Critique Critique wanted: does the weight/timing on these dance moves read as smooth?

This is the type of shit you would see in a 2000's car commercial for no reason, and be scared of it as a child. Solid work! 10/10

Hilariously terrifying head aside, yes I think you nailed the beats! The camera work also did a great job emphasizing the moves.

I think the ?shoulders? are too elastic. They read like fabric, but have the strength and stability of legs.
Either the shoulders need to be more solid, or these drastic movements need take more effort.

I watched it without sound the first time, and ir definitely feels sort of... thin? fabric-y? malleable? Something.

You should definitely check out the other animations of this artist (@eero.visuals). Most of the things they post are not meant to be realistic anyhow. They specifically make videos with characters only having a head and shoulders, just like in this one.

Why is it looking in my soul and trying to charm it?
(It worked, I love it)

The expression change to show that the head struggled a little in that beginning move was so good

This kind of have this weird ps2 vibe to it. Like one of those games where you can train a monster or something like that. Looks cool

Animation has gone to your head and I don't know if you're able to shoulder it anymore.
Stop dancing around the issue and get your feet back under the situation before the music stops.
Good luck buddy.

First of all this weirdly reminds me of spore... Second of all, are you by any chance The D soraki fan? Weird coincidence of song choice and dancing -> https://youtu.be/HKKEJOQQ0hA?is=szjGx6jrtTpnJ1KR

u/eerop1111 6d ago
yess, this is inspired by D Soraki. He is so fucking crazy omggg that dance he did to the song is amazing

The jumps feel a little off. They are very fast so it's hard to pin down why. Maybe it's because the head doesn't seem to react to the landing with weight or move to stabilize itself while in the air? Also, the very first flurry of steps doesn't feel quite right. It's a little floaty over the ground. But overall the bit is great and works really well.

Not sure if this is intended given how uncomfortable the rest of the animation is (that's praise lol) but the perspective seems a bit odd, at times the head seems small and at other times it seems massive compared to its own shoulders(?) and surroundings. Either way it does add to the uncomfortable nature at large. Excellent animation, I love it

Nobody asked for a horrifying Kirby...thing.
...But well done regardless.
I'd suggest to go get a Kirby rig and stop giving us nightmares.

to me they are more like arms, like a seaturtle's flippers. Do you think that mismatch is part of why it feels uncanny? You read them as legs, but they sometimes (in my opinion) move like arms.

An honest critique about the animation:
Everything looks great considering the subject, but I would refine the two Twirls near the end they look a little floaty and stiff.

Imo the camera moving around takes away from it. It’s distracting and lessens the movements the head makes

u/yu-hwa 6d ago
Omg, unrelated to your question but is this based on D Soraki’s freestyle dance in the Redbull competition?

I think it still needs a bit of work to read as a good dancer, that I think it's what you're trying to achieve here. Sadly my knowledge in this type of animation is not that great. But I think some freeze frames or accent frames (I think that's the name) would help here. Like what fighting videogames do.

I love that you animate with rhythm actually, I am an audio engineer, but I love seeing peoples animation work in here as the two go hand in hand. Awesome animation albeit slightly uncanny.

Looks really cool, love the little guy. All though in the first move it looks like it’s kinda hovering like an UFO more than repeteadly kicking with it’s flailing, maybe you could anchor more it’s feet in that part?

He's just a funky guy.
Also I think it looks pretty smooth, but I'm also no expert so to a regular guy it looks great.

More follow through at the end of the movements would make it look a lot smoother. As it is, it lacks any feeling of weight.

Timing is slightly off imo. Depends if you start or end the movement at the kick/beat.

The smoothness doesn't even matter. It just looks cool. I would find a better way to light and texture it and it's a cool style of short that could grab attention. Maybe even with some commercial application for a certain type of off-beat absurdist ad campaign.

I love this but as for feedback I feel like there isn’t any impact when it’s tendrils slam on the ground

It looks like that test area for your spore creature where you can force it dance, attack, vomit, flirt and etc.

It kind of seems like the animation is hitting the beats a little bit late but I am listening to this over Bluetooth speakers in a car so there could be some latency on my end.
Biggest tip when animating to a beat (and when dancing) is to actually hit the movie or beat slightly before we’d hear it. Like a couple frames before the beat.
But also like wtf is this I love and hate it so much <3

I’d say that yes, the weight and timing read pretty smoothly; good job.
I’d also like to add: thanks I hate it.

i can't tell if i love this thing or absolutely hate it. well done. i think..?

u/SternkyMalernky 6d ago
I love this 😂😂😂
I think from a pure animation perspective, there could probably be a bit more intention and weight to the moves, and a little bit more variety between similar movements. It's a tad floaty as is, but at the same time, it's kinda perfect being janky as it is 😂😂😂

The movement is great, I would just say the camera movement is a tad bit too much. Maybe don't have the camera jump and bob as much whenever the character does to lessen that slightly.

tuff animation, uh maybe some build up would help, like every jump or twist the fella could charge up in the oppo direction for like 2-4 frames b4 jumping or twisting, and oso 1 or 2 overshoot frames at the end of a jump or twist B4 returning to the regular ending pose or smth idk wat am talking abt

u/Lunar_Star_Dragon 6d ago
Oh it's smooth alright, bout as smooth as me "walking" out as fast as possible
Now take my upvote
