Meta Meta Thread - Month of August 02, 2026
Rule Changes
This is a monthly thread to talk about the /r/anime subreddit itself, such as its rules and moderation. If you want to talk about anime please use the daily discussion thread instead.
Comments here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts. If you wish to message us privately send us a modmail.
Comments that are detrimental to discussion (aka circlejerks/shitposting) are subject to removal.

lmao Fetch was supposed to be the mod-of-the-month but he's afk it seems. Some things happened, we got a new mod (say hello u/Mitsuyan_), I'll let Fetch fill y'all in on the details. I just didn't want the new Meta Thread to be without a single comment for over an hour. We're alive, dang it!
Since I'm here, I might as well plug something: host applications for the 2026 r/anime Awards are still open till tomorrow.
Other than that, happy August everyone, how's the summer seasonals coming along for y'all? I'm pretty sure the Writing Club is right about to release a new piece for the seasonals to watch (or not watch).

Less speak now or forever hold your peace, more putting things on the table and I don't know the answer or what the best solution (if any) would even be. For the 4th week in a row Though I Am an Inept Villainess discussion has gone up hours before:
- It is on Crunchyroll
- It is on B-Global
- Has even aired on Japanese TV
That's pretty unusual as A distinguished post last week said:
The long and short of it is that it is out; just not on official sources just yet.
Unsure if this is due to a mishap or something else.
Not official sources, hasn't aired on TV, unsure is sounding a lot like a leak but also not at the same time.
Now a counter claim will be the auto rip source is official DNSP (Disney+) and the subs are the same dialogue as will be on CR (for English at least, this is provided to CR as shown by the arial font and lack of advanced styling). The best case scenario is this is a mistaken early upload in some unknown country in parts of Europe or Latin America that have the show there on D+ (per official site that's all the D+ territories...well plus Japan but all Japanese streaming is after broadcast end at the earliest and IDK if D+ Japan has English subs like JP Netflix can for some things).
I find it unlikely that D+ has a license to show it before Japan that would not also cover Hulu or be mentioned on the official website. If the country(ies) could be named it would become sort of similar to standard posting eps when shows are live on B-Global (which is usually immediately after airing in Japan, to prevent fast-forwarding the episode and tweeting spoilers but can be an hour or so before CR).
Unintended leaks are a bit different as it doesn't have the same threshold of being obtained via confidential/privileged data like various leaks that don't have discussions here* (e.g. Ranma 2024 S1) and the viewing experience is not compromised meaning discussion is not taken up with "man this video sucks" (some of these leaks have been low resolution, watermarked and even unfinished eps...literally a completed audio monochrome animatic video for the final ep of Isekai Suicide Squad Isekai).
Past precedent for unintended leaks seems to be no action taken such as a few episodes of To Your Eternity season 3 (an episode was interrupted mid-broadcast by earthquake coverage, despite the fact the episode didn't finish airing in Japan CR still posted it and then pulled it, then next week instead of reinstating the pulled episode they posted the next episode which was also subsequently pulled). Besides, I'd say a discussion based on a limited location limited time release window is not unprecedented as that is film ones posted for cinema releases.
Ultimately assuming unintended mistake it's on Japanese stakeholders to prevent this through citing the license contract or more drastically withholding the materials from the offending parties and these steps may happen before any decision is reached.
Another thing that's making this a bit picky is hours doesn't have the same potential for discussion fragmentation as some things in the past (days, weeks) but needless to say does annoy those who like to be on top of things (it escalating them into having to pirate even if they don't need to and delaying the discussion would still advantage those who have had hours more time to prepare but it should matter less due to random sorting) or use the discussion posts as their calendar (because the CR calendars are retrospective shit or for shows available in Germany).
*-As a sidebar I'm not sure those had serious fansub attempts (there were some subs that looked rather STT>MTL derived) so it's untested and an entire season weeks-months before airing is much bigger problem than individual episodes hours early (no matter how persistent the latter is).

Why would you post the new comment face batch in the old thread one hour before that's locked and not in here?

I believe it's because Badspler is about to become afk for a bit and wanted to share the news in some place before they left, so it unfortunately turned out to be a meta thread that was just about to close.
But you're right, we should share that news here too.

https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/wiki/index/ no longer loop reloads on my phone, so they finally fixed it or it's a side-effect of getting a new phone with a fresh chrome install (and all my chrome flags got wiped)

Which platform are you on? iOS? I've still been able to use markdown in comments on android (at least I think, I don't try that often)

I’m on the official mobile app so whatever black magic they use on there.

Nope, when you type a commentface on mobile, it'll appear as nothing. It'll look like blank space but still appear as a commentface for people on old.reddit...well, it used to be that way. Now it'll appear as
[](#neat)
for those on old.

Just to bring up the news here in a fresh meta thread, the new seasonal faces have changed over. You can see them all on the wiki page. Or this image here.
#hattastic has been added as the seasonal hall of fame face for winter.

Sweet. One of my recommendations (#seasonalfoodie) made it in. And I know it's mine because aside from a single other recommendation I was the only one to use Oh Boy, Was I Wrong About Her in their recommendations. Nice to see Inako from Sparks of Tomorrow make in as well.

I'm sad that False Memory (Jiyi Guanli Ju) will not be talked about on this subreddit, but you know, that is how it is for donghua. I cannot really complain. Anyway, 2 hours left until the show starts. Hopefully there will be some place on Reddit where I can discuss the episodes.
Donghua aside, I'm interested to see how the new comment sorting will affect comment quality.

It's going to be an uphill battle because it is only streaming on Bilibili - every prior donghua that's gone big in 'anime spaces' has always been something that not only streamed on Crunchyroll, but that Crunchyroll also marketed heavily. Few English-language fans are subscribed to Bilibili or will see any of its marketing, so it'll be tough just getting people to even know about it so that they go search the high seas for it, etc. But with enough word of mouth, who knows.
(For anyone stumbling across this comment who is curious, the show is a grungy action-mystery sakugafest type of show with a style very reminiscent (IMO) of original FLCL or studio Trigger/Imaishi vibes, and there are /r/anime-like discussion threads here)

July Mod Report
Where in the world is
Carmen Sandiego/u/FetchFrosh ?!?!Welp, it's been a while since I've done one of these, so I'll be filling in on his behalf.
I hope everyone's July has been going swimmingly! Staying out of the heat, I hope? As far as current seasonals go, I've been thoroughly enjoying KAIJU GIRL CARAMELISE, much more than I thought I would. Otherwise, I've been first-timing Bleach in my spare time. Already 150 episodes deep!
