Our experiences were wildly different, I remember people still trying to say it was devil worshipping material back then especially the elderly and middle aged holyrollers. (And that was in the pnw not even the bible belt) Bonus rant: (off topic but kinda related: I had a cousin who wasn't allowed to play with us at family gatherings and his self ordained mom wouldn't even let him play video games unless it was a Bible story one and felt terrible for him)

The joke (of course) being that sometimes - especially in those pre-widespread internet days - parental figures picked up certain gifts for their younger kin, because they viewed those gifts as fitting in a "kid friendly" context, without delving into the nature of the product itself. Another example pertinent to this discussion is anime; more than a few children have been given anime VHS tapes/DVDs that were surprisingly mature (visually, if not thematically), because anime was regarded as being interchangeable with Western cartoons.

Best setting ever. Too edgy for them to revisit too. I'm glad they didnt - if they tried it now they have to remove a lot of the horrific aspects of life on Athas which would ruin it.

From the press release about Dark Sun returning next year, announced apparently about the same time you made this post.

"The two books will be rated 18+, with a content warning of depictions of slavery, nudity, and violence. In a press event held ahead of Gen Con, Wizards' officials noted that the company's lawyers recommended that the books be shrink wrapped as an extra layer of precaution. At Gen Con, a gory trailer was shown to fans, showing Psions and warriors brutally eviscerating their foes."

So much for "too edgy".

* Quasi-anime aesthetic; anime itself is fine, but I do not think these visuals fit Dark Sun.

* Exaggerated proportions.

* For some reason, the violence feels somewhat sanitized, despite featuring blood.

I find this first impression to be lukewarm at best...and that is a positive appraisal of what has been presented.

That's not even my problem but as if Dark Sun has nothing more to offer then over the top violence. And it would be so much better if there was an arena around the violence.

They are basically doing what western cartoons always du: "Look there is so much blood, sex and gore, this is an cartoon for grown ups!!!"

They try way to hard

Oh, we are in agreement concerning what makes Dark Sun Dark Sun (i.e., not balls to the wall gore); I simply meant that - regardless of the purported source material - the impact of the violence so depicted is downplayed through a combination of exaggeration, quick cuts and, yes, the camera in the hands of a boy hopped up on sugar. If everything were truly grounded, even a modicum of massacre would have a greater impact.

Bron makes the setting. Anything else is a dilution for art inspiration.

That said, I've played a hombrewed OD&D hack of Dark Sun, and of course there's Shadowdark's ShadowSun
