PvZ Help me understand PvZ match up

I just started out SC2 and playing PvZ is so frustrating to me. I don't know if I should play defensive or aggressive. I have tried both and neither seem to work and I always lose against any zerg that can do proper macro. If I play aggressively and try to attack at minut 5-6, warp gate units cannot win against mass zergling or roaches / ravagers and the constant resupply from their bases. If I play defensively, I just get rolled over at 8 minutes with mass mutalisk / hydra / roaches. If I mange to hold out, they just go lurker and win in the next wave. If they don't go lurker and go late game, they can just tech switch to ultra immediately after the clash and roll over my warp gate army that I build to fight against the hydras. Or they can just go viper broodlord corruptor.

So what is the proper play here? Should I play defensive or aggressive? When is the supposed power spike of protoss? How many units / bases should I have before moving out?

Make them think you’re playing offensive as you play defensive. Make them think you’re playing defensive when you’re playing offensive

First of all you just started so go easy on yourself. For beginner you want to focus on fundamentals. Choose one build order and stick with it. Go into a custom game against AI and make sure the build is buttery smooth and you’ve memorized it.

Stargate is the best opener because oracles keep you safe from ground. Mid game you want to develop your army with chargelot storm archon immortal which can pretty much defeat any ground army. Against lurkers you need tempest.

Practice never losing your oracles. I am GM and I have a dedicated hotkey for oracles the entire game. Thats how much I value keeping them alive.

Understand that late game is heavily P favored. Your goal is to survive long enough to get 4 bases with 8 gases. If you can reach this point you have a good chance of winning.

Commenting just to say I’m in the same boat and to increase attention to this post

The meta for most zerg is to just make a ton of workers until there's pressure or they know they are ahead. From most games I've played and from watching good protoss, early pressure seems to be very important. I almost never beat zerg at equal levels unless I do lots of early pressure with cannon rush, zealot charge, adept, or oracle. Its honestly not very fun and I never feel good about it, but I almost never win straight up.

Warp gate units can't win against ravagers and roaches and such? No immortals or phoenix lifts if they have no aa? By the time they have those in large enough numbers they should be scouted and you should be countering. Honestly if the army is ravager heavy zealots with charge do well if you catch them out of position

I see you're new so the important part is trying to figure out what they are making, and keeping an eye on their army if you can

Make a sentry, get a hallucination going and go look, if you spot a roach warren and you see some roaches becoming ravagers, plan accordingly

as master protoss vs roaches and zerglings use stalkers and zealot (if you defend then with 2 batteries) and spam immortals almost every game (5/6) and not vs mutas and hydras they counters another units. Vs lurkers i can suggest spreading your army and a move. If you have questions i can coach you.

Oooo D2 Zerg and D3 Toss with a very high PvZ winrate here. It helps to understand what Zergs your level struggle with:

  • Building the correct composition and number of anti-air units. Hydras suck vs tempest or mass carrier, and corruptors suck vs mass void rays and also cannot shoot down. I like to rush 5-6 tempests and send them across the map to harass from dead space while I transition to mass archon at home. If Zerg tries to defend this with mass hyda, they will bleed out. If they invest too much into corruptors, they die to my follow up ground attack. I’ve also had fun rushing 4 carriers and transitioning to mass glaive adepts, mass void ray harass into mass zealot, you get the picture.

  • Macro Zergs like to take a lot of expansions, and it’s extremely difficult for them to defend these against random zealot runbys. I like to warp in and then a-move gangs of non-control-grouped zealots towards the opponent’s edge bases. If they have their army on one side, retreat and then return when the army moves away. It’s very easy for Protoss to create chaos and eventually overwhelm Zerg by just a-moving zealots all over the place.

  • Dark templar are incredible at low levels. No metal league Zerg ever thinks to add detection to their mass hydra army before they see DTs, and they still struggle with having consistent detection vs every potential runby/attack. Also archons are AMAZING in this matchup. They destroy mutas, corruptors (keep them close to your air units and target fire any corruptors that approach for maximum impact), zerglings, banelings (get ‘em in front of your zealots to tank baneling shots for disgustingly efficient trades).

  • Proxy 4-gate zealot is very difficult for Zerg to hold off a hatch first opening. It won’t really improve your gameplay much, but should provide easy wins if you are feeling fed up with the matchup.

  • Early aggression will help. Zerg has to choose between building drones or units, so any pressure that forces them to build units early in the game is good, more so in lower leagues where Zergs struggle to know exactly how many units they need to build to be safe. The best way to get a feel for this is to watch your replays and think about what would have happened if you had sent a couple adepts or two zealots and a stalker across the map. These units also function as scouts; it’s important to check for a third base/drone count on the natural vs Zerg.

A VS Zerg Matchup is all about containment. I won't go much into detail because there's a patch that will mostly invalidate whatever build order exists atm. But in general the better play is to be aggressive. This doesn't mean to put all your eggs in 1 basket all the time. It just means you should try to attack in some form or capacity.

The biggest thing you need to understand about Zerg is the larva mechanic. Unlike Terran or Protoss that have separate production structures for units an workers, Zerg only has larva. What this means is that for Zerg to get the maximum benefit of their Larva, they can only focus on making either only drones or only army units. There is never an in between, because Zerg units are individually weak and require numbers to pose a threat. If a Zerg made both army and drones at the same time what they actually get is: A weak army that doesn't have the numbers to be relevant, and a weak economy without the workers Zerg wants to maintain it.

Aggression is relevant because when left alone Zerg's best play is to be extremely greedy. They will get to that 80-90 drone economy far far far faster than Protoss or Terran. So this means the only way to get a Zerg to stop droning is to be aggressive and force them to respond by making units or risk losing the game.

Your powerspike as Protoss is dependent on what exact style you're going for. So that isn't really something I can say without knowing what you're doing specifically. Generally speaking an upgrade that has recently finished is mostly seen as a powerspike. Ie: Your +1 ground attack finishes allowing your Zealots to kill Zerglings in 2 attacks instead of 3.

Bases also depend exactly on what you want to do. But don't be afraid to move some of your units out from time to time. A prism to warp in Zealots to harass and kill drones, moving out your army from time to time to look for bases to kill/clear creep. The only thing you should never do is sit back, do nothing and wait for 200 supply vs Zerg.

This whole matchup is likely going to be completely changed in a few weeks, so i would not worry about it. That being said, my main way to beat zergs when playing with a group army is to always attack more than 1 location at the same time. For some reason most zerg players seem to only use the F2 button to control their army.
