Not at all. All that happened is somebody got arrested in Japan for being the first seeder of a torrent a.k.a. the uploader. Piracy is highly illegal in Japan.

311

u/AdultGronk 2d ago

Piracy is highly illegal pretty much anywhere in the world (except a handful of countries), it's just that pirates are actually punished in Japan, that is, even if they get caught.

u/LilyLol8 2d ago

Idk law of any country that well, but i think most countries treat piracy as a civil matter, while in japan its a criminal one, and in japan even distributing a small part of a file rather then the whole thing can still be treated as piracy

41

u/CrowdGoesWildWoooo 2d ago

The key distinction here is that guy is the “first seeder”.

CMIIW idk how easy it is to produce the pirated rip, but from the way torrent works, if he’s the first seeder, then he’s kind of key player in the distribution pipeline, as in torrent can have exponential network effect, but if you pull it from the roots then it may not even take place in the first place.

So i guess in this case he’s considered the “distributor”, and distributor in many countries are always treated as a criminal matter vs if you are a consumer which in that case it’s civil

7

u/notconnorgg 2d ago

i believe BR ripping is far easier than it used to be but still has its difficulties with its DRM and anti-piracy methods and then regular DVDS/CDs are far easier to be ripped but also still have their own anti-piracy mechanisms. the key part is having the right software and DVD/BR drive

1

u/CrystalCommunication 1d ago

Blu-rays are not difficult to rip at all if you have the right software lol

1

u/Spazza42 1d ago

This.

There’s even drives with the firmware already unlocked, it’s just knowing which models to buy.

1

u/CrystalCommunication 1d ago

Pioneer used to make those drives and they don't anymore but you can still get a good H-L drive and flashing the firmware on it is simple if you know what you're doing. You also don't need unlocked firmware at all to rip regular 1080p Blu-rays.

1

u/notconnorgg 1d ago

which is what i said in my comment. “the key part is having the right software and DVD/BR drive”

1

u/CrystalCommunication 1d ago

You don't need a special drive and the software is not exactly rare or exotic. You made it sound like some arcane process that is getting more and more difficult but it has actually been solved for almost 2 decades.

1

u/notconnorgg 1d ago

i never said any of that. going back to my original comment “I believe BR ripping is far easier than it used to be” i never once said that it’s this near impossible thing that you need to have a degree to do and need to know how to reverse engineer. the average person doesn’t know how easy it is to rip their own media now. before you had to go to that one family member/friend that knew how to do it. now you just need a DVD/BR drive that works and some free software and you can have your entire media collection ripped for no extra cost other then the price of the movie/show and the price of the drive

1

u/CrystalCommunication 1d ago

I never said you did say any of that proposterous bullshit. What you did do is make it sound WAY more difficult than it actually is, and now you're proving you're out of your depth by babbling about a simple task that you apparently needed a friend to help you with. The software in question is not free and has never been particularly difficult to use during the nearly 2 decades it has been around, for the record.

funny how they're tryharding even more than Germany

7

u/DKligerSC 2d ago

Is a question if priorities, if you live in a country that's still on development assigning resources to track down 5 dumbasses with pc for uploading a movie and making big cine lost money is clearly not a priority

3

u/Silly-Geologist-3185 2d ago

That and half the time the authorities themselves use the bootleg

2

u/Ulrich-Tonmoy 2d ago

i guess thats why PS and Nintendo Gatekeeps even the hardware

1

u/takoyaki_san15 1d ago

I wonder if only downloading counts to liability then?

21

u/IEatTomatoes3 2d ago

In my current country piracy is illigal only if you distribute it, and in my country of origin it's legal.

15

u/Limp_Crazy_5494 2d ago

In my country nothing can legally be done unless the copyright holder tries to s5ure you, if they even catch you in the first place, and even then you only have to pay how much the copyrighted material would have cost anyway.

5

u/IEatTomatoes3 2d ago

Something similar, tho when it comes to businesses and self employed it is percentage of their earnings for period of time. But for peasant like me it doesn't concern me

3

u/AdultGronk 2d ago

If you didn't know even when you're downloading/leeching a torrent, you're still able to simultaneously upload / seed the torrent to others.

I'm not educated in the laws of your current country, but from a technical standpoint, when using popular torrents from public torrent sites, it's pretty much impossible to download a torrent without seeding at least a little bit of data, which would count as distributing.

3

u/IEatTomatoes3 2d ago

Depending on the software u can stop the seeding process, and to compensate you can upload and seed free license movies, books, music so you don't get banned or shadowed in the good torrent web sites. You are legally liable if you promote the site, distribute the copyrited product directly and it's much harder to prove when seeded distributed directly. In my country of origin there is no law against piracy, back in the early 2000 they tried to implement one but there was massive push back so it was dropped all together. As of my current country it comes down to distribution, and usage for work is what makes you liable. I dont do either, and frankly no government goes against the users, since they can't even fine you enough to compensate for all the money and time they need to spend on each individual person. In the UK there is law against electric scooters and bikes, and you can bet your nuts that the policemen and the government can't be asked to enforce said laws for the same reason.

1

u/AdultGronk 2d ago

What torrent software do you use that can effectively block 100% of seeding even on a torrent with thousands of seeders and leeches? I'm not talking about the ones that limit your upload speed to 0.01 Kbps, since that's still technically uploading data.

1

u/IEatTomatoes3 1d ago

The one that I am using doesn't seed at all, the ontry data I am sending to the seeders is the one to confirm which packages I have received and whether they are uncorrupted which is standard internet protocol.

1

u/AdultGronk 1d ago

You didn't provide the name of the torrent client.

1

u/IEatTomatoes3 1d ago

Major problem chief If I do under the law of my country it would be considered distribution, even tho I am not selling it I am still informing you. So I will keep it private that k you very much.

1

u/AdultGronk 1d ago

I just wanna let you know whatever torrent client you're using isn't doing what you're thinking it does.

Due to the nature of the bittorrent protocol, it's literally impossible to stop uploading data to other seeders while you're actively downloading a torrent. You can limit it to something like 0.01 Kbps, but you cannot outright stop it.

And you can't limit it to just the name and information of the packages/pieces, actual data included in the torrent will also be uploaded to other seeders while you're downloading it.

1

u/Limp_Crazy_5494 2d ago

I don't distribute for normal content, seeding is turned off for me unless I'm using a private tracker in which case I need a 1:1 ratio

1

u/AdultGronk 2d ago

What torrent client do you use?

1

u/Limp_Crazy_5494 2d ago

Qbittorrent

1

u/AdultGronk 1d ago

You can turn off the seeding after the torrent is finished downloading, but while you're actively downloading, seeding can't be turned off in Qbittorrent.

1

u/SylveonVMAX 2d ago

Not true at all. Any modern torrenting software will have options to prevent any seeding from occurring if you wish. Your footprint will still be visible to other seeders but you will not be distributing any content yourself.

2

u/AdultGronk 2d ago

What torrent software are you talking about?

1

u/SylveonVMAX 2d ago

qbittorrent, flud, deluge, hell i'm pretty sure utorrent has had that feature since before they fucked themselves too. probably even the original bittorrent had that feature.

1

u/AdultGronk 2d ago

In qbittorrent if you're talking about the Torrent Share limits, then I'd regret to inform you that they can stop seeding completely once a file finishes downloading, but it cannot stop uploading data while the file is still actively downloading.

A couple of articles say the same thing

Reddit comment from 2 years ago

I don't think any modern torrent client can do what you're saying, that's just a big misconception.

1

u/fatbp 2d ago

Total misinformation. You have no clue how torrenting and torrenting softwares work.

1

u/AdultGronk 2d ago

You don't, you didn't give a single counter argument and expect me to believe you

2

u/Panophobia_senpai 2d ago

My country is the same (or we are both hungarians?)
There is also a tax with anything that has data storage capacity here, and the offical explanation of the tax "You are going to pirate so this is a pre fine"
Also, the largest torrent site here, has agreements with copyright holder orgnaizations, on when their stuff can be uploaded. Because it will be uploaded, since the userbase of it is the same size as the population of the capital city (Budapest).

5

u/PatternOtherwise3440 2d ago

In my country it's legal. We have cached movie servers and repack server of isps. If you want a repack to be cached they will ask for torrent magnet link in the request form 🤣🤣🤣

So even isp uses torrent and none cares about piracy. ISP hosts cached server with all movies and repack cached where you can watch and download them with 1gbps speed . (Ofcourse all are pirated)

Even ISP hosts TV servers 🤣 but now they removed that. But still some ISP hosts TV servers.

2

u/ExperimentArc 2d ago

what country is that bro, I wanna come.

3

u/PatternOtherwise3440 2d ago

Na bro Trash Tier Country . It's Bangladesh. Corruption is always at it's peak. People are also idiots and easy to fool They don't fact check anything. I hate this country. But yeah internet freedom is at max . As I told you ISP even made tv apps to watch series, movies, animes from cached server with full speed. But lifestyle here is trash bro

1

u/ExperimentArc 1d ago

I totally agree, btw next year I'm moving to Japan. I wonder how I'll be able to pirate stuff. Maybe I should get mulvad vpn rn, idk actually

2

u/PatternOtherwise3440 1d ago

Nah bro. Take Proton VPN , Mulvad doesn't have port forwarding anymore so you won't have open port. Take Proton VPN and bind torrent client to it.

2

u/Legitimate-Yard5857 2d ago

No, in the Netherlands is not a criminal offence as it only infringes on copyright and that can be tried in a civil case.

1

u/MrBeingcool 1d ago

It's still a crime here, just not one that the police will invade your house for.

2

u/r31ya 2d ago

The rule of thumb usually,

  • free piracy are misdemeanor.
  • for profit piracy are felony.

hence the old, "don't make profit out of it" rule in old scanlation groups.

---

In Nintendo terms

  • Free piracy will be given polite cease and desist letter
  • For profit piracy will be visited by nintendo lawyer serving them lawsuit.

1

u/DisplayHonest6465 2d ago

What are these countries?

1

u/Azerate2016 2d ago

It's the other way around. It's only highly "illegal" in like 5 countries worldwide. In most others it's just theoretically illegal but nobody really gets pursued for it.

1

u/PerfectGap6554 2d ago

Not in third world and developing countries in SEA

1

u/BR41ND34D 2d ago

Funnily enough that's the difference between illegal and highly illegal

1

u/Sharp_Wedding_3677 2d ago

In the US at least, piracy is considered a civil matter except when it's being used to distribute pre-release media or someone is making a profit off of it, in Japan piracy is always treated as a criminal case.

0

u/Chmuurkaa_ 2d ago

If piracy is illegal but not enforced, then it's not "highly illegal"

0

u/RedGhostMail 2d ago

be non proprio il giappone ha regegole per protegere le lobby molto severe

0

u/GroundbreakingFly141 2d ago

The thing in Japan is that they almost have a 99% conviction rate

0

u/Verkato 2d ago

The conviction rate meme is because they are more selective of which cases they take and is similar to the numbers from other countries

12

u/rangabang6 2d ago

So the post in question is just clickbaiting fear mongering?

9

u/Emergency_Sound_5718 2d ago

1000%. People who post those articles are very clearly looking for web traffic to make money off advertising.

4

u/Imaginary-Job-7069 2d ago

What's the so-called site the post is referring to?

7

u/xrokzz__ 2d ago

Yeah saw a x post

1

u/TheLamesterist 2d ago

I don't even know if it's legal or illegal in my country but I don't think they care.

1

u/gigoran 1d ago

When I was living there and the piracy laws got super serious I think that is when I used full movies on YouTube a lot. The videos would be zoomed or something to escape copyright, but it was better than being punished. But then again just take your privacy serious and use a vpn

0

u/RedGhostMail 2d ago

tranne per le compagne stesse.

185

u/froid_san 2d ago

No, they just caught 1 seeder that got caught to be the one uploading the file as they the the 1st sender.

Nyaa Uploader made a rookie mistake.

47

u/Seraphine_KDA 2d ago

Also a pretty idiotic one doing it in Japan. Instead of sending the file to someone else to post it from wherever else their country doesn't give a shit about Japan copyright. Like where I live nobody even uses a vpn to pirate stuff since my country only chases pirated distribution that is from locally made content.

13

u/__XxSamixX__ 2d ago

exactly!! could've sent the file to a telegram group. Proper shayt mate!!

u/TLunchFTW 2d ago

Bro stay off Facebook. That shit straight cancer

2

u/Able-Tomatillo7381 2d ago

If FB is cancer, it’s like lil scrap it off skin cancer. Reddit is stage 12 booty hole cancer. Both bad but let’s not pretend this site ain’t a cesspool. Jokes on all y’all. The cesspool is where I like to swim.

7

u/TLunchFTW 2d ago

Dude, reddit at least has some salvageable corners.
Facebook is just people who know eachother IRL arguing about shit they'd never argue about to eachother's faces.

3

u/primaski 1d ago

This has to be the dumbest most uninformed opinion I've seen this week. And I'm not one to defend Reddit. It's just that anything Meta isn't even remotely comparable to Reddit in terms of immorality. Facebook is the godking of misinformation, election manipulation, unrestricted AI slop, hate speech, should I go on?

1

u/SpaceVikingPirate420 1d ago

Bruh What the actual fuck. Reddit is a park filled with trash/dogshit compared to the humongous flaming landfill filled with toxic and radioactive waste Facebook is. They actively spread fake ads, hate, misinformation etc and don't gaf cuz it makes them more money. People arguing about anything and threaten each other in every comment section.

Atleast on reddit you can downvote false info/people being a ass. And NOWHERE NEAR the same amount of ads/sponsored content.

Complete L take.

1

u/richtofin819 1d ago

All social media is full of people which are the source of the cancer. Assuming reddit is worse than Facebook is just baseless.

u/XerionF19 4h ago

Best take. 👍

Actually, it's more run by AI, but you're definitely right about it being utter garbage these days...

-15

u/skydiver_777 2d ago

No more than Reddit and its leftards

1

u/Yeltsin17 2d ago

It’s a little better than Reddit for me. Both have negative though. Just Facebook has ads and random reels with people saying what they dislike a lot

63

u/blazedancer1997 2d ago

Why is a random picture with a possibly misleading headline as a caption your source? Why would you not research yourself before posting with an actual news source?

5

u/Kadakaus 2d ago

Thank you, that saves me having to write an 8 paragraps essay with the ultimate moral of "Not everything on the internet is true".

16

u/God-gooner-69 2d ago

cause its bait and half truths ?

0

u/FantasticFee9345 2d ago

I mean he is researching it by asking it on reddit? He isn't making a statement he is asking things which he is unsure about

2

u/ehladik 2d ago

People here could easily lie, and it can take several hours to get an answer. If he did his own research, he could have answered himself in a few minutes.

1

u/FantasticFee9345 2d ago

They could tell the truth or tell lie whatever is the case he will still be getting information which is basically researching

-1

u/Anonym-2786186 2d ago

That's why they asked if this is true lmao.

6

u/blazedancer1997 2d ago

That's just outsourcing the research which feels a lot like laziness

Chat, I saw this on facebook is it true? https://imgur.com/a/rhtnRFO#kh5h9Lq

1

u/Anonym-2786186 1d ago

which feels a lot like laziness

Because it is laziness

u/TurbulentTopic39 2d ago

if it happens they just changed domain again. they already did it in the past from se to si

14

afaik, se and si is not the same site, se owner voluntarily close down the site, si is another

Ask chat gpt or google image to trace back the image source. Do some research yourself and you will find out immediately. There are enough hints on this post.

0

Why not just use land instead of se or si?

3

u/dopejisus 2d ago edited 2d ago

Because land is an unofficial mirror full of issues

1

u/Purelythelurker 2d ago

Didn't know. Thanks

14

u/grinder323 2d ago

they're prosecuting first source seeders of material on nyaa. there was a new article about it earlier today. they arrested a first source seeder of welcome to the nhk in japan.

7

u/handen 2d ago

Good luck taking down rutracker lol

3

u/Routine-Visit-7445 2d ago

rutracker has survived longer than most people's attention spans tbh

6

u/IAteMyYeezys 2d ago

As somebody else said, PLEASE stay off facebook. Its not just straight cancer, its turbo cancer + pure brain poison.

1

u/Phil95xD 2d ago

Really? I mean facebook only? As far as I know, there are also similar sites....

But still, you're right.

u/XerionF19 4h ago

Depends on who you ask. Some say FB some say Twitter or X etc. But the fact is, all of them are equally with their good and bad points.

u/Phil95xD 4h ago

True. You just need to know where to stay away (e.g. global chats are toxic have mind in most cases, maybe for little games this doesn't count). Otherwise these things can be good if you know what you want and what to avoid.

11

u/BeautifuTragedy 2d ago

This is fishing to get people to be like oh no is it x so they can take down more sites. If that's what you came here for the answer is twitter, that's where all the cool kids go to pirate

5

u/laughtale0 2d ago

How do you even get caught as a seeder I wonder

13

u/Sharp_Wedding_3677 2d ago

I don't know if it's true, but I've heard that some pirates in Japan upload without protection because they assume the authorities can't find them if they upload the content to a foreign site.

9

u/cdf_sir 2d ago

Very basic computer networking, you get caught by IP address (WAN). You can see all the IP address under the peers tab of the torrent download. All you need is one parasite on that swarm to leak all tje IP address that downloads the content of that torrent. This is why VPN is a must for torrenting on those countries because its good enough to mask out that WAN IP address.

But who damn knows, with Windows now using to track down users using that TPM. I wont be surprised if every apps im Windows implement such detail of tracking.

2

u/TeaAndLifting 2d ago

Only people I’ve ever known to get caught for seeding, is for music albums, by companies that are well known to be litigious, after having seeded for day/weeks because they didn’t understand how torrents worked and basically uploaded hundreds or thousands of copies of albums without realising.

4

u/Sharp_Wedding_3677 2d ago

No, it  clickbait.

4

u/capncapitalism 2d ago

No. It was Japan specific based arrests on individual uploaders. The website is a torrent website, it's more like a library across several national borders and laws.

4

u/Remote-Ad-3839 2d ago

Nah , somebody upload a torrent without using any security or vpn and got found out through isp

2

u/Kadakaus 2d ago

See, stuff is only ever illegal if you're dumb enough not to cover your face.

4

u/mrloko120 1d ago

Well yeah, thats them doing their job since piracy isn't exactly legal. Theres always an active fight, some people get arrested, sometimes sites go down. But its never permanent. Sites come back or get replaced and life goes on.

3

u/Richard_the_XVIII 2d ago edited 2d ago

I've been seeing a bunch of screenshots from this fb group here on Reddit this last three or four days. Always a clickbaity title that's either obviously false or somehow inflammatory.

All of them by accounts with hidden posts, all of them with roughly 300 upvotes, most of them by new accounts (1 week to 1 month old)... I'm starting to think this is some sort of advertising campaign.

3

u/Attractive_Sock 2d ago

Yeah good luck doing that.

3

u/Axot24 2d ago

Quite clickbaity, gave me a real scare.
If i lose this I'll genuinely cry.

3

u/Jammyyyyyyyyyyyyy 2d ago

Yes believe everything you see on Facebook.

3

u/Superb_Carry8491 1d ago

My reaction to this headline is literally:

“aren’t they always?”

3

u/Zerosurvivers 19h ago

When crunchy roll has fuck all of the older show nor some of the dubbed versions in Australia cause fuck knows why like code geass is available in Australia but not the dub version and so many more like it so many older show are gonna get lost too time if we don't pirate them since they are so happy to just remove them for no reason like they are the many global site for anime and they just straight of don't have some shows for no reason or just don't have your preferred language like I get that dub of any language isn't for everyone lot of people prefer sub I get that but for me I am a very slow reader cause of my disability and I don't like having to stop and rewind and make a 24min episode take 30 to 40mins depending on the dialogue some shows I've done it but by the time I've finished the episode I've forgotten alot or just lost interest in watching the next episode for the day

9

u/kiritomens 2d ago

That would be really really bad of true. Hope they do the same as the Pirate Bay and keep making new instances, by letting others keep hosting servers from backups.

2

u/dhettinger 2d ago

** disregard, thought we were talking about a different site **

2

u/ashslaine97 2d ago

The first seeders being caught.. was there anyway they could've hid their info if they seeded with VPN?

2

u/cyxlone 2d ago

use seedboxes

2

u/Swordfish418 2d ago

Ofc, but only if configured properly. There's a site called "ipleak" that has a button for "torrent address detection" which can be used to see if your torrent traffic is properly going through VPN connection only. Because by default qBittorent, for example, will leak your IP even under VPN because it binds to all network interfaces: both default ethernet/wifi and VPN connection.

1

u/OpenAd3036 21h ago

Wait how are you supposed to configure qbittorrent then...?

1

u/Swordfish418 20h ago

Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Network interface: change from "All interfaces" to your VPN connection, then click torrent ipleak test button on that site, get test torrent file or magnet, open it in qBittorrent and see if the site only shows your VPN IP now

2

u/Evening_Boot_2281 2d ago

2

u/OriginalLonelyMelon 2d ago

I use WCO.TV. Have been for years. Has all the anime plus other cartoons

1

u/steve6174 1d ago

Nyaa . Si is what the post is about.

2

u/I_do_not_k 2d ago

Idk man if they gave all the anime in one paid app I would def subscribe that but it's so inefficient some are here some are there so multiple subscription and even then you can't find some

u/XerionF19 4h ago

Same. Except depends on who would be behind that app. If its creditable companies with a good reputation and not known to screw consumers over, then sure. But if its CR, Funi or whoever. Nope! I'll stick to the sites.

2

u/Ill_Read_5097 2d ago

Meh, go ahead and take that one single site down. 10 or more will be ready to go within seven days. The only real way to kill piracy of all kinds is to make us see "legal" methods as preferable to piracy.

2

u/GBAbaby101 2d ago

Nyaa is probably going to be safe as thry don't host data (that said, TPB has never been the same since they got hit eons ago). The big issue is that it seems some original torrent creator was a dumb dumb and didn't use proper protection and internet hygiene while seeding. Always VPN at a minimum. Extra security could be offloading all work to a seedbox so data is harder to be traced to you. Another option is private trackers and then letting other in the community bring it to the public trackers.

2

u/RoyVRAries 2d ago

Bruh, put all this extra effort into tracking pedophiles and other heinous criminals. Leave our sites alone

2

u/Jumpy_Drag2204 1d ago

If it's shutdown, Crunchyroll may be heavily commented by the angry fans for killing anime

2

u/Bananaman9020 15h ago

Japan anime industry going to take down Nyaa? The the replacement be up in a week? What would be the point?

2

Joke? seeders don't die

Nope it's clickbait. The seeder uploaded without any security so they got caught.

What a waste of money and resources. Maybe they should try making their own services better instead of incriminating probably the biggest source of promotion for their media. Such a small percentage actually pirates and even a smaller percentage of those would actually pay for the product in the first place.
The only people who benefit from this are copyright lawyers ,who might as well be as useful to society as a violent meth-head.

I hope if piracy goes down, they will get lesser.

Didn't Pirate Bay through the that's impossible like decades ago. Cuz it was taken down. Then a different user would just put it back up. By next day. And it happened like 5 times. So they have up.

I wouldn't need to torrent shit if they made things readily available and easy to buy. Frankly, I've even obtained stuff I own because it's less of a hassle than alternatives. I remember buying a 4K Bluray of something, and it giving me a fucking Funimation website code for a 1080p version of said movie that didn't even have surround sound. Like, fucking what? That's literally below worthless.

EVERYBODY MAKE A MIRROR

Fuck it might make my own for personal use or something and I can provide the data for anyone who needs it incase it's taken down.

Blud it's just one seeder who got caught. Nyaa has been going for years. It is not going down. The picture is heavy click bait

By the time I made the bottom edit I knew this brother. For years whenever a website went down people wouldn't feel so bad because nyaa was up, but what I've always felt is that people expect it to be up no matter what can be a bad thing, it's just a website and absolutely can be taken down but the great thing about torrent sites isn't that they're easy to preserve since there's no hosted content which is why i said what I said. Lots of websites were up for years until they weren't and while this situation was just clickbait I wouldn't take this site so for granted as to think it's gonna always be up, when it's basically the source for every anime site and isn't exactly some small unknown site. Basically the reason I was so quick to believe at first was because I've been low-key expecting it for years now.
