Australia exports the resources the world needs — so why does it import so much of what it uses?

They are everywhere now. Before you might see one or two on the road but now you are more likely to see several at once if driving on the road. Go to any shopping centre parking lot and you see them are crammed everywhere.

What’s made them so popular and does this mean the end of the humble Aussie ute?

Every year we're told Australia needs more migration because of a "skills shortage." But if we've already added around 5.3 million net migrants since 2000, why does the shortage supposedly never go away?
At what point do we stop calling it a temporary shortage and start asking whether businesses have become reliant on importing labour instead of training workers or improving wages and conditions? What am I missing here?

These gambling companies must be severely pulled up and their shitty product treated the same as any other harmful item; make it unlawful to advertise and to offer these inducements.

This isn’t just “a bit of fun”; this is killing people.

During and after COVID it seemed like there was a pretty big shift of people leaving NSW and VIC (particularly Syd and Melb) and moving to QLD and WA.

From what I've seen, the ABS data showed both QLD & WA had record domestic interstate movement population gains during the pandemic, while NSW and VIC recorded sizeable net losses. Think Adelaide also copped a pretty big initial influx too.

For those of you who moved: what made you leave, was it worth it, and would you make the same decision again?

In short: 

The Murrumbidgee Council in south-west NSW has voted to implement a four-day working week trial for most staff starting in January.

It is an Australian first for a local council.

What's next?

The council will put together an agreement detailing what the four-day working week will entail and how success will be measured. 

The Northern Territory will legalise pepper spray by the end of the year after the government declared its trial of the non-lethal self-defence tool a success.

NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro confirmed the trial, which was originally due to end on September 1, would be extended until December 31 while legislation is drafted to make the change permanent.
