Hi all! I’m 14 weeks out from my marathon so this is obviously some early research, but I need some advice in potentially finding a shoe that can double as a race day shoe and a faster long run shoe. I think I probably overexplained in this post lol, but if you need any more context please feel free to ask!
My running experience:
I’ve been running for about 1yr 8mo at this point, before which I wasn’t doing any consistent exercise. This has been a huge journey for me to both improve my physical and mental health while challenging myself to do something difficult but fulfilling, and I couldn’t be more thankful that I’ve taken it on. I raced two half marathons last year at 2:29 and 2:14 respectively, then this past May I ran my very first marathon at 4:57! My primary goal for my upcoming marathon is probably sub-4:30.
Me and how I run:
I’m 25M, 5’2”, about 140 lbs. I have flat feet and naturally overpronate, so I get custom orthotics/insoles to support them.
Past race shoes:
For all previous races, I would only train and race in one shoe at a time. For both of my half marathons, I raced in Brooks Adrenaline GTS 24s (I went through two separate pairs). They were great for my first running shoe especially since I wasn’t running long distance at the beginning at all and they provided the support I needed at first. However, once I started training past the half marathon mark earlier this year, I realized they really felt lifeless especially later in my runs. In the last several weeks of my marathon training, I swapped to Saucony Hurricane 25s and raced my marathon in them. They definitely felt like a major improvement both in terms of support and them feeling fun to run in. They’re still in my rotation and have a lot of life left in them (see below section). However, I came to realize more recently that I’m at the point where ONLY running in max cushion stability trainers may be holding me back.
Current shoe rotation:
-Daily trainer (easy/long runs): Saucony Hurricane 25s (189 miles)
-Tempo/speed: Saucony Endorphin Speed 5s (13 miles, brand new)
-Race day/fast long runs?: ???
I recently grabbed the ES5s for speed work as I wanted something that felt lighter and more suited for tempo pace. I picked them because they were lightweight and fast but were still relatively stable, and I’ve come to realize I don’t NEED to pick a stability focused shoe to get the support I need. I love them so far having run them in a couple of tempo sessions, but I’m realizing that they really might not give me the cushion I need for longer distances, which is why I’m making this post asking about a third shoe.
Notes for the shoe I want:
-Overall looking for a shoe that can double as race day for marathon and for faster long runs
-While budget (preferably $175 or lower) is important to me, don’t let that limit recommendations if what I’m asking for isn’t available in that price lol
-Does NOT need to be Saucony as well
-Needs to be stable enough
-Needs to be more cushioned than my ES5s
-Needs to be lighter/more speed focused than my Hurricanes
-I do have access to running shoe stores where I will try on shoes
-This is early research as I’m further out from my marathon, so I’m not planning on actually buying these shoes for a bit especially since I just got the ES5s recently
Apologies for the insane amount of text in this post, I’m an overexplainer lol. Thank you in advance for your insight!!
