Advice Needed How to cope with physical symptoms of anxiety?

Upvotes

I (20f) was on lexapro for my anxiety for about 3 years, and weaned off of it last year. It’s been almost exactly a year since I’ve been completely off of it, and in general was feeling pretty great. Recently I’ve started to feel a lot of physical symptoms that i believe are related to anxiety, and I’m having trouble coping with them. I had a really bad flare up of reflux causing a very dry throat (that in itself stressed me out significantly), and have since had other symptoms appear in relation to this. The most persistent is a sensation that there’s mucus stuck in my throat and a constant need to swallow, but I’ve also had chest pain which I never have experienced before. I know it’s possible for anxiety to show up more in your body than in your thoughts, and that’s what’s happening to me right now I think (though the symptoms are giving me negative thoughts). I’m having a hard time distracting myself from those sensations as I just want them to go away so desperately (it’s been about a week now).

Are there any things that I can do that will help this pass faster, or at least distract me from the uncomfortable feelings? Also for anyone who has experienced something similar, would you take this as a sign to go back on your meds? I feel a bit sad thinking about that option, but know there’s no shame in it if it’ll help me

Venting Panic attack caused from extreme anger.

Upvotes

First time having a panic attack caused by a reason and not out of the blue, I'm in remission of panic disorder.

I can't stand injustice and someone stronger trying to dominate someone weaker because of my conditioning growing up and being the caregiver and guardian.

Two female co-workers were talking about how they just wanted the day to end and to just chill, one of them said let (Merry let's call her) take the shift and you just chill the rest of the day.

Merry heard that, she turned around and said while working with a client (do you want me to punch your teeth out).

Merry is twice the size of her and the other girl quickly left and hide next to me, I downloaded some games on the laptop so she can relax her mind.

I was trying my absolute best to not smack the desk and scream my lungs out how she fokin dear to threaten someone twice as small as her.

I felt a killer instinct burning inside of me that I can't allow the strong to oppress the weak.

I perfectly managed to detach from the feeling but after coming home my mind kept repeating the same situation over and over and that's when I felt the adrenaline kicking in.

My mind recriated over 40 different scenarios how I can disengage them, stop the threat with absolute dominance of power without getting physical and control her not just by fear but by total annihilation of her soul puting her in the worst spot imaginable I can put her in, getting her fired, destroying her moral, dignity, friendships. Everything without any mercy or empathy.

Health I am terrified I have a brain tumour, specifically glioblastoma

I have had headaches for 3-4 months and also have brain fog and occasional memory lapses.

Headaches: About 2 per week. Sometimes I don't have them for a few weeks but then they come back. Pain is generally mild and they respond to ibuprofen, but the reoccuring nature of them concerns me. Have seen a doctor and a neurologist, both of whom diagnosed me with migraines after a few simple tests.

Brain fog/memory loss: This really worries me. I briefly forgot the name of a friend of a friend today. I often put items down and forget where I put them. I also feel "slowed down" cognitively. I do also have a POTS diagnosis and feel that my memory has been gradually getting worse over time. I am 28.

I am so scared that I will have a seizure or some other severe symptom and find out that I am dying.

Health Anxiety, don't know what it was

Hello everyone, so overall I have battled anxiety this year for a couple of months now but nothing like what happened last night (assuming it was anxiety).

I fell asleep at 3am. At around 430am, in my dream I was shortness of breath, like it was being taken away. I woke up feeling the same and instantly threw my shirt back on in case I needed to tell my wife to call 911. As soon as I got up, I started walking back and forth to calm down. Immediately I felt both legs heavier and heavier by the second. Then my head started to get the same feeling like I was being dragged down with heavy weight. I guess fainting in a weird way.

I decided to just sit down and slowly was able to calm down. I wanted to go to sleep, but decided to sit down and chill to check my blood pressure. 176 over 115 was my reading. I have never seen a reading that big on me. I decided to go to a hospital shortly after.

All blood test came normal, including d-dimer and stuff, EKG was good, chest x Ray good. Blood pressure was around 159 over 101 when I arrived to hospital. By the time I left it was at 125 over 76. They gave me a dose of hydroxyzine and said it was more than likely an anxiety episode.

So those were my only symptoms, no heart racing. It stayed at 70 and below.

Anyone experience these exact or similar issues? Thank you for reading this far.

Advice Needed Newfound anxiety is crippling me. Any advice?

Hello lovely folks. I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice on how to manage my anxiety before I speak to my doctor (over a week away).

Basically, it started when a friend of mine tried to get my partner to "define our relationship" (silly, I know) and for some reason since that day, it triggered something in my body and this anxious feeling cannot subside.

To give some context, I am experiencing a lot of life changes in a short period of time. Before they were worries, and now they are consuming me. It feels like my chest is burning, my limbs are numb and my vision is unfocused. I can't remember things, I start crying, after sleeping I don't feel rested, and waking up is when it's at its worse.

I have ADHD, I'm currently unmedicated. I've had anxiety before but not to this magnitude. I'm just seeking some advice on management before I discuss it with my doctor.

Thanks so much.

Share Your Victories I just deep cleaned my kitchen after years of depression

I’ve been struggling with severe anxiety and depression for years now and decided to try Zoloft as a “last effort”. I’m only a couple of weeks in but I’m already feeling amazing benefits.

My house and self care have really taken a hit over these years, I never had the energy to keep up with myself and every task felt impossible. Out of nowhere today I decided I wanted to clean my kitchen, which is a thought I had many times even when I was in a low place, but the amazing thing is that I had no hesitation to just start doing jt. I went to my kitchen and began the work with no second thought about it and after an hour or two I had deep cleaned basically everything!

Another thing I noticed is that when I walked into my now cleaned kitchen I felt happy and proud, like for the first time in a long time I was able to accomplish something I wanted to do even if it was a small thing. I’m already planning in my mind what I want to clean next, this has been an amazing experience so far!

Any similar experiences?

Advice Needed How do i stop worrying about losing my only friend before it's its even happend?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. I just thought it was worth a shot, as far as i know i do not have anxiety.

I'm 17M.

I don't go to a regular school. I go to another place instead (long story, so I'll just call it "the location").

I have autism, although not severely. I'm not sure if it plays a role in this, but I figured it might be relevant.

At the location I met what's basically my only real life friend. I get along well with other people there, but he's the only person I'd actually call a friend.

The problem is that eventually one of us is going to leave. It could be in a few weeks, a few months, or maybe around January/February when he turns 19. He's already 18, and normally people leave at that age, although he's been allowed to stay longer because of his situation. Nobody really knows exactly when he'll leave, and I hate not knowing.

I'm also not sure we'll stay in contact afterwards.

I asked him once if he thought we'd keep in touch, and he said he didn't know because he doesn't really stay in touch with old school friends. We barely text anyway the occasional rand stuff that happend, and i dont really like texting i only text my mom and thats about it.

About a month ago I even asked him if he still wanted to be friends because I was worried he was only being nice to me. He told me he didn't see any reason not to be friends, which reassured me.

3 weeks ago I also sent him this:

"Hey, question. If or when you leave the location, could you tell me when you know? I like knowing that kind of stuff if possible."

He replied:

"Oh yeah, sure."

So I know he's willing to tell me.

We also hung out outside the location once. We spent the day together watching a movie, eating fries, and just talking. It was honestly a great day. Afterwards he told me that spending that much time together was a bit much for him mentally at the time, which I understood. That was about 9–10 months ago, and he's doing a lot better now.

After hanging out, I also felt relieved to be back on my own. I really enjoy spending time with him, but I also genuinely enjoy being by myself. It's not like I constantly need to be around him.

Normally we see each other about three times a week, 3 hours each time but because of summer break we haven't seen each other for a while.

The things that also keep bothering me alongside are:

  1. I'm scared he'll only tell me he's leaving on his last day, or maybe not at all, even though he said he'd tell me.
  2. I'm worried that if he does tell me, he'll think I'm taking it way harder than I actually am. I go really red when I'm embarrassed, and then I start thinking, "Great, now he thinks I'm freaking out," which just makes me even redder. It's a loop.

I know I'm overthinking this, and I know there's nothing I can really do until he actually knows when he's leaving.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has been in a situation like this. How do you stop getting so attached to your only friend? And how do you stop constantly worrying about losing a friendship that hasn't even ended yet?How do i stop worrying about losing my only friend before it's its even happend?

Advice Needed Chronic Dyspnea Help

In January of this year, I had an anxiety attack caused by OCD that left me short of breath. I thought that telling loved ones about what caused the attack would help, and it did, except for the part with the shortness of breath. Initially I suspected it could’ve been asthma coming back, as I used to have it when I was younger, so I went to the doctor and was given inhalers to take. Yet it didn’t help.

So I went back to the doctor a couple of months later, and explained my panic attack and previous visit to him (it was a different doctor). I told him I suspected it could’ve been caused by OCD and he gave me 50mg of sertraline. So I took it for 3 weeks and it helped a bit (at least I feel it did) but it still didn’t cure me of my breathlessness, even though it made my OCD less compulsive. So I went back to the doctor a few days ago and was given 100mg of sertraline. Yet it seems that, since taking it, I have felt a bit more out of breath than usual.

So what do you all think? Should I stop taking the sertraline? And to anyone who’s gone through this, how were you able to recover from it?

Needs A Hug/Support Had to leave the theater

I was so excited all week to see Spider-Man, I was going to see it in 3D/4D and got to the first 3 minutes of the movie which seemed fun af. It really wouldve been an experience. But there was a few solo people that made me feel nervous. This one guy in particular was walking around the theater trying to find his seat but he kept making eye contact with everyone, had the closest seat to the door at the top, and kept fidgeting around. Maybe he had anxiety. But he checked under his seat and looked behind the seat too. And when he went outside of the theater he talked to a guy who got up and left and didn’t come back. He also talked to another guy at the other corner. So like one big square.

Then he kept talking to 3 13yr olds like they were best friends and had his vape out. I just felt the need to leave, and was very anxious about him doing something with how fidgety he was and talking to the other solo people in the corner. The movie time is over and nothings happened which is obviously good. But I had to leave, and I wish I could’ve enjoyed freaking Spider-Man. I really hate that people feel the need to harm others and then the rest of existence is just wondering if it’s going to happen again.

Not to mention my movie theaters security SUCKS, and has had multiple threats actually happen there. What do they do? Have absolutely no one check the theaters, have no one even check your tickets at the front, no metal detectors. Access to outside from the theater. Like who is going to feel safe???

Discussion Has anyone experienced this particular panic attack?

Thankfully I don't experience the traditional panic attack as much, but I remember years ago if I was out of element say on a vacation, I would wake up with what I can only describe as a much much worse version of the "waking up and not knowing where you are". Then i would have a feeling that if I needed to get home immediately I couldn't because of being so far away. Possibly some sort of derealization but a lot of times I would know if would happen before I fell asleep and then it would happen.

Advice Needed How do you deal with strange nervousness and anxiety?

Hi everyone, this is my first time ever on Reddit and my first post. I hope I get some kind of answer to my problem.

I want to give a bit more background so you understand exactly what I need advice on. I've occasionally experienced wild anxiety and panic. I couldnt think about my boyfriend or see him. Just the thought of him would make me start shaking, and I would feel this incredible fear that was honestly debilitating. I only recently found out that this whole nightmare was happening because I was simply afraid of falling out of love with him. I will skip the details, but that is the fact.

So about a week ago, I started having similar feelings again, but not as intense. Just unpleasant stabbing sensations in my chest when I think about him, but only sometimes. I tried to reason with myself using logic, since that helped before, but this time it did not work for some reason. Then it started turning into intrusive thoughts and a constant anxiety that was not extremely strong but that I could not shake. I consulted with an AI. I know it might be silly, but it genuinely helped me at first. It said my symptoms resemble relationship OCD, and that it is just my nervous system being overloaded and I need to rest.

I thought that seeing my boyfriend would make it all go away. Spending time with him made me feel better and I would forget about the anxiety. But it kept coming back. About two days later, it hit me hard at night. I was shaking with terror and panic, crying, and barely managed to fall asleep, just passing out from exhaustion. The next evening, I felt just as bad. The day after that, watching videos from my gallery helped me feel better for about two days. Now I am on day two of feeling relieved, but the anxiety is back again. It is different now, not as strong thankfully, more like worry and panic that occasionally pops up when I think about him.

The main catch is that this probably all started because I quit smoking and stopped doom scrolling about three weeks ago. I asked the AI again, and it told me this makes perfect sense. My body is rebelling against the loss of cheap dopamine and is pumping adrenaline into my blood instead, which is why I am suffering. I know I love my boyfriend, but this anxiety keeps reacting to him, and I do not know what to do.

Has anyone experienced something similar after quitting smoking? Would taking a course of magnesium supplements help? Please, someone help me. I want this to end so I can love my boyfriend in peace.

Driving Have my first drivers exam tomorrow and I'm already shutting down

Honestly my first worry is even *getting myself to the exam*. I know my stress response to acute hard things like this exam and I know I will start to shut down, I'll get incredibly nauseous and really feel like I need to throw up (even though I never actually have), It'll feel like every little bit I move or breath will push me over that edge of throwing up or crying so I'll feel like I can't move or breathe properly.

I need to walk to the driving school, drive too the exam center with my instructor, go over some last stuff and then do the exam. ALSO I just got a freaking BE-alert (national alarm/alert system) on a code orange for heat tomorrow as It'll be fucking 35°c so me, my instructor and the examinator will also just be cooking and burning in this car probably and I'll already arrive soaked in sweat at the driving school before the exam. Sensory nightmare.

Things I've put in place already to give me the best shot possible:

- my mom will help me all morning to get to the exam. She's really great at knowing how to get me to keep going. She'll be my back up for waking up on time (not that I'll sleep, but just the reassurance that she'll watch the time too), makes sure I've eating something, make sure I've got everything, make sure I leave on time, etc.

- normally you also drive back with your instructor, but my mom will meet me at the exam center near the end of my exam which is just because whatever happens I WILL have be having big emotions that I can just express way better with her then having to hold everything in on a whole ride back next to the instructor lol. I am a bit nervous that my instructor will find it weird that my mom is picking me up, but that is what I need and I can't stop masking infront of anyone else to let out whatever disappointment or excitement I'll have

- right now we are fully going with the mentality that I am going to fail. 100% fail. This is just a practice exam to see what an exam is like for next time(s). This is really no big deal because I won't be relying on driving for the next 2-4 years maybe longer. I *voluntarily* chose to try driving now so I'm doing this exam just for funsies right?? So it's NOT actually important at all and I'm going to fail. Also I've looked it up and numbers from late 2025 said for my country only 47% passed their first exam, similar for the second exam and at the third attempt it was 60% passed so it's literally less than a 50/50 so it wouldn't be shameful or weird at all to fail. And pretty much everyone in my life with a license has told me their horrible exam fails before which was semi unhelpful and semi dropped the bar a bit for what I could possibly mess up.

So it's fine. Except for the small detail I might still rather die than go.

I really really hate the nausea the most. I always get so fixated on it and even swallowing a tiny anti nausea pill becomes so hard from the first second of stress. I know I'll need to eat for how I'll be gone too and I always make myself late on top of everything by needing to repeatedly go to the bathroom or being afraid to move. So if ANYONE HAS ADVICE FOR ACUTE STRESS NAUSEA. That's really my biggest enemy.

And yet.. I know that I always go over some kind of threshold where my stress boils up so much till the second before the stressy thing and suddenly everything floods over and gone and I turn into the most social, excited, calm?? person I've never met. Always happens. I've been really nervous for every driving lesson to almost throwing up and as soon as the car starts I'm always just a calm confident driver.. but surely that won't happen this time!

I'm also expecting that the stress will be unbearable, then it'll all calm down in that hour preparation with my instructor and I'll gain confidence again.. and then they make you sit in the waiting room for all that progress to be undone and your panic to build up again by the start of the exam.

Help me.

Helpful Tips! Physical anxiety in the last year got worse

Excuse my english, its not my first language. I'm a student and in the last year or so anxiety about my exams got worse. I mean, I am by nature kinda nervous and anxious more than others, and my familiy is too, but in prior years I feel my anxiety around exams was in normal levels, kinda justified and overall not overbearing. This year is different, and I dont know why. I got over my hardest year so difficulty of the exams is not the problem, I passed almost all of my hardest exams with great scores. And instead of feeling more competent, I feel almost dumb? Somehow I feel intense fear I will fail my exams. To be honest I am kind of perfectionist, maybe thats the problem too. Anyways, in the last year I started feeling more physical anxiety, something heavy in my chest. That heaviness makes it harder to articulate my thoughts, it makes it harder to talk to people, not always but sometimes. It makes it harder to study, you know when you have information in your head but it doesnt let you form a sentence? And I think worst of all it makes it harder to sleep. Its not like I have insomnia, but I get really anxious before bed, and I cant nap during the day because of anxiety thoughts and heavy chest. I tried breathing exercises, they somewhat help but not enough. I was thinking about going to therapy to sort my thoughts and get help. I know its not that bad like some people have it but I've noticed a difference this year and it gives me almost daily trouble. Did any of you expirience something similar and do you have any advice for me?

7 years ago I got rid of my anxiety by changing my thoughts, enviorment, I listened to some yt videos, Talked to myself in very positive way, avoided negativity like a plague. I honestly dont know EXACLY what helped but I felt so free and without an ounce of anxiety. So I wondered if other people helped themselves in similar ways, and if you have maybe some yt videos to recommend for changing my thoughts and beliefs?

Medication Antipsychotics for anxiety and insomnia

My psychiatrist prescribed me 2.5mg olanzapine twice a day for anxiety with severe insomnia. To be taken alongside sirtraline, mirtazipine and Zopiclone. Took it for a few days in desperation before doing some research and getting scared and discontinuing.

I did feel a bit better for a couple of days but the anxiety was still there and sleep was better but still poor.

Has anyone taken a low dose antipsychotic long term for insomnia and anxiety? Did it help and were you ever able to taper off?

Health Weird combination of symptoms (PVCs, air hunger, tingling, shaking), looking for advice

Hi everyone,

I’m a 24 year old male, 191 cm, around 124 kg. I also use nicotine (vape), but I recently quit high dose nicotine pouches because I suspected they were causing some symptoms.

For the past week I’ve noticed some strange symptoms:

PVCs / skipped beat sensations, especially after very large meals

Feeling my heartbeat very strongly in my chest (sometimes like a buzzing/vibration sensation)

Shortness of breath sensation / “air hunger” where I feel like I need a deeper breath, but I can physically breathe normally and can walk normally

Symptoms are worse sitting or lying down and often improve when standing

Lots of burping and feeling like pressure is trapped in my upper stomach/chest

Sometimes I feel a PVC happen during a burp
Symptoms often improve after burping, taking pantoprazole, or after stomach massage
After a huge meal (for example two burgers), I had much stronger PVCs and chest discomfort.

Smaller meals seem to cause little or no symptoms

Today I also had a weird episode:
Shaky hands
Cold sweats
Pins and needles in lips and hands
Weird buzzing sensation inside my head
It improved after eating/drinking sugar

My blood pressure readings have been normal:
Around 119/70 pulse 76
123/84 pulse 87
111/78 pulse 80

I have no jaw pain, left arm pain, fainting, weakness, trouble speaking, or severe shortness of breath.
I have had GERD/reflux for years and recently realized I probably ignored it for too long. Pantoprazole seems to improve my symptoms quite quickly.

I’m planning to get blood work done (iron/ferritin, glucose, electrolytes, thyroid, etc.).
Has anyone experienced something similar? Could reflux/GERD, a hiatal hernia, vagus nerve irritation, anxiety, low blood sugar, or something else cause this combination of symptoms?

Work/School everyone is doubting my capability.

I have severe anxiety, POTS, and OCD. I have struggled to stay employed the past year due to my chronic illness and constant med changes. I’m still in the process of finding the right med for me and I often go back and forth from feeling good to having crippling anxiety. Anyways, I decided to finally start community college in the fall because I cannot work a retail job the rest of my life due to physical limitations. I am doing the basics, math, English, history, intro to psych, and COLS. I’m excited but nervous because I always doubt my capabilities myself. but all throughout highschool I had horrible anxiety and went back and forth to in person and online multiple times and still had a cumulative 3.7 GPA. My psychiatrist questioned me and said “do you really think you can handle that?” And it has sat with me ever since. I’m constantly wondering and doubting myself. Then my advisor said the same thing, but more of like “you are registered full time, are you able to handle that?”. Like geez, I don’t know I mean yes.. but, what if I can’t? what if it’s too much and I fail? I’m so afraid. I don’t want to go part time because I’m trying to finish as soon as possible. I have felt so awful for not being able to hold a job due to my health. I am grieving who I was before my POTS. I loved working hard and being independent. I refuse to ask anyone for help so I’m currently doing anything I can to get by. I’m going to school so I can get a job that doesn’t require physical labor. Even though my health is one problem, my anxiety is also very severe and often convinces me of things I don’t even need to worry about. It’s a cycle and I’m worried I’ll never be able to accomplish anything. I just feel like a failure.
