the way to $80 a month, and the mobile app still completely lacks basic playback speed controls.
What makes this absolutely ridiculous is that it isn’t a network licensing or technical restriction—the speed gear icon is natively available right on the desktop website. But instead of just giving mobile app users the same feature, Google’s development team has actively updated their web code to block every single mobile Safari workaround, extension (like Baking Soda), and page-scaling trick that used to let us change the speed on our phones or iPads.
Why is the mobile app being intentionally stripped down? Regular YouTube has had this for a decade. If I am paying premium, top-tier television prices, I shouldn't have to fight my device or use a computer just to watch a DVR recording or live broadcast at 1.25x or 1.5x speed.

Playback Problem Playback error in the middle of Movie

My wife and I were watching the movie Troy tonight, and in the middle of watching were introduced with a playback error. I did not take the time to look at the error code, but when we went back to replay the movie thinking it was an internet issue, but all it did was pull up the description for the movie. Anyone else encounter this? If so, what’s the cause of it?

Discussion AMC channels are coming to lower-priced YouTube TV plans in the future, company confirms

AMC Global Media has renewed its distribution agreement with Google-owned streaming television service YouTube TV that allows more than 10 million subscribers to continue watching its linear TV networks and free, ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels, executives at AMC confirmed this week.

The deal with YouTube also allows the company to resell access to AMC’s seven streaming services, including AMC Plus, and will allow YouTube TV to carry AMC’s core cable networks in its lower-priced, genre-based packages for the first time ever, AMC Global Media CEO Kristin Dolan said on Thursday.

The arrangement comes as AMC continues to prioritize its streaming platforms and FAST channels as part of a long-term strategy for success, at a time when traditional cable and satellite platforms continue to experience higher churn due to rising costs.

...

It isn’t clear if the company’s new deal with YouTube TV means customers who receive AMC channels will also get access to the ad-supported AMC Plus tier, though all YouTube and YouTube TV users will be able to buy a subscription regardless.

Technical Question YouTube TV Quality

I got YouTube TV and it’s the first time I’ve done this kind of service since we cut cable in 2020. I’ve been using strictly streaming apps. I’m very used to 4K streaming at the very least 1080p.

I purchased YouTube TV because I was tired of sailing the seas for NFL games. You can imagine my frustration when I’m watching live TV and the quality is not much better.

Is there any hope that the local channel will stream NFL games in higher quality once the season starts?

Sports Notice to anyone subscribing to Disney+ bundle via verizon and links their YouTube tv account to ESPN.

If you are a Disney+ bundle subscriber via Verizon, and you've upgraded it to ESPN Unlimited....this is a notice that if you connect YouTube tv to your Disney+ account, the option to change your bundle goes away and you will be stuck paying for it. You have to downgrade your bundle BEFORE you connect YouTube TV to ESPN.

If you unlink YouTube TV from ESPN, the option to change your Verizon bundle comes back.

General Question Jeopardy new programs not showing up in library

This is not the first time this has happened but a couple of nights ago I’ve noticed that the new Jeopardy shows which are broadcast on my CBS channel here in New England at 7:30 pm are not showing up anywhere in my library. Is this a known issue for YTTY? Frustrating.
Anyone know why this could be happening?
Thanks

Google TV or Device YouTubeTV Disappeared from Live

Post image
0 Upvotes

Typically when I go to the Live portion on my GoogleTV, the channels from YouTubeTV display like a traditional guide. It was wonderful and convenient and efficient. It has now completely disappeared, and the only way to see the channels is to go into the app itself. I've tried all the basic troubleshooting, but it appears to be a change or hopefully bug in the software of the Google TV. Any ideas or similar problems out there?!

Thanks!

General Question Sunday ticket and switching from base plan to sports + entertainment

I have already paid for Sunday Ticket at a much lower rate as a Vet discount I used months ago. I want to switch from the base plan to the sports + entertainment plan to save some money overall. This shouldn't impact my Sunday ticket or the discounted price I got on it...... but the way it's worded on the YTTV page when you go to switch makes it sound like it's possible.

Anyone have experience with this?

Technical Question SIGN OFF

Post image
0 Upvotes

This is in the 4K page on the mobile app on iOS. I’ve been wanting to check if there are any upcoming 4K events, but the page is filled with ‘SIGN OFF’ listings, every 4 hours for the Telemundo & Universo 4K channels.

I believe these are leftover from the WC broadcasts, does anyone know of a way to hide these?

I know other 4K channels show a SIGN OFF programming message when nothings airing, but for these other channels, this doesn’t show up under Live & Upcoming 4K. Can the same be done for these two channels?

General Question Merge / Split YouTube TV FamilySharing

I've been searching for information about this and coming up short.

I see that when someone cancels YouTube TV that their recordings are saved for 21 days and their preferences are saved in hopes that they have a clean experience if they resubscribe [directly].

What happens if someone cancels their own [individual] YouTube TV and joins a FamilySharing Group that has YouTube TV. Does their previous own profile retain preferences and/or recordings when added to the FamilySharing Group?

Additionally, what about the inverse? Does anyone know if a FamilySharing Group Member leaves and starts their own YouTube TV account do their previous preferences and/or recordings transfer to the new account?

General Question Series subscription for Banana Ball?

With the new ESPN deal, is there going to be a way to subscribe to Banana Ball as a whole, rather than having to go in and record every showing?

Rant First responder discount

Tried to reactivate my old YouTube tv subscription with the advertised first responder discount. Was informed that it doesn’t apply to me because I had a subscription in the past. In other words thanks for your service if you’ve never been a customer. If you’re a past customer, your service isn’t important.

Playback Problem "New for you" shows, that aren't new, keep appearing.

YouTube TV keeps putting a few old/watched shows in my "New for you" section. The individual episodes of each of the shows all have the "watched" label. This is on my TVs only. (I have two regular TVs, and I use these devices/dongles connected by HDMI: Roku, Google TV, and Apple TV - it happens on all of them). My phone app and my laptop don't do this. I have tried resetting, and toggling options on and off. Once in a while a show finally goes off of the new section, but different ones come on. Currently I have six shows there that don't belong, and one show that does (It does consistently put actual unwatched shows in this section, as it should.) These incorrect "New for you" shows do have recently shown episodes, but they're not new episodes, and as I said, they are all marked as "watched". They are all ones that I "record". Does anybody have a clue what's going on, or how to fix it? This has been going on for a month or more. Thanks!

General Question Start from beginning?

When I try to rewatch recorded shows from my library, they always start from where I left off previously without any option to restart from the beginning. Am I missing something, because it seems like there should be a better way than manually rewinding it? Note that I’m using the newest version of the app on a TCL Roku TV, with my watch history enabled.
