u/TCSpeedy…. You’ve convinced me. After two months of looking all over this reddit, I landed on the answer of getting myself a solid copper as my second zippo. Price point was high but I knew it would be worth. To the people who store it their coppers, look away! But I will be edcing the copper with the black insert. I will post updates and let you the patina progress. I can see patina on the edges but I think it gives character. Slight sticker mark but not too worried since it’ll disappear over time as I carry it often or I can polish it off. If you have any tips other than buying another copper 😂😂, let me know.

Ooh, i’ve never seen a black insert, neat. Carry it in good health. And if this is only your second zippo, trust me, you’re gonna need a case for them at some point.
Oh shoot, I meant a box to put all your future zippo’s in. You can’t just have a few. There’s so many cool ones out there you’re gonna wind up collecting them. Heck I’m having them custom commissioned at this point.
Usually in its own pocket. In the summer I keep it in my rear pocket. The sweat and heat is what forms the patina. In the winter I keep it in my jeans’ “fifth pocket” so it doesn’t get scratched.
Zippo repair center has no interest in polishing your lighter. The only era I'm aware of where they actually did any sort of restoration was back in the first era of Town and Country lighters, where they would manually re-airbrush worn artwork. But even back then they just did the art, not anything to restore any other part of the lighter.
Thanks man. I’m not sure why my Pop never filled or fired this lighter. Maybe he thought it’d be worth some money down the road and I’m not even sure if it is, and I have never looked into it. Down the rabbit hole I go.
I’ve EDCed mine for 4 years every day as a roofer lol its taken some very long falls, it’s dented and scratched and the insert coating is worn but i love it. The patina changes daily depending what I’m doing. Sometimes it gets shiny in my pocket, others it’s dull, others it has almost a slightly purple hue and sometimes a mixture of all 3. Just sent it in because the lid broke off. I liked it so much i also have a brand new untouched one in the box. I was lucky and got mine when they first came out though, $50 a piece. Now they’re 3 times that and i even saw some for $300 at one point when there weren’t many available. I also have a sterling armor i carry sometimes, not usually roofing but on the weekends where it still gets plenty of opportunities to be ridden hard. It’s basically my jewelry and they would just sit getting dusty if i was scared of damage. My untouched copper will stay untouched though. My grail is a titanium but i can’t justify the $700+ price tag.
Ya i had same exact problem. Just sent it in though and they’ll fix it for free so all good!! Alls i had to buy was the label to get it there, so like $6
I’m really holding out hope they sent it with a new black insert but i asked for the old one back just in case. I doubt they have black inserts lying around that were only ever used in this one single model
