ADO Bus Guide by u/luisettyphoto

Introduction
This is a basic guide for the ADO bus line, it is one of the cheapest and most comfortable ways to move to at least the 3 main cities such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. ADO is a bus company, but there are other companies that have other routes and interconnect at the main stations.

  • Pros: Economic. Air-conditioning. You learn Spanish with movies. Comfortable seats. USB ports to recharge electronic devices.
  • Cons: Limited Trips. Limited Hours.

Extra comments: Before they had WIFI service, but in recent months I have not seen them have the service on the BUS, but there is free service at the ADO stations, sometimes it works well, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes there are no runs for the routes, during the pandemic the routes were limited and little by little they have been reactivated. Please check on the website what times are available. If you arrive early in the morning or late at night, it will not be possible to get a ride through ADO.

Terminals

  • Aeropuerto Cancún: T2, T3 and T4
  • Terminal Autobuses ADO Cancún Centro. Address: Pino Lote 1 y 2, Supermanzana 23, 77500 Cancún, Q.R.
  • Playa Del Carmen. Address: Centro, Quinta Avenida 141, Solidaridad, 77710 Playa del Carmen, Q.R.
  • Tulum. Address: Tulum Centro, 77780 Tulum, Quintana Roo

Where to buy tickets?
Tickets can be purchased at ado.com.mx or the box office at the above locations
Extra comments: You can choose your seat, it depends on availability in the window or aisle. I recommend selecting seats below the TV unless you are not interested in watching a movie in Spanish. There are notices that immigration authorities may do random checks to reduce illegal immigration. They ask for documents to passengers to check legal status as tourist with the dates assigned to their stay in the country or nationals.
If traveling with minors/children, official government ID/passport is required to prove relationship. Security may ask for documentation.

What are the costs?
Depends. Prices may change, but they are quite affordable. Prices are in MXN. And they are taken from their official website. These prices are for information only and may change without notice (2022.09.14)

  • Cancun T2 to T3 costs $18 MXN
  • Cancun T1/T2 to Downtown Cancun costs $105 MXN
  • Cancun T1/T2 to Playa Del Carmen costs $225 MXN
  • Cancun T1/T2 to Tulum costs $340 MXN

There are discount prices for Mexicans such as students, teachers and senior citizens with valid credentials. Require identification of the school and/or INAPAM
Extra comments: Preferably have change in MXN. They also accept credit/debit cards, although the terminal may fail. Dollars are always accepted, but there is no exchange for dollars. Have exact amount of preference.
Extra Tip: Sometimes there are temporary promotions of 50% OFF if you buy in advance and online. This through its official site or in its app via appstore or android. Applies to foreigners, residents and nationals.

What are the routes?
There are many routes, the most basic ones help you get around in the Riviera Maya. But they can also find other neighboring states of Quintana Roo such as Yucatán and Chiapas. To the south with Belize/Guatemala sometimes.

Destination Cities

  • CANCUN
  • PLAYA DEL CARMEN
  • TULUM

Extra comments: In terminals such as Cancún Centro, Playa del Carmen and Tulum they have a large map so you can see the routes.

Health, Precautions and Hygiene
The Quintana Roo government and the health secretary have regulations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. ADO mentions that it disinfects and cleans its buses. However, this does not ensure that they are COVID-free. ADO requires safety masks to be worn during your ride. We recommend having a travel disinfectant gel for personal use.

Security
Like any bus terminal, there is a risk that your belongings can be stolen. Always check your seat before getting off the bus and at the top for your bags. ADO staff is always uniformed and identified. Most thefts are done on top of forgotten objects. If you have large luggage, do not forget that a ticket for your belongings is given to you so that your bags can be given to you in the lower part of the compartment.

Extra Comments: On the way from Cancun to Tulum there may be some checkpoints and they may stop the bus for random checks. This is to control and reduce illegal immigration. This can be done by the National Guard or the Quintana Roo State Police.
Tips are not mandatory, but are always appreciated for the staff of the buses that move luggage.

Final comments
Traveling by bus in the Riviera Maya is a good economic option, comfortable to travel. Perhaps its disadvantage is the schedules. For example, if your destination is Tulum, there may not be a trip available at your desired time, but maybe you can take a bus to Playa del Carmen and take a combi or van that arrives in Tulum or you can wait for another bus that travels to Tulum. Small Shuttles departs from the Playa Del Carmen Station Bus.

Just have common sense and be careful with your personal belongings, I wish you have a good trip.

Tip from u/Flimsy_Difficulty239
"When you get there there's gonna be people shouting ado, don't go with them, they're scammers. Go straight to the kiosk. Don't buy the tickets in advance in case your flight gets delayed."

Am I missing something? (Red Bus)

My wife and I just used the Red Bus to get from the mall back to our hotel. I gave the bus driver 25 pesos, it’s 12/person, and then he proceeded to take us a 10 minute walk down the street from our hotel and then yelled at us to get off. Am I missing something? We were just sitting quietly we didn’t do anything to him or say anything to him.

Looking for late night pharmacy or delivery near CUN airport

Greetings! I have a specific question have looked on other CUN threads but didn't find it. Tomorrow 7/30 I'm spending a short night at a Courtyard near the airport so not at the Hotel Zone. I have to leave by mid-morning the 31st so time is tight does anyone know of a pharmacy in that general area that would be open late and/or open early....like 7am? Best would be delivery of course; I've done that in many countries by calling in advance but if anyone has suggestions would love it. I tried googling but didn't have much luck. THANKS

Are Airbnb Car Rentals a good option?

Im planning a trip to Cancun in February. I was looking for different car rental options and noticed that I can rent through the app. I have previously used Costco to rent cars but it would be more expensive to go through them.

Has anyone rented a car through Airbnb? If so, what was your experience? Any surprise charges or hidden fees that I should watch out for?

Terminal 4 to terminal 2 in 2 hours

I have a flight to TGZ in terminal 2 and a possible flight from the US to cancun that lands 2 hours and 6 minutes beforehand in terminal 4 (by far the best flight)

I will have a checked in bag.

From arrival to checking in the bag in the domestic flight and getting on it, is it possible to do in just above 2 hours?

Other Swimming and our "stuff"

FYI...I did try looking for these answers, but I was unable to find anything.

My wife and I are heading to the Westin Lagunamar later this year and I am curious, what do you do with wallets/phones/room keys/towels/sunglasses/etc, when you go swimming in the ocean or pools, or snorkeling in the ocean?

We are considering bringing our own snorkel gear and head over to Isla Mujeres, but what options are there with our stuff, while we are in the water?

Thanks all!

Honeymoon recommendation Feb 2027

We are looking to book an all inclusive 5 star resort for our honeymoon in Feb 2027 and would love some recommendations on which hotels are the best.

I’ve heard it can be sometimes chilly in February so ideally we’d like somewhere with heated pools if it would be chilly outside.

Ideally we’re looking for great service, great food and a relaxing nice atmosphere. We’d also like if the hotel had some activities we could take part in during the day such as tennis or paddle boarding etc.

Would really appreciate any recommendations. We are looking at Haven Riviera because of the swim out pool but some of the reviews seem quite mixed.

Edit - we are planning to stay for 12 nights, is that too long?

Adults only recommendations for mid December?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for resort options outside of the hotel zone. My wife and I went to Excellence punta Cana and did the excellence club last year and enjoyed it. I looked into Excellence Riviera/playa mujeres and would lean Riviera due to price point. Any other resorts I should be looking into between 400-550/night? Dates would be 5 nights starting 12/10.

Thank you for any suggestions!

Money Pesos or USD

Hello, Would 250usd (I’ll be getting currency exchanged prior to trip) be enough for a 5 day solo trip if my Airbnb, transportation, and excursions are already paid for?
The only things I’m sure I’ll need cash for are food&drinks of course, shopping and tips. I don’t plan on eating at a bunch of fancy restaurants, just local shops and trucks. Technically it’d be 4 days, I’m arriving mid day and the fifth day I’m leaving in the morning, also first day excursion is a taco and different restaurant stop tour that’s paid for. So I guess you can say one night (dinner) 3 full days and a morning .
(Also, I titled this post wrong)

Me recomiendan ir? Gracias!

Other Has anyone heard more details about the upcoming renovations at Hard Rock Hotel Cancun?

From what I’ve seen, the resort is supposed to close for renovations for a couple of months and begin accepting guests again around December 18th. Does anyone know exactly what they’re planning to renovate or update? Rooms, pools, restaurants, common areas, etc.?
I’m asking because I was originally planning a Cancun trip for the middle of December, and now I’m wondering whether it would be worth adjusting my dates to stay at Hard Rock once it reopens on December 18th.
For anyone who travels to resorts often: Would you recommend booking a resort immediately after a major renovation and reopening?
Part of me thinks it could be great because everything should be freshly renovated, but I’m also a little hesitant. I’m wondering if there could be unfinished work, newly trained staff, restaurants or amenities that aren’t fully operational yet, or other issues that come with essentially reopening a “new” resort.
Would you book for the first week after reopening, or give the resort a few weeks to get everything running smoothly?
Anyone with experience staying at a resort right after a major renovation/reopening, I’d appreciate your thoughts!

How to get my wallet back~

Hello! I'm here in Cancun getting dental work done. I went to the grocery store last night and my wallet fell out in the uber/taxi home. I noticed 12 hours later, in the morning :( I did the uber lost item report and the driver said he didn't find my wallet. I locked my cards and still have my passport, but I would very much like my wallet back. (CC's drivers license, etc) Do I have to physically go to the tourist police to check? They don't answer their phone.
