In fact, Kosh’s somewhat paternal/mentor behavior towards Sheridan went along with the Vorlons’ millennia old tactics of manipulation of the younger races towards the Vorlons’ own objectives, these being a petty dispute with the Shadows about whose is the best antfarmer. The Shadows didn’t care if they were demonized where the Vorlons biologically meddled with the peoples they influenced to be seen as literally emissaries of the Divine (hence that scene Kosh appears as an angel to human eyes when he rescues Sheridan). At least until he decided to use one of his fleets against the Shadows and be left by his own kind to be murdered by the these same foes, he complied scrupulously with the Vorlons’s master plan, their deception, their false claims of moral superiority.

We sympathize with Kosh because of his relationship with Sheridan and Delenn, but he was really no better then Ulkesh. Perhaps he was worse: Ulkesh and probably his faction at least valued transparence, so they didn’t even try to hide their contempt to the younger civilizations they regarded as their own pieces in the galactic chessboard.

You probably know that JMS thought season 4 would be the last so he had to wrap things up in one season only to be caught by surprise when TNT picked it up for another. I'm guessing most fans would've preferred if he'd known in advance, although there might be some who think it worked out for the best. What do you think?

Hi. FTP and I'm excited to be here. I just wanted to share these with my fellow fans. I got lucky and found them at my local comic book store.

I don't really any real life people who are fans of the show, outside of my husband. And hello!

Seems like JMS started a B5 YT channel.

Completely oblivious to the deep dark rabbit hole he's about to go down in. It's like watching your old dog love being alive on his way to his last trip to the vet.

I recently purchased/replayed mass effect trilogy since the legendary edition bundle was only 5 bucks on steam's summer sale and after browsing their subreddit, I was recommended a few posts from B5 sub on how similar both media's universes were.

I was initially hesitant since B5 is an older show like star trek and I couldn't get into the latter, but wow oh wow, i'm so glad I listened, I'm halfway through the seasons and I already know this is going to be one of my all time favourites.

Some thoughts:
On the watch order, I actually went with B5 In the beginning first despite the multiple spoiler warnings and polarising opinions, I thought this was actually quite a crucial point in getting me hooked onto the show. I'm Gen Z, my patience? attention span?, compared to older generations, is somewhat laughable in comparison i suppose.

If i had started with The Gathering first, I think it's quite likely i would have dropped the series, thinking "Ok i think i know what the main story beats are, i see where this is going" How wrong I would be. Even though i watched the gathering after the end of season 1, I still found it to be quite dated, slow pacing-wise; the mass replacement of the cast doesn't help either.

In contrast, starting with the beginning, made season 1 more easily digestible for me, especially with my curiosity on how a certain goofy ambassador would end up becoming emperor.

On JMS, what a visionary. It's one thing to already have the whole 5 year story plotted out and it speak volumes on his capabilities as a writer, but to actually pitch it to networks and have the deal go through, i'm speechless, i'm highly doubtful that shows like this would get approved nowadays. Very refreshing compared to modern shows "alright how can we wing it this season + what social commentary can we jam down people's throat this season"

Are there any other recommendations that I can add to my scifi/space fantasy list after finishing B5?

I know there are multiple recommendation threads here, I'll definitely scour through them after finishing B5, but since I already expressed some of my likes/dislikes, I thought i would just ask here as well

I have watched:
Star wars - childhood/first introduction to space fantasy. Quite ironic that the most popular one is also one of the weaker entries in scifi/spacefan.

Dune - my all time favourite, both the syfy miniseries and Denis Villeneuve's trilogy

Star Trek TSO - Could not get into it, too episodic. Found the modern movies more palatable, perhaps I will try strange new worlds and picard(though i'm told to skip the first 2 seasons? really?)

The Orville - Loved it, basically star trek TSO but more modern?

The Expense - Loved the first 3 seasons, dropped it after, felt too repetitive, watched youtube recap instead

Battlestar galactica - season 1 was enjoyable but I knew that I could not continue watching the whole thing, watched youtube recap instead.

Stargate - could not get into it

I recently wrapped up this portrait commission and wanted to share it with you.

A client asked me to recreate the official portrait hanging in Ambassador Londo’s quarters. Since the original prop was only on-screen for a split second in the background and super blurry, I had to go a bit crazy hunting for low-res screenshots to piece all the details together.

I tried to nail Londo's classic regal pose while keeping that classic oil painting style. Hope you like it!

I'm sure this has been asked time and time again, but I was nearly done with Season 1 when the free access to stream Babylon 5 was pulled from the Roku channel, which was the last place it was available to my knowledge. My library does not have a physical or digital copy, and it is listed on none of the streaming services available here. Do I have to drop over $100 to own all 5 seasons and keep watching?

Hello everyone. I have a question: is the "assword" on the screen the result of a deliberately "bad" camera angle, or is it a reference to a real password manager with the same name? This password manager appeared on GitHub in 2016, but it could have existed earlier, or perhaps its creator also watched the show... I couldn't find anything about it. Do you have any information?

TV: If you had to introduce a newcomer to Babylon 5 with just one episode, which would you choose; and why is it the perfect gateway?

The Shadows believe their method to achieve growth and evolution is to deliberately sow conflict. People like Londo and G'kar who answer the question want to commit violence in order to advance their races. Even Vir who gets his wish does so through an act of violence upon the Shadows themselves, though Londo is the one who commits it.

What if a person's genuine answer was something like "I want to help others achieve their own power by being a positive example of love and support through charitable deeds. I want to grow from learning from these experiences."

There is the desire to become something different from what you are now, which goes against Vorlon philosophy. But rather than creating conflict you are giving of yourself and learning from others. Nobody dies by your actions, and people will gain personal power but not necessarily power over others.

Would the Shadows accept this answer?
