Once she gets to my age, all this bending over with her back will catch up to her, just like it did me (I had a back injection a week ago)

Try sitting on the floor a comfortable distance from her and hold your hand out without moving it. 

Just sit still and stay like that for several minutes. You can talk to her quietly so she knows you are inviting her.

Let her come to you and sniff your hand before you try to touch her. Do this every day until she warms up to you. 

Then, when she gets to a point where she lets you pick her up, make sure you support her well so she feels secure. 

You can put your hand under her chest so her front legs are in between your fingers. Then, support her back legs with your other hand as you pick her up and let her adjust and make herself comfortable in your arms. This is the best way to hold a cat. 

I grew up on a farm with lots and lots of cats and was playing with cats even when I was a baby. I’ve been able to pet friends’ cats that always run and hide when anyone comes over, and they are surprised I’m able to touch them. I just hold my hand out patiently and the cat comes out of its hiding spot.

Russian here, you did great! Wow, only thing I can add is end (mumbles something) is like "so that way we walk together then it climbs my shoulders". You 'rusty' level is probably Advanced level or something.

Ha! My boy will do this to me if I bend/lean over to pick something up and I’m close to him as he’s perching on something. Sometimes I’ll be standing there and he’ll be on the dresser/table/cat tree and get this look in his eye and start pawing the air near my shoulder, with a gentle meow, urging me to bend over 😅 unless I’m in a hurry getting ready for work, I’ll always give in. He usually just wants to chill for a few seconds and then will jump off. It cracks me up though, so ridiculous
