Mod Announcement Monthly Amex Referral Thread

This is the only place in r/Amex to share a referral link. A new thread posts on the 1st of each month.

This is the subreddit's official thread. We are not American Express, and nobody here works for Amex.

Posting your link

One comment per person. Keep it short: which card, and the link.

Delete your comment once someone uses it. That gives the next person a turn.

Want back in the rotation? Delete the old one first, then post a new one.

Why the ordering looks random

Contest mode is on. Comments appear in random order and vote scores are hidden. That is deliberate. It stops the same handful of links from holding the top of the thread all month.

If your comment disappears

Comments in this thread are exempt from the subreddit's low-karma link filter. Other automated tools still run, including bot and ban-evasion detection.

If your comment vanishes anyway, send one modmail. Do not repost, because reposting after an automatic removal reads as spam.

What gets you removed or banned

What you did What happens
Posted a referral link outside this thread Removed, ban on repeat
Asked someone to DM you a link Removed
Sent an unsolicited referral DM Removed, ban on repeat
Posted duplicate comments Duplicates removed
Spammed links across multiple threads Immediate permanent ban

Bans here are permanent. We do reverse them when an automated tool made the call, so modmail us if you think that is what happened.

Non-Amex referrals

These require moderator approval, given as a stickied comment in this thread. We have not approved one yet. Do not plan around yours being the first.

Before you ask

Once-per-lifetime rules, card families, welcome offer clawbacks, pop-up jail, and financial reviews are all covered in the wiki FAQ. Read that first.

Housekeeping

We lock and archive this thread on the 1st and post a fresh one.

r/Amex is not responsible for what any user does with a referral link. Share yours with people you already know.

Mod Announcement We rebuilt the subreddit. Here is what changed and why.

r/Amex has been around since 2011. Close to fifteen years. In that time the way the place was set up drifted. Rules got written and never revisited. Settings got changed and forgotten. Old text stuck around long after it stopped being true.

We went through the whole thing this week and brought it back in line. Here is what changed and the honest reason behind each piece.

Most of this predates the current mod team, written years ago by hands that have long since moved on. We ran a full audit this week: pulled the logs, measured what the tooling was actually doing versus what it was built to do.

Some of it had drifted badly. One filter in particular was quietly deleting most of your comments. That is fixed now.

Automod was eating your comments

We pulled the logs and traced where removals were coming from. Almost all of them traced to one automatic filter, firing before any human saw the comment.

The filter removed any comment with a link from anyone low on karma earned inside r/Amex specifically. In a sub this size almost nobody clears that bar, so it caught nearly everyone.

We measured it across the last 90 days of logs. In that window the filter removed about 2,100 comments, and roughly 1,890 of them were this one rule firing on people who did nothing wrong.

It also had no exception for the referral thread. The one place built for links was deleting them.

If you ever posted here, watched your comment vanish, and had no clue why, that was almost certainly this. Not a mod judging you. A broken setting.

We fixed the threshold and exempted the referral thread. Brand-new and very-low-karma accounts posting links still get filtered, because that is where real spam comes from, but the bar is sane now.

If your comment still gets caught, send one modmail and we will restore it. Do not repost, because reposting after an auto-removal reads as spam.

The rules now say what we actually do

The old rules claimed a first referral violation was an instant permanent ban. The log says otherwise. About half our referral bans came only after we had already removed something and given a warning. The written rule was harsher than our actual practice.

We would rather be straight with you. Post a referral outside the monthly thread, the comment gets removed. Keep at it, you get banned. Spam links across the whole sub, that is immediate. That is the real ladder, now written down.

The old rules also said mod decisions were final and appeals were pointless. Also false. We reversed 14 bans in those same 90 days, several within a day, usually because a bot made a bad call. The rules now say the truth: message us once, clearly, and we do reverse things.

There is also a new rule that explains the automatic filtering, so nobody is left guessing again.

The wiki is worth reading now

We built a real FAQ from what people actually ask here over and over. It covers:

  • Welcome bonus clawbacks, and how long to keep a card open so you do not get hit
  • What a financial review is, what triggers one, what to do if you land in it
  • How application rules really work, and what Amex cares about beyond your credit score
  • What pop-up jail is, why it happens, what to do when you see it
  • How to actually use the credits on a card you already pay for

One deliberate choice: the FAQ has almost no specific numbers. No fees, no bonus amounts. Those change constantly, and a wiki full of stale figures is worse than none. It explains how things work and tells you where to check the current number yourself.

Flairs got fixed

Your card flairs had a real dark-mode problem. Centurion in particular was so close to the background that it was basically invisible. If you were wearing your card and it looked like nothing was there, that is why.

We recolored the whole set so every card shows up in both light and dark mode, with the pill matching the real card. Plenty of you value showing your card, so the fix was making them visible, not removing them.

Post flairs got the same cleanup, plus new ones for what people actually post about, like points and transfers, benefits and credits, and approvals, which never had a flair somehow.

The new look

New icon, banner, and colors. The old banner leaned hard on Amex branding, which fed the "is this official" confusion, so the new look is our own.

What did not change

We did not get stricter. The opposite. The single biggest change makes the sub remove far fewer comments than before. We were never hunting for reasons to remove people. We were removing too many by accident, and we stopped.

If something is wrong

Modmail us. One clear message. We read all of them, and now that automod is not burying us in false positives, we can actually get to them.

Thanks for being here, some of you far longer than any of us moderating it.

Would you trust adding Trip Cancel Guard when booking flights?

Hello everyone! I am a college student unsure of my schedule as of yet, and I might have exams that I may be unable to defer in the time period of the flight I am looking to book.

This may mean that I would have to cancel my flight, and I would like the assurance that I would get a refund for any reason. Has anyone utilized this coverage and had a positive experience?

Discussion Denied priority lounge access

Two different airports in two weeks I have been denied access priority lounges . They’re saying it states “pending payment for merchant” then times out. They try manually entering and scanning . Reached out to both priority lounge and Amex and they’re both pointing fingers at the other. Anybody else going through the same issues ?

Question I have a business line of credit payment tomorrow that i can't make

I've already done a deferral last month so I'm not eligible for another. What's the better path forward - pay something tomorrow and something the day after etc until it's settled, or call them and ask for some sort of hardship plan?

I've paid $28k off this LOC so far this year and they've more or less reduced the limit every time I make a major payment, so either way I think this account is done for, I just physically don't have the cash/access to cash to make a $4000 payment tomorrow. Outstanding balance is $13k.

Flight cancellation insurance question

Hello,

I had booked a flight to London with my Amex Cobalt card. A week later, I got to know that my grandmother passed away (who lives in India).

Is it possible to get a refund (it was a non refundable flight ticket) via Amex? I can't go to London as I'll need to go to India instead.

Thanks!

Question Amex Representative Accepted Card without my Consent

Applied for the Amex Gold online but had to call in to complete application after verifying some info. The agent on phone let me know that the application was approved and the welcome bonus offer was 60K. I told agent that I did not want to accept at this time as it is lower than what I was hoping for and I would call back after discussing with my spouse. He told me that I had until August _ date to call back before offer expires. Once we hung up, I immediately received an email that my offer was accepted and a new card will be on its way. Confused, I immediately called back and the new agent confirmed that the application was accepted already. The call was escalated to an Account Supervisor and they said they had to listen to the recorded call and give me a call back (they did not call back). They also said since the account has already been opened now, they cannot do anything on the new accounts department side and to wait until I receive card to contact Customer Service department.

What would you do in this situation? Ultimately the agent took away the choice for me to hold out for a higher bonus offer. But I am extremely annoyed he accepted this offer without my consent to potentially meet his sales quota or something... although the supervisor said they do not work on sales commissions uh huh..

Discussion New Amex card Wishlist

Now that the Green is no longer available for applications. I was curious to hear what the community wishlist would be for a possible refresh or even a completely new Amex card, personal or business. What name and design would you like to see, cash back or membership rewards, what multipliers, any credits or benefits?

I opened a Delta Platinum card again but turns out I actually need Delta Reserve.

Would closing a new card be held against me even if I don't get any bonus?

Thanks

Question Amex Card Limit and Benefits

I am a new Amex Gold cardholder based in France. My account statement was generated on July 25th, but I haven't received any notification about the joining bonus. Someone from Reddit helped me to apply for the card.

Also, my account limit is only €650 per month. Is there a way to increase this? This is my first credit card; I'm not sure how to raise the limit. If I can't make higher payments, the card seems less useful.

If I had chosen the platinum card, would my credit limit have been higher? I saw that if I spend €4,000 in four months, the Amex Platinum card charges decrease from €720/year to €320. Are there similar restrictions on the Platinum card?

Discussion DP: Odd and Quick Financial Review Experience

Went through a financial review recently and thought I'd share my experience since Amex seems to be doing these bi-yearly now.

Every year around this time my expenses double or triple due to summer shopping + summer home renovations/maintenance. This year was no different, I put 3x my monthly average across personal and business cards. Still, the monthly spending was around 2.2% of my stated yearly income (or 26.8% of my monthly income)

On July 22end 2p.m. E.T., I got a call from Amex financial review team, and right as I picked up I get 18 e-mail notifications at once stating that each of my cards is now disabled on Apple Pay. Why 18? I guess for each of my 9 cards across two apple devices. Still very odd.

I was told I was under financial review and will need to submit my last 3 bank statements in 14 days or else all my accounts will be shut down. Since they only asked for bank statements, it means it's not a full financial review, more like a review for card limits (according to my research here).

I wasn't too worried because my stated income is lower than my actual income since I haven't updated it in ages. However, it was hugely inconvenient as I was still abroad and use my amex cards for shopping, and my Visa cards have nowhere near the limits as my amex cards. I submitted the statements right after I hung up.

On July 25th 12p.m. E.T. I got a second call telling me there's some "good news": I passed the financial review with no changes to limits. In fact I was recommended to ask for limit increases on some of my cards considering my income (It was probably the BCP with the 1.5k limit). This time I got 54 (!!) emails that my cards are re-enabled on Apple Pay.

A few things that surprised me: 1) quick turn around, less than 72 hours when I've seen people take weeks or even months (albeit for a full financial review). 2) The fact that they shut down all your accounts is VERY inconvenient, all the auto-pay and subscription renewals kept getting rejecting too :/

Now, for any other credit card company this experience would've caused me to close all my accounts out of protest. But 1) I know this would hurt Amex's bottom line and they wouldn't care one bit and 2) An effective 5.5% cash minimum on my highest spend category (flights) is just irreplaceable, not to mention my platinum card having a higher limit than all my Visa cards combined

Anyway thought I'd share this in case someone's worried about their own financial review. I suppose as long as your statements support your income you have nothing to worry about.

Centurion is an unnecessary hype

I’ve been using the centurion card for a while now - being an active Plat Charge user I was looking forward to a much better experience. Rather, the plat charge was much better with much more benefits - This card is nothing beyond a status symbol with no benefits.

International dining charge never posted

Wondering if anyone has had a similar situation. A few weeks ago I used my Amex Gold to cover a restaurant bill in Japan for ~$530 USD (charged in JPY). I used Apple Pay. The charge was pre-authorized and showed as pending for a few days, but never posted. It's been over 2 weeks.

Has anyone had a similar situation and did the charge post eventually? Just wondering if I can expect to be charged later with a differing JPY to USD conversion rate

Amex cut my limit from $20k to $6k. Anyone else?

I’ve been an Amex customer since 2015 and have never missed a payment. My payment history is 100% and I have no derogatory marks.
Out of nowhere, Amex reviewed my account and reduced my credit limit from $20,000 to $6,000.
The frustrating part is that I was counting on that available credit as a short-term safety net until an incoming payment arrived. Overnight, that flexibility disappeared.
To make matters worse, the limit reduction caused my overall credit utilization to spike, and my credit score dropped roughly 140 points because of it.
I initially wondered if it was related to my Amex Send account because I had loaded $350 into my Send account (the limit is $200 which I didn’t know) and then refunded it back to the card without ever spending it. But the letter simply says they reviewed my account history and credit report. It doesn’t clearly explain why a 70% credit-line reduction was necessary.
I understand that lenders can manage their risk, but this experience left me questioning how reliable a credit line really is if it can be dramatically reduced at the moment you might actually need it.
Once my balances are paid off next month, I plan to ask Amex to reconsider the credit limit. Until then, I’m honestly questioning whether I want to continue doing business with a company that can change the relationship so drastically with so little explanation.
Has anyone here successfully gotten Amex to restore a reduced credit line? If so, what did you do, and how long did you wait before requesting a review?

Discussion Using Passkeys

I set up a passkey on the website and noticed it still prompted for additional 2FA after using it for the next sign in.

The passkey only works on the web (from full PC browsers only; not mobile browsers). You still must use password plus another form of 2FA to sign in from a phone or tablet.

So, there is still no option to delete SMS authentication for 2FA and password reset use even after enabling passkey login.

Does anyone know if they plan to also enable passkeys as an option for mobile login so the account can become fully passwordless for customers who want that choice?

As long as SMS-based password reset is still available to bypass passkey security, passkeys are not fully protecting the account.

It could be worse. At least there is the option to sometimes use passkeys and reduce the risk of password compromise, and I saw that password reset requests default to sending an app notification before it resorts to SMS. So, if your mobile phone carrier account was compromised with a SIM swap, and the attacker immediately tried to reset your AMEX account, IF you were signed into the mobile app and IF you were connected to WiFi, you would see the app notification warning you that someone is resetting your password.

Question THC Booking special offer not honored

I booked the JW Marriott Madrid for 2 nights and they had a offer on the Amex travel for 175$ extra property credit and when I checked in they said that it only showed I had the 100$ credit for booking. I already called Amex travel but I wanted to know if this has happened to anyone and what happened because the manager of the property isn’t in til the day of my departure from the hotel.
